To be fair SOTN'S second half was just a huge copy-paste.

8 way whip is heresy

I hate the over reliance of subweapons. It's like Mega Man's weapon upgrades before Capcom realized they could design challenges around the subweapons.

I'll give Rondo credit for making your old subweapon drop because the biggest "gently caress you" of previous Castlevanias was losing your holy water or cross to loving knife.

Mega Man games with subweapons that are useless poo poo except for one or two boss weaknesses and one puzzle suck. The ones that are also no different from just the buster are also lame. They don't all need to be metal blade, but having some reason to use them as part of normal gameplay is good.

And so Castlevania 4 is kind of boring in the enemy design but focusing almost exclusively on the whip let's them do levels that are more dynamic and fun than any other sidescrolling Castlevania.

At least until whatever DS game lets you fling yourself around like a slingshot.

It would be cool if you could combine subweapons, why has Capcom not thought of that in 30 years

i'm trying to remember if there was a castlevania that let you swap freely between all the subweapons you'd collected up to that point but i think i'm just conflating simons' quest and julius mode

It's strange, it feels like Castlevania didn't know what it wanted to be the entire 16-bit generation while Konami's other aging series Contra and later ex-Konami staffers designing Gunstar Heroes would innovate on the run n' gun.

Shame about Contra like 5 years later though.

Super Castlevania IV could have been a lot better if it was better balanced. For a Super Nintendo game it was surprising to have a game unbalanced in favor of the player and not the enemies, but I felt like the game was too easy because of the whip. It trivialized a lot of content and made using other items and weapons pointless.

I think I have successfully resisted the urge to buy Dragon Ball by remembering that I am juggling six different games in progress, including two other fighting games, and have also forgotten about Mario with hundreds of moons to go

I might get They Are Billions for the weekend, tho

Nah, the catacombs are just filled with a ton of instant death traps. It and the climb after the collapsing bridge in stage... 11? are probably the hardest bits of the game.

This is probably 75% of the reason it's my favourite, who gives a poo poo about it being too easy or the whip not being correct when you can listen to that soundtrack while playing it

cv4 is... okay? it has good music and... i didn't really like anything else about it all that much, vs rondo just being like the perfect castlevania game that fixes all of my issues with old-school castlevania

castlevania 1 is ok but i hate a lot of the late-game level design and cv3 is good but i still don't really enjoy how brutal it gets, and bloodlines is loving miserable
