Did we learn much of anything from this episode that wasn’t in the others? There’s the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it revelation that the last batch of pilots from Plantation 13 got party wiped I guess. D'' final boss.

From the episodes I've seen, I'm not sure if its fair to call this series meandering or slow in getting to a point or flow it wants to. Its only three episodes so far, but it feels both like it doesn't have true direction yet, but it also doesn't need to set off quite yet because what the gently caress is even going on in this messed up sex as warfare and survival setting? Its interesting schlock at the moment.

Mysteries only exist to be ruined, and personally I feel like Darling is hanging on to the mystery of why Hiro can pilot too long as is. It's not even a particularly exciting mystery, because we haven't been given any reason to care about Hiro beyond that he can pilot. So having why he can pilot be a mystery when the only investment going in is that he can pilot just seems like bad setup to me.

I actually like that they're holding back on what happened with Hiro because it works really well as a way of selling Hiro's frustrations. Because he doesn't know what happened in the cockpit, he's become insecure that maybe he didn't actually accomplish anything, and that 02 just did everything for him. This sentiment is exacerbated by Zorome. To fix his insecurity, he wanted to prove that he's not impotent by piloting with Ichigo. But, he failed because of that very desire, since it made him incompatible with Ichigo's ignored romantic feelings. He continues to think that somehow his impotence is his fault, and he hates himself for it. Hence all the angst this episode. However, seeing another guy be in his position but get destroyed by it has (hopefully) blown away his insecurity about piloting with 02. Or in other words, maybe he's not an impotent waste of meat, for what other purpose would be left in his life? I think it's also important to note that Mitsuru seems to feel the same way. He wanted to pilot with 02 to prove that he wasn't the problem on his team. If he can pilot with someone else, then surely his partner must be the problem. It may be that Hiro blaming himself while Mitsuru blames others was the whole point of this exercise.

I don't think humanity is wiped out per say but poo poo did go down. Also those people at the ceremony were not programs they were people uh... whatever you would call hologramming into an area to have a chat. More importantly there are other cities which persumably have people in them and based off what can be seen vis a vis guards and staff there are probably at a minimum enough people total to sustain humanity. The hosed up poo poo is gonna be something else. still nasty, probably with the power supply they use literally killing the planet like so many other animes/games/ff7

Isn't part of the base premise of the series? I recall reading somewhat that they discovered magma energy, they tapped the gently caress out of that, dug too deep too much and ended up loving up the earth's crust therefore leaving everything like a deserted wasteland which led to the current society of mobile arcologies.
