Can anyone recommend a good YT channel for the basics of this game? Also I have the choice for using a 360 controller or keyboard. Is the controller viable?

Every time you drop into a ring, pirates spawn on top of you. Never drop in half-full, always go sell or deposit what you have.

Whether you deploy hardpoints or not in that situation is entirely up to you. edit: what the gently caress, you stole my brain!

So I went searching for a good X52 bind setup and I found one. Maybe people already know about it but I thought I would post it. You can get it here for either the X52 Pro or just X52: https://github.com/X52EliteSetup You have to first use a special profile for Logitech's controller software because it uses the three way switch on the joystick to switch between flight, landing, and drive modes. Each mode maps your buttons to new inputs on the keyboard thus the need to use the Logitech software. The whole point is that it virtually eliminates the need for using your keyboard as every command is available on the hotas. So far I have found the layout to be very intuitive. The only annoying thing I found is that when you select focus on your comms the buttons you press will start typing things in the text box since it is using remapped keyboard buttons but you can work around that. jubjub64 fucked around with this message at 23:38 on Jan 31, 2018 |

Bring lots of heat sinks because you'll find yourself wedged between double-B:s every other jump (and occasionally between a B and a black hole… which is not a good place to be at all). Some day, I'll figure out where the dying star field I stumbled across on my way back from there actually was and give that as a tip instead, because it was actually a much neater place — it was shock full of carbon-type stars (of all kinds… an by shock full, I mean there were a couple of dozens of them, which is a lot in relation to how rare they are in general). I'd say the neutron fields ~3kLy “west” of Colonia as well, not just because I claimed half of them, but because there are so many silly earthlikes and terraformables there in positions where you'd never expect to find them, but at that point, you've go so far beyond what Palin needs that you'll end up forgetting why you went there in the first place.

Instead of using modes on my X52, I just use the pinky trigger on the stick as a shift button for a few specific things. That's enough to keep everything I need bound on the stick for normal play. However the one thing I use keyboard and mouse for is to drive the external camera around like I'm playing an FPS with noclip enabled. It's very precise and leaves the HOTAS free to fly while using the camera. Using macros for the distributor is a lifesaver though. I have the stick's hat switch set up so that each direction puts 4 pips in the corresponding area and 1 pip in each of the others. It's so much easier to rapidly switch between what you need in the middle of a fight that way.
