I've now beaten Saints Row The Third and while early on the story was silly, but not quite enough to justify itself by around the halfway point when the military get involved it becomes actually quite funny, especially the end of "Air Steelport". I opted to do the more constructive choices, keeping the Belgian's building intact and saving Shaundi and Pierce while letting Killbane go. I liked that ending. Although I didn't mind Angry!Shaundi because she had some funny moments like "I can't take it anymore! He's proposed to me 6 times!", I feel they would have done better making her a totally different character. Call her something like Desdemona or something similarly melodramatic and say that Shaundi is using her share of the fortune pursuing a degree in Chemistry at Stillwater U to explain her absence - then in 4 when the boss is president, she can be the Surgeon General or something.

Part of me thinks it would be cool if they made the next Saints Row game continue on from the bad ending of 3. Just keep doing weird continuity offshoots instead of trying to bother resolving GOoH's ending.

4 has some amazing song uses as well, though at a few points it feels like they're overdoing the gag. It's still amazing when you hit that final mission again though...

I thought it was just lousy writing, harping on the same gimmick all the time. then I played a different character whose famous for being clever and logical and his sections play exactly like that. He always knows what to say and is never caught off guard. Turns out it's not lousy writing, it's just that Phoenix is that dumb All of the sequels are less good than the original trilogy for precisely this reason imo

IIRC there was one case (maybe more than one, I forget) where you got to examine the same environments and evidence as two different characters, and the contrast between how they saw everything was pretty fun.

Also I like to think that Edgeworth has twice as much 'health' in AAI because people actually respect Edgeworth, and are more willing to put up with him throwing unrelated evidence around

Nuclear War posted:I think I'm probably a bit past the halfway point in HZD and honestly it's still great. My only gripe is that bosses and bigger set piece combats are super hard, loving glinthawks. I'm not really a Git Gud kinda pro gamer So I've run it in story mode instead of normal for a couple of those moments and then turned it back after. It's a single player game, the word cheating doesn't really apply. My favorite little thing in HZD was when I used a tripwire to blow up a machine, and one of its plates was spinning on end on the ground for a second or two afterwards before falling.

Everything about Crypt of the NecroDancer is amazing, but the sheer insanity you can try for with some of the unlockable characters blows me away. For those unaware: CotN is a rhythm roguelike, where you have to get through the randomized dungeons and fight the bosses while keeping time to the incredibly sick beats playing in each stage. The base character, Cadence, is completely normal - you move one step for each beat, and start with a basic dagger and shovel. It can take quite a while to get good enough to beat the game, it's quite challenging. But then you start getting some of the unlockable characters and modes and things start getting silly. There's Bolt, who plays at double speed, which is much more difficult than it sounds. Dove, who has a flower that does no damage but confuses enemies. Monk, who dies instantly on picking up any gold (also extremely difficult, since every enemy drops gold when killed, even enemies that normally do not, creating effective deathzones). Aria, who has only one health and cannot gain more, can only use a basic dagger, and dies if you miss a beat. If you ever feel like you're actually good at the game, it has plenty of options to kick your rear end back down. And then there's Coda. Coda combines the challenges of Aria, Monk, and Bolt. Good loving luck.

The only ones I liked were Cadence (normal) and Melody (unlocked after the first run). The jumping and bomb guys were too finicky to be fun, and Aria+ are miserable. I haven't tried the expansion character yet.

I have played Monster Hunter World nearly nonstop over the weekend, and by far my favourite thing is playing little Palico dress-up. Holy poo poo putting a little jester costume on my cat and coloring it yellow is the best, or giving him a costume that's essentially a huge diving suit (complete with the tight cloth that goes over the head but exposes the face), all of it is so good. I mean the rest of the game is awesome, but hell yeah. Also making friends with all the Melynxes (wild cats, essentially) scattered around the world. Of course, I played them out of order (I didn't play T&T until after SOJ), so my opinions might be bad, but I'm excited to see where the series goes now that they've hit their stride.

Tempo is also a fun (but *very* challenging) murderhobo guy. The DLC characters are pretty much all super great except Mary.

Something that's impressive about Horizon: Zero Dawn is it makes you care about for the backstory than the ongoing plot - partially because Helios isn't very interesting, he's fun but basic. The real ire is all directed at the cause of all Earth's strife, Ted Faro Simply through the presentation. Helios is personal to Aloy due to being the guy who killed her adoptive father, but the player cares about the other person because they're just soooo hateable. You get a real, visceral feeling of gently caress THIS PERSON that you rarely get in games - most good villains are fun, like Killbane and the head of Ultor in Saints Row, or the Joker in Batman, or impressive like Batman Arkham Origin's take on Bane, but Horizon's villain is the only one people really hate in a real, would punch his mocap actor if seen IRL kind of way. Like Joffrey in Game of Thrones. It's especially fun seeing new players get far enough that they inevitably post something along the lines of gently caress TED! in the Horizon thread.
