I don't know what the law in Denmark was and don't want to google it at work, either, but I do know that among certain advocates of sexual liberation, sexual acts with children were not believed to be harmful *as long as the child was apparently willing*. It's possible that existing child abuse laws would have covered cases in which children were violently raped or otherwise physically hurt, but not cases in which they appeared to be a willing participant. Also, in the many years I've spent on the internet, I've seen - by accident! - a handful of images of such "willing" children, and I hate all of these people and want to vomit just thinking about the things they did to kids in the name of sexual liberation.

On an irrelevant note this reminds of that issue of the Punisher where he executes a defenceless husband and wife in their own home, for the crime of producing pornography with their children. Gruesome and unpleasant, but he's still more moral than Batman.

I mean, it's not the best written but at least the author has decent intentions which more then what I expect from a novel based on a comic book.

When I read your post, having never heard of the book, my first thought was "Andrew Vachss wrote a comic book novel?" Yep, Vachss it is. Andrew Vachss is a really solid human being.

I have a large number of his Burke novels (and also that Batman novel). They can be tough reads at times based due to some of the situations. The early ones can be particularly brutal. He is a fascinating person. As a lawyer his practice is exclusively representing children. He is also a law guardian in NY state, which is a lawyer assigned to children in abuse and neglect cases to specifically look out for the rights of the child. I highly recommend people reading his fiction and non-fiction. IIRC, he also got a little testy with Oprah as guest when she said she forgave her uncle that abused her as a child. He said that when it comes to child abuse, he doesn't believe in rehabilitation or forgiveness, he believes in vengeance. Some choice quotes: quote:Some of those children not only lived through it, not only refused to imitate the oppressor (evil is a decision, not a destiny), but actually maintained sufficient empathy to care about the protection of other children once they themselves became adults and were "out of danger." quote:If you look at Burke closely, you'll see the prototypical abused child: hypervigilant, distrustful. He's so committed to his family of choice—not his DNA-biological family, which tortured him, or the state which raised him, but the family that he chose—that homicide is a natural consequence of injuring any of that family. He's not a hit man. But he shares the same religion I do, which is revenge. If I were a kid, I'd definitely want him in my corner.

I can see now part of why DC imposed only the restrictions that Batman couldn’t kill or have sex in his novel. I’m sure part of it is brand protection, but now I’m wondering how this dude would write Batman if he could have him shove knitting needles in people’s ears or whatever.

The last documented slave ship, the Clotilda has likely been found. The Atlantic slave trade was banned in 1808. Of course, it didn't end it. The Clotilda went to Africa in 1860 and returned to Alabama with 100+ human beings. The reason for the human trafficking? It's arguably even worse than even normal slavery. They went to Africa on a bet, just to see if they could get away with it.

An update on Jahi McMath, the young girl who has been kept “alive” on a ventilator for the last four years. What Does It Mean To Die?
|
# ? Jan 30, 2018 01:10 |
|
I've read in other accounts that the family had unfortunately given Jahi something to eat (I think it was popsicles) after the surgery and it caused the wound to open something fierce. In the initial accounts there's a lot of varying accounts (understandably) but one version of the story has Jahi's grandma panicking after Jahi started bleeding and apparently she grabbed the suction but it really hosed up the wound even more. I'm going to try and find some links.
