Amon is sort of near the ending, but it doesn't actually reach the ending stuff so it just ends up being a toothless vertical slice of the story that lacks in pathos and feels like a pointless combat scene. I don't completely hate it, but it's the least enthused I've been from the 3 adaptations I've seen so far (the other two being the OVAs and Crybaby, of course)

I would say that very much depends on the series. Going along with the yandere example, Kaede from Shuffle is kind of confusing unless you know Japanese nerds get a boner for crazy girls, because she's kind of just a random horror villain that got shoehorned into a harem comedy series. Yuno from Mirai Nikki, on the other hand, is one of the two protags of the series, so a *lot* of time gets spent on her mental state and the reasons for it, and I could see someone watching the show who's totally unfamiliar with the trope still being able to comprehend her deal just fine. Same with tsunderes: Asuka from Evangelion is generally considered a tsundere, but she's a lot less immediately "what the gently caress"-inducing than your average Rie Kugimiya character.

I think your average viewer can see a yandere show and won't need a history on the trope in the medium to understand 'this woman is crazy.' Now if somethings making repeated jokes using the term and they don't understand what it means they might have to google it but that's sort of a given when you watch stuff in a language/from a culture you're unfamiliar with. Its hardly unique to watching anime.

People were saying anime is this uniquely byzantine self referential medium when that's not really the case with a few notable exceptions. (similar to like, family guy and south park existing in american popculture) I think the tropes work without explanation being necessary most of the time. My point is exactly that htis is common to foreign media in general lol. Whether or not I think yandere ref jokes are funny I think it's dumb to say a joke isn't funny because it requires a certain cultural context a viewer might lack.

Nobody said all of anime is byzantine, just that there's a clear difference between international anime and "otaku" anime, with the latter being more insular and requiring special knowledge to fully appreciate. Maybe the people denying that there is such a thing as otaku anime - are the otaku.
