I'd always thought that Ulver's work after their first 3 albums was meant to be awful but I just randomly heard Perdition City and then their latest album and I really like it. I can understand why people might only like the early albums if they aren't into the genres Ulver moved into, but it's very good stuff on first listen. Now I need to go through the rest of their albums.

Ulver is one of my favorite bands, and my favorite records aren't the early stuff at all. "Blood Inside" and "A Quick Fix Of Melancholy" are on constant rotation.

The Assassination of Julius Caesar was one of the best albums of last year. It took the band in this sort of synthpoppy Depeche Mode direction, and just about every second of the album was awesome. The album's early standout track, "Rolling Stone", sort of channels Alabama 3's "Woke Up this Morning" (best known as the theme to The Sopranos), which is hilarious if it was done on purpose (some people here will remember the episode where the prop department thought it would be funny to hang a Nattens Madrigal poster in Meadow's room).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaCBkv_2Ht4

Speaking of stuff channeling Depeche Mode, I was just reminded of the bonus track "The Absolute" off of Dark Tranquillity's latest, Atoma, and I kind of want them to do a whole album like this:

Blood:

While not exactly the same Gorgasm is one of my old favorites. I'm just gonna link the video for this one because of the album art.

The closest bands I've found that sound similar to Devourment's Molesting the Decapitated disc are Haemophagia and Sick.

Try this one from Sick: https://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Sick/Cannibalistic_Torment/362122

or this one from Haemophagia: https://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Haemophagia/From_Sickness_to_Cult/170528

Maybe Devour the Unborn or early Kraanium as well. Molesting the Decapitated has a pretty unique sound that hasn't really been fully replicated, even by Devourment themselves, despite it being a defining brutal death record. There's a new Devourment coming this year with Ruben back on vocals, so maybe it will be a return to that sound. I still loved Conceived in Sewage though. Big fan of brutal death / slam stuff, it's probably 90% of what I listen to, so if anyone needs suggestions, feel free to ask. Burping toilet vocals, snare drums that sound like an empty Pringles can, and caveman slams for the win!

I just listened to most of it on my way to work. My initial impression after a single listen: it's loving great. It's "cleaner" than previous albums, in the sense that the individual parts that comprise their signature wall of noise are more discernible. I get a better idea of what's going on musically. The ironic side effect of this is that the music sounds even more evil and chaotic. The technicality is less obscured and the pure weirdness of it shines through. I really like the direction in which this band is evolving.

Now time to check out the new Hooded Menace.

Oh man it totally does rip. I can't say I don't miss the old vocalist. The new guy sounds good, but there was just something really special about the other dude. Regardless, the album is great.

So how do the big streamers compare these days?

I currently use Google Play and it’s decent. But do things like Spotify, Apple or etc. have more “deeper” cuts? Or is it all sorta the same.

I use the “start radio” feature a lot and I remember with Apple it would jump to like Slayer or some more known act even based off some older thrash.

Spotify has way more independent and unsigned artists, and definitely has the best discovery features out of the bunch. Their audio codec is Vorbis, which suffers a little bit in the high end compared to the AAC that Apple uses.

When I was in middle school I was hooked on reading sci-fi and cyberpunk novels. At the same time I was getting into hard rock and metal. I remember this scene from a book I was reading at the time had a Mike Hammer style private eye going into this nightclub and described the music as jetcore.

Basically the character described the music as the sounds made by angry orcs standing in the middle of a jet engine at full power.

As the years have passed the title of the novel and the plot have faded but I have never forgotten the music I imagined the character heard it that club. I searched for years for something that matched what played in my head. I've finally found it in Portal.
