I agree y'all: helping your friend with her mom so she stops thinking of her as a substitue for her own faiked ambitions and instead lets her live her own life and fulfill her own dreams is truly hosed up. He's going straight from 0 to Mementos without so much as asking for Hifumi's input. That's the problem. Maybe she doesn't feel quite so pressed in yet that she's ready to put her trust in something as illogical as the Phantom Thieves, and maybe she is. But Maaku doesn't know because he hasn't asked. Yeah, when it comes to how loving stacked the deck is against those who don't fall in line, and how people abuse power - this game does great, but the Those Two Gay Guys and the gross fanservice Ann and to a lesser extent Makoto (who are still loving minors) are subjected to drags the game down and muddles the issue.
