That still looks terrible to me and missing out on a lot of what made PR1 great. The entire aesthetics of those night / raining / fights on water are gone and the jaeger now appear to move way too fast and slick and lack the weight and momentum the original had. You can write it all off with even better and faster tech running the jaegers now but it just comes out sterile and boring. Kaiju jaegers look cool, though.

"[Person] retreats into fantasy world to escape RL trauma, everyone learns a lesson about life" has been done a million times but so has "[Person] is the only one who realises there's a horror/alien threat, can't get anyone to believe them so has to save the town/world/human race on their own" There's also the twofer version where the crazy obnoxious prepper is the only one who is in a position to properly deal with a sudden dire threat, we saw that in Tremors and the animated Trolls movie. I guess even Ghostbusters treads close to this: "Holy this those crazy fuckers Stantz and Spengler were actually right about all this ghost poo poo!" There's obviously lovely trite ways of rehashing either one of those but there's still a whole lot of room to do a really good version of them. 90 second featurette on "the shimmer" in Annihilation. Typical EPK stuff, but includes some nice new footage. A lot of stuff literally from the book. I keep saying they're combining all three, but I also keep hearing reports that it was adapted before 2 and 3 came out. That can't be right though? in this featurette you hear them talk about how this overgrown area is the OG Southern Reach headquarters before the Shimmer swallowed it. That doesn't happen until Book 2.
