Evaluating the two big cinematic universes through how much people like the trailers is some genius-level stealth satire on the nature of those franchises.

Started shooting in the middle of October. With it being Venom, I expect there's a poo poo-ton of effects work that he doesn't need to be on-set for.

Don't you tell me my business again.
I have no idea how they're gonna pull off a decent Venom movie. At all. Especially without Spiderman. The whole character is based on a mirror image of Spidey and is not that interesting to begin with aside from "look really cool" and began as a marketing gimmick to sell Secret Wars toys and a new spiderman outfit.

Shazam on the other hand intrigues me a lot because there's so many different ways to tackle it and I'm curious what tone they'll take with it. Might be really cool to have a totally G-Rated comic book movie for a change. Sort of a reverse Deadpool approach. Honestly, I hope they do that. Seems to suit the character and might be refreshing fun for a change.

When was the last time that actually happened? Even Incredibles and Superman were rated PG. Maybe the Lego ones?

sponges posted:

They rebooted Shazam a few years back and tried to make it edgier and more 'grounded'. Billy Batson was a homeless kid living in an abandoned subway station, Dr Sivana sends a paramilitary team to assassinate him before he can transform, Billy's best friend gets shot in the crossfire and dies so Shazam goes and grabs Sivana by the neck and has an existential crisis while he tries to figure out whether it's better to just snap his spine or let him continue living, etc..

Also Superman goes and confronts the Wizard who gave Billy these powers and chews him out for giving godly powers to an unsupervised pre-adolescent which is a pretty fair point. :v:

Edit: here's another reboot that's more 'grounded' again. In this one the kid Billy Batson is am angry teen hoodlum and when he gets his Shazam powers he uses them to get revenge on people he doesn't like (smashing their car) and steal money from an ATM. If he ever defeats bad guys it's only because he accidentally bumps into them while they're robbing a bank or something.

Tawky Tawny (the talking tiger from the old old Shazam comics) is a giant killing machine in this version:

It's a really obvious attempt to distance the character from the fun, innocent cartoony comic it used to be.

A well-done Shazam can be a family character. He's absolutely wish fulfillment for children but like a lot of that material can carry over to adults too. Jeff Smith (the person behind Bone) did a Captain Marvel story which is a pretty solid example of how to do all-ages Marvel.

I didn’t think of that. Maybe we’d get a reverse shot of that scene so they wouldn’t need Cavil to suit up?

The dumb thing about making Shazam "grounded and edgier" is that you can still do that but with Captain Marvel Jr.

Jr's solo stories were the grounded ones about being a crippled street orphan. Though I can't say first hand how they were.

I'm taking a graphic novel course this semester and one of our assignments is making the occasional blog post about something related to comics. I was reading through one of them and it's really difficult to believe that a college student wrote this. Here's an excerpt.

an actual college student posted:

Batman vs Superman, while being a great name for a movie was a total bust due to the lack of excitement in the plot and lack follow up with the previous things we know about Batman. In this movie Batman is upset with Superman because he took out one his buildings. This then turns into a rather unlikely portrayal of Batman. But anyways back to the lack of comic book foundation. In this movie the idea of Lex luthor building a killing monster is not found anywhere in comics. Also we see that Lex Luthor is just a malfunctioning android. The abrupt appearance of miss Diana Prince, AKA wonder woman, almost saves the movie itself. The plot was predictable up until Superman`s death.

I mean it makes sense. A lot of people really do think movie characters are basically robots who ought to be making perfect decisions at all times and get legitimately upset when they don't.
