Why did they write a time jump then? They must have a completely different ending for the TV show in mind. They are not even up to end of the second book yet. This one has got to end with the opening of the gates. If the plan is for 5 seasons where do they go from there?

I'm going to spoiler the speculation, don't read it if you don't want to know the plot of future books.

Are they going to have earth bombed and the martians through the gates in the first episode, spend half the season killing Marco and saving earth with the martians coming back in their new ships in the latter half? Or something entirely different?

At what point can they end the show satisfactorily?

End of Book 3?

In this post-GRRM world the authors have done a pretty good job of creating several ending points in the series already by making the books into pairs or trilogies instead of one long arc. Depending on their viewership/funding and stuff I can see them ending pretty easily after either (book 4) the Ilus excursion with some epilogue exposition on the promise of all these new worlds or whatever or (book 6) Marco's defeat while leaving out the Laconia stuff. If suddenly it explodes into ridiculous GoT-level popularity there's still the final trilogy (7/8/9) to stretch out their seasons with.

Yeah I was super glad when they condensed 100+ pages of Eros "vomit zombie survival adventure" content mostly into a single episode.

That was probably the biggest change between books and show that I noticed.

I kinda felt bad cause I hyped my wife on a big tonal shift out of nowhere in the series to help keep her interest, as she found Expanse pretty slow at first. She gets kinda bored by slow space operas, and she likes monster/horror/zombie stuff*, so I thought Eros would be the turning point where she decides "yeah this is my poo poo". Then the flight from Eros is like 20 minutes long, with only the merest hint of protomolecule zombies, and with radiation poisoning set up as the far greater (albeit less harrowing) danger. She thought it was a good episode, best of the season, but didn't live up to the hype. Oops.

(*she also loved BSG and didn't like Walking Dead past S1, so who the gently caress knows right. She's stuck with the show through S2, likes it more as it's gone on, and promises to read the books at some point.)

I could take or leave the body horror, but I am glad I didn't have to hear the phrase "vomit zombies," which had overstayed its welcome the instant it was introduced in the book.

Yeah the books were written when zombies were popular and a whole first person shooter survival zombie scene seemed fresh and trendy, but now it's tired and dated.

Also, and I admit this is nitpicky, it bugs me when an idiosyncratic term is used in the narration, and every character immediately starts using that term without discussion. It feels like, "oh, I guess they read the script."

https://www.barnesandnoble.com/blog/sci-fi-fantasy/the-evolution-of-james-s-a-coreys-space-epic-the-expanse/

quote:

Franck hadn’t forgotten his world, however. It was well suited for gaming, and while it wouldn’t become an MMO, he started to run it as a roleplaying game on a post-to-play gaming forum. He opened up a private forum with threads for each round, for each character, their actions and out-of-character commentary. It was here, online, that a story began to emerge. What had been distant elements of a world were now together in a vibrant setting, alongside a grand story of human societies in competition with one another. Now, all it needed were some characters.

The game heavily influenced what would one day become the book: a crew of a water hauler is caught in the midst of an interplanetary war when they stumble upon an alien protomolecule on the asteroid Eros. Many distinct elements of the game made their way into the novel: characters, locations, ships, and events (Franck killed off one of his gamers when the player had to leave the game early; his out was a spectacular death). They key components of the larger story began to fall into place through various runs of the game, fleshing out the setting and testing out the logic of the world. Core elements of a narrative began to coalesce. Gamers developed the narrative’s central characters: Holden, Naomi, Amos, Alex and Shed, who navigated the solar system and the delicate balance of power around them, aboard the corvette battleship Rocinante.

“A lot of the characters in Leviathan Wakes are from the game, most notably the crew of the Roci. There were as many as eight crew members at some points in the game… [They] were condensed down for the books, but the core four crew members are recognizable from the game,” wrote Raja Doake, who I met on the set of The Expanse in Toronto. He’s named along with Tom, Sake Mike, Non-Sake Mike, Porter, Scott, Jeff, Mark, Dan and Joe in the novel’s acknowledgements—the original inhabitants of The Expanse.

The game that played out on the forum eventually fizzled out. Liza Williams, who observed it at the time, noted that, “it was a bit like starting to read a book and getting invested in the characters, and then having it end just once things had gotten interesting.”

As much as I want to see all the space battles and political maneuvering in the following books, I'd be really bummed if they cut out the ending of proto-Miller's story and the massively creepy non-euclidian underground factories and half a planet blowing up.

A lot of books 5 and 6 could be inserted before a lot of PM stuff if they jigger around with stuff.

And it'd be hard to blame them. Books 5 and 6 have a pacing better suited for TV than 3/4. I could see them using 5/6 as the overarching plot while certain events from 3/4 happen as a sideshow to advance PM tech.

If I recall the plot of 3 correctly it's not a huge loss if they just merge in the important bits elsewhere and skip the main conflict there. It was all interesting stuff, just a bit slow for TV.

I'm just hoping they spend a good amount of time on the payoff for the stolen stealth stuff that was discussed in like episode 1.

Wasn't book 3 mostly about the ring and the Slow Zone? Book 4 was the slug planet story with proto-Miller, and I feel like they would have a really hard time cutting that out. The railgun is definitely on the ship by book 4.

They are filming Season Three and Four back to back and it's meant longer filming time between them.

My guess is Season Four ends at the end of book Four with a slightly tweaked explanation for one of the shows central mysteries and a more optimisistic outlook for the future. That will serve as a good end point for the series if they don't make anymore.

Yeah, I'm guessing we will start seeing promos in the next 3 weeks or so, gearing up for a march/april launch after the current crop of shows end their seasons.
