Just wear the fucking mask, Bob

I don't care how many people I probably infected with COVID-19 while refusing to wear a mask, my comfort is far more important than the health and safety of everyone around me!

Oh, I got a call back about a job I applied for last week.

"I don't see that you have any programming experience."

Ummm my last job I was a web developer for 4 years...

"Right, but we're looking for a programmer."

Uhmm that's the same thing

"Ruby and Python? I've never heard of those languages."

OK BYE

At my previous job, I sent a streaming media appliance to a MAJOR CABLE TV NEWS STATION, it ran Ubuntu, but it was basically an appliance that had no network access or anything besides being connected on one end to a dedicated internet line, and the other end was A/V out, so there was zero chance of network contamination.

The DIRECTOR OF TECHNOLOGY for the MAJOR CABLE TV NEWS STATION sent me back a nasty email in mostly caps: "I DON'T KNOW WHAT UBUNTUS IS, OR WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE BUT I WILL NOT PUT ANYTHING ON MY NETWORK THAT I CAN'T INSTALL MCAFEE ANTIVIRUS."

I printed up the email and hung it on my cubicle until my boss made me take it down.

Imagine being in charge of a MAJOR CABLE TV NEWS STATIONS technology and not knowing what Ubuntu is.

I did a couple hours of work for a previous employer this year, and invoiced them each time (2 visits, total)

Once was in October, once was in December. Have I gotten paid? No. My contact there kept asking if received a check and was trying to get their accounting department to sort it out, but I haven't heard from him this year after a couple emails/text messages. I guess I have to find out who the accounts payable contact is over there now. They've been bought/sold so many times since I left a couple years ago.

It's < $1,000 but it's such a pain in the rear end to collect money from people.

Maybe it's time to threaten Small Claims Court and then follow through if there's no payments forthcoming.

$AWFUL_JOB did that sort of thing, a few times I had some friends help out and consult, and they just didn't pay. I'd mention it and guy would just laugh. A few times he told me if it's worth them suing us, let them, we'll pay them half like we usually do and they'll go away, it's not worth their time to sue us for $1000.

In our team meeting: Great news, we’re moving to full BYOD and cutting the stipend in half. Also making some people not qualify. We’ll save over a half a million over three years.

Of course that costs me $1,300 over three years, and possibly $2,609 because I’m not sure if I would qualify based on the proposed criteria. But it’s still good news, everyone be happy!

Small claims allows you have the defendant reimburse any court fees if you win. And with a signed contract and invoices, you'll win.

Yeah, this is exactly what small claims is for and its shockingly easy to get resolved. The only thing is that it normally takes a few months to get heard.

Oh, I know, but he'd keep pushing to see how little they'd except. I suppose a contractor they own $500 to would be happy to just get 375 and be done with it, instead of waiting months for small claims.

The proper solution is to repossess the work - go back and revert everything to the pre-original-work state.

Oh, there were other things done, updates applied and data added since that point? Ain't that a shame, the clock just got hard-reset. <evil_laugh>

In entirely-unrelated news, a package came into our mailroom... addressed to someone not on staff (according to HR) and not a client (according to med records).

1x "couples" vibrating toy
1x med. bottle of lube
1x med. bottle of misting toy cleaner
1x "sexy massage kit"
1x sexy blindfold
1x 2-pack of Energizer AAs
1x sexy velvet storage bag (backordered - should ship by the 3rd)

YOU DUMB SHITS

Almost every piece of incoming mail is opened and inspected here. (C-levels and confidential-to-named people excepted.) It is therefore important to make sure anything you elect to receive at work be... *not* inappropriate.

I don't have my booze or drugs sent here, I don't have my loving ammo sent here (or my loving-ammo, either :quagmire:), whatever possessed someone to have their Adam & Eve order shipped to work? Our mail-room guy will be having *words* with someone about this... (I already had to help him find USPS Form 1500 to get the company off the mailing list for a couple other adult entertainment suppliers)

I figure there's about a 70% chance it's an employee who hasn't properly filed a name change, and out of the handful that have that first name, I *really* don't want that kind of mental image of them. :barf:

Oh, and our main center was locked down for like half an hour the other day, just someone announcing they were gonna shoot themselves in the lobby, NBD.

We’re a construction company, so a lot of people probably wouldn’t qualify, there’s going to be phone requirements (No, your Samsung S2 isn’t supported), and it’s limited to problems with our software. You get a bunch of viruses, go to Best Buy / the Apple Store. Probably reception stuff too, but viruses or general slowness or someone running over their phone with their gravel truck isn’t our problem.

They are thinking about maybe getting a discount program set up with Otterbox though, since company phones currently come with otterboxes.

What does it say about you that you are less outraged about your employer opening someone's mail, and that you have been given an itemized list of the contents of someone's mail, than you are of the fact that your employer opens and "inspects" all incoming mail, even when the employer is explicitly not the recipient?

I also just found out that I can no longer leave early / late for a meeting or appointment and just make it up later in the week. Now I would have to use PTO. Guess who just went to a punch clock mentality until he has the skills to find something better?

Strangely, no. Fantastic year last year. The company portion of our bonus this year was 100%. So was the department portion. Company as a whole went from -40 million last year to +9 million this year.

My manager said it’s because when I leave for a short day someone else has to step up in my position. Doesn’t make a ton of sense to me since 90% of what I do is projects. At least I can take long lunches still or come in early/late on the same day. So I won’t have to use PTO for apartment hunting.

Some places (like here) give money every couple of years to either buy a cheap phone or take the sting out of an expensive phone. What pisses me off is that the stipend we got was enough to completely cover my wife and I on MetroPCS. Probably on Cricket too, which we might do eventually. So now I basically have one more bill to budget for.

It might be regional legal requirements, my company is required to have any packages (not mail) delivered to our company loading dock be opened to verify the contents.
