I mean if their comp has some gnarly rear end illegal poo poo it's probably actually good that someone finds it so those fuckers get locked up

just, y'know, hope it's someone else who finds it so you don't have to see it yourself

A million years ago when I was doing computer support I was installing software on computers at a clients. (Windows 98 machines for context).

A guy had left a video on his desktop so I opened it while waiting at it was teenage boys loving. I freaked out and called the ceo of the client who called the cops. I then had the not envious job of scanning the proxy logs and found he spent a good 5 hours a day searching for child porn.

I then had to show the video to detectives and attorneys over and over while they debated whether the people were underage (they were).

I’m really happy that I’m 20 years that has never happened again, and I don’t envy forensic computer dudes one bit.

You get used to it pretty quickly. Well, so long as you have the right sort of personality. I'm not sure if that's the word I'm looking for, but that kind of job isn't for everyone. I imagine the same sort of thing goes for people like crime scene photographers etc.

I think you're mistaken. The guy did exactly what he was planning to (a couple little tiny 2mm pushes; if you count he actually does 5, which is likely what he "planned"). He's clearly an idiot that didn't consider how precarious the stack of weights were (look at him pushing on them as he sits down and grabbing the handle when he gets up. I doubt he'd have done that if he was concerned about the stack).

Grabbing the handle is how you get out of that seat.

hoo boy, I had a live-in guest at the first hotel I worked at that received a package. He opened it, found an unlabelled CD, said "I wonder what it is...can you put it in the computer back there and find out?"...a moment later I had to come back and tell him, truthfully, that it was a file named <CleverGrannyPornNameICan'tRemember>.mpg and no I wasn't going to go any further with it.

It was fun to watch him stammer red-faced about how he didn't order that, how did it come to his address, it was a mistake, no wait, it was a prank, etc etc while I'm like "dude, this isn't even the third weirdest thing to happen this week, now take your granny porn and go"

Yeah, I spent years doing auto accident liability investigations for a few insurers and we would get the full AID police report on fatal accidents, including scene photos...which, fortunately, were usually in black & white.

Last Wednesday, I investigated a frozen pipe rupture, which occurred in the morgue of a large funeral home.

I had to contact the FBI last year while doing a computer repair. I never went looking through people's files but in order for me to get to the hdd I open file explorer and the first screen in explorer is the most recent files opened and well you guessed it. Whole page full of super young girls.

I wasn't just gonna leave that poo poo, do my job and let that poo poo go.

Never thought I'd have an FBI agent and NYPD detective on separate occasions ask me if I was 100 percent sure it was little girls.

Modern file systems keep track of file creation, modification, and last-accessed times, so it's trivial to counter that argument.

The kind of people who know how to change those settings and the kind of people who leave folders of child porn open on their desktop during repairs are different kinds of people.

Actually, if you are working on someone's computer and find illegal porn and the person is later found out, and it's demonstrated that you saw it but didn't tell anyone, you can be charged as an accessory to the crime. :eng101:

There are specific laws mandating reporting in some jurisdictions. Here is California’s, Penal Code 11166.

quote:

(2) A commercial computer technician who has knowledge of or observes, within the scope of his or her professional capacity or employment, any representation of information, data, or an image, including, but not limited to, any computer hardware, computer software, computer file, computer floppy disk, data storage medium, CD-ROM, computer-generated equipment, or computer-generated image that is retrievable in perceivable form and that is intentionally saved, transmitted, or organized on an electronic medium, depicting a child under 16 years of age engaged in an act of sexual conduct, shall immediately, or as soon as practicably possible, telephonically report the instance of suspected abuse to the law enforcement agency located in the county in which the images or materials are seen. As soon as practicably possible after receiving the information concerning the incident, the reporter shall prepare and send, fax, or electronically transmit a written followup report of the incident with a brief description of the images or materials.

Huh. I was aware of mandated reporting in the context of people who directly interact with kids, teachers and such. Didn't realize it extended to computer techs, too.

It's a separate misdemeanor, not actually accessory to the possession of child pornography, but still. How about that.

I’m no lawyer, but I think a technician would escape an accessory conviction if they dropped everything and handed the computer back the moment they found the incriminating material. They would still be looking at the failure to report in jurisdictions where that is a crime.

A person could open themselves to accessory charges by moving, destroying, or hiding the files, or even by repairing the computer.

Well ~actually~ I believe you do build more muscle by doing fewer reps of a heavier load than more reps of an easy weight. Something about having to overload your muscles to cause growth.

That said I doubt it works very well when you press your knees into position with your hands and only do 5cm of movement because it's too heavy to fully extend and contract your legs more than once
