Yeah, that's another division down. Does the game provide you with a report on what individual units die in various sinkings? Because those were probably Marines given the high number of combat squads and the specific ships that came with them.

Also, drat, the Japanese strategic defense plan of using land-based aircraft from multiple mutually supporting islands is actually working in this timeline.

It's been a lot of fun. This is my first campaign, though I've been reading Grey's LPs since the first Japanese one years ago.

So far I'm holding and may push back in Burma. Once I learned how to combine units, I merged all the Australians that spawn in Aden into divisions and dropped them into Rangoon. After months of bombardments, air attacks, and attacking I'm starting to kill off non-combat squads, a sign I'm starting to win. I've been sending ships in to bombard Pego, Moulemin, and Tavoy to keep enemy reinforcements and plane numbers down.

The AI loves to reinforce the DEI with a few ships at a time, I've found sending a DD from Darwin at the newest invasion bags a few cargo or transports. I'm doing the same hit-and-runs out of Pago into the Marianas

I saved most of the S-boats and Dutch subs, dropped them into Darwin and am hoping to hit the tankers once the AI sends them. For now they're collecting the occasional AK.

The AI is going hard after PM and Darwin. I've lost 3 carriers so far defending, leaving 2 that I'm keeping in reserve at Pearl. Right now the plan is to flood the area with any fighter I can buy out and drop them in Aus, PM, and Noumea.

Since the Marianas are pretty lightly defended the plan is to drop into an island in Fall 42 and build up a base. I haven't run an invasion, so it's learning time! My cooks and MPs are ready to hit the beach.

Thanks for posting this, I love reading the stories that this game produces.

What kind of orders are you giving your troops in Rangoon? I've got about 60,000 dudes there in March of 42. For now I'm content to just defend but at some point I want to start pushing back. Should I be having my guys bombard, or only do that when I want to soften up the Japanese to attack? I've got everyone defending for now.

Does anyone know offhand how many merchant ships Japan starts the game with? I think I've sunk north of 200 cargo/transport ships in the first 3 months, which feels pretty good, but I don't have a good sense of the scale of their merchant marine.

The AI is still going to be able to assemble a force that will eventually overwhelm Grey, even if purely by accident.

And Grey does not have enough forces to repel that many accidents.

I’m setting all units that can to bombard, and launching a deliberate attack once a week. The Japanese attacks hurt them more than us, so I schedule my attack after theirs.

The grogs on the matrix forums are very against, for what it’s worth. They insist you can get much better results with manual sub ops. But these are dudes who don’t seem to have a concept of when something is “good enough” and when something is technically better, but beyond the point of diminishing returns.

Relatedly, is there a relatively simple/bang for your buck method of doing Allied pilot training? The matrix forums of course have very intricate recommendations for how to shuffle your guys between different squadrons to get all the most important skills etc. I just want my guys to be good enough, but I have no idea how to find the sweet spot of effort on my part (if there even is one).

I don't bother with auto sub ops, as you can park them on patrol in a single hex, then leave them alone and they will return on their own when out of ammo or damaged. You don't have to worry about running out of fuel that way so it's very hands off but still gives you some control.

Yeah I think subs are pretty easy to manage on your own once you spend an hour or so giving them initial orders since they sort of trickle back and forth after that. I also like making sure that they actually upgrade and repair themselves as well when they are back in port.

Auto sub ops does some dumb things with its patrol zones (including "defensive patrols" around islands you already own), and concentrating your sub patrols in crowded lanes (Makassar Strait, Luzon Strait) greatly enhances their effectiveness at the cost of slightly higher operational losses. Not that that means much, since Japanese ASW is abysmal. It adds a bit to the turn 2 clickfest but after that it's manageable, since only 1 or 2 subs will need reassignment at a time.

Of course, if you play Japanese with the historical sub doctrine, you'll want to be microing a lot more, prepositioning your subs near the site of the decisive battle and major naval ports, since they'll rarely attack merchant vessels.

Here's what worked for me.

Training routine

1) Find squadrons to set as training. Basically any one stuck in the US is useful for this. Also more backwater areas (like Pearl Harbor) can contain some of these.

2) Set up each squadron to train a specific skill *(more on this below).

You don't even have to keep a list of these squadrons, you can always open your squadron list window and sort by the mission type to get all the ones set to training.

3) Once every so often (per week, per month, per two months, etc.), look at the roster of each training squadron and remove any pilot who has hit 70 in the trained skill back to the main pilot pool. Fill in the open slots with noobs.

4) When filling in active combat squadron openings, go to your pilot pool, sort by the skill needed by the squadron, and start picking guys at or over 70.

What I like about this is requires a minimum of record keeping, and allows you to decide how much time to put into it by setting how often you go through and graduate/recruit new members. As the Allies, you don't have to micromanage much so that can be relatively infrequently. Do what works for you!

Adjust the distribution of training squadrons dynamically based on your needs. If you are short one type of pilot, either add another squadron to the training regimin, or convert one that is training guys you already have tons of.

Once a pilot has skills = 70 where you need him, you can put him in a squadron doing CAP behind the lines to bring up his experience.

That's it.

Deeper Dive: What do these skills mean and who needs them?
For less work, just pick the most important single skill for each role from the list below. The main exception is try to get guys going to carrier-borne attack squadrons some naval search training as well, as some of them will fill that role and it's super important.

ASW: ASW
Tran: Air transport
GrdB: Level bombing and dive bombing of ground targets
LowN: Bombing of ships under 6000'
LowG: Bombing of ground targets under 6000'

Defn: Air-to-Air DEFENSE

Part II - Mission Skills

skills affected by mission:
Air = Escort, Sweep, CAP, Long Range CAP
NavB = Naval Attack, Kamikaze
NavT = Naval Attack (if a/c has torpedoes)
NavS = Naval Search
Recn = Recon
ASW = ASW Patrol
Tran = Supply Transport, Troop Transport

Staf = Any offensive mission when altitude is 100'
Defn = Can be affected by any mission (usually a random/default selection)

Part III - Training Tactics

1) Mission altitudes under 6000' are considered low.
2) To train LowN and LowG skills, set altitude between 100' - 5000'.
3) To train Straf skill, set altitude to 100'.
4) To gain skill in Air and Defn for BOMBERS, use General Training.
5) Fighters training at 100' have a chance to train Air as well as Staf.
6) For Attack bombers, train LowN and Staf.
7) For Med bombers, train NavB, NavS, and ASW.
8) For Patrol planes, train NavB, NavT(if equipped), NavS, and ASW.
9) For Recon planes, train Recn and NavS.
10) For fighters, train Air and Staf.

I included this image as it shows how to set a training squadron to train a specific skill. This comes from Matrix forums user richlove.
