Just play Kindred Spirits instead, please.

Speaking of, a full-voice version of that with extra art and stuff was just released in Japan today. I wonder if that will ever come over here (or if not, if anyone will release a patch to add that stuff to the English version).

I've poking around the "Backstage" extra for Fata Morgan and it's pretty silly and cool. The part where Michel gets to confront Aimee, tell her off and gets to show how much happier he is now, and Morgana calls her the worst person in the story was pretty gratifying.

EDIT: Wait, there's a follow up VN? And it already came out two years ago?

yeah it's like 58% of the way localized. can't wait

Haha, yeah I found that out soon after making that most. Saw the trailer, it's an interesting place to put that game. We kind of already know what happened there, right? But I wouldn't say no to more Fata Morgana

Also, there's a collected version on the Vita, and that version contains a new section set in modern day? With new sprites and voice acting?

Well, I finished Fata Morgana, including the Backstage section. It’s a great game, one that just screams effort at every level, from the extremely well thought out story to the wonderful music and artwork. It was not perfect; there were a few sections that veered too close to torture porn for my taste, and the almost total lack of humor (at least until Chapter 8) might turn some people off. Still, overall, it is a fantastic visual novel. Like Steins;Gate and 999, I think Fata Morgana is going to stick with me for a long time.

9 out of 10.

Who is this imaginary person whose complaint is "This horror game doesn't have enough jokes in it"?

I think the game could have used a scene where a young Michel slips on a banana peel and says "well my life can't get much worse than this!" with some wacky sound effect

I'm headed quickly towards the final door of FM and I can't believe the ride I've been on. Door 7 and forward have been a roller coaster of emotions.

I do agree that (Post Door 7 Spoilers) Aimee's poo poo was a bit too much. They went whole hog on Michel's suffering. Before Aimee's torture, I was content with the period's fears acting out as I expected but then that and drat.

Oh, side note, if no one has heard, Muv Luv is going to get "delisted" from Steam and then put back by the new team. I'm not sure what that's gonna mean for people who bought the old version since I doubt it'll get any patches. :sigh: Some of these VN releases have been such a cluster gently caress.

Why did they change companies? Ran out of funding?

Also, exactly how much is cut out in the Steam version of Alternative, does anyone know? I'd love to be able to recommend a version of it without the horribly unnecessary and disgustingly voyeuristic scene with Sumika and the BETA near the end that basically made me go from "charitably tolerating the h-game nonsense" to "actively resenting it", but I think scenes like Takeru's teacher whose name I can't remember getting her head caved in by a BETA are also pretty important for the Muv Luv experience. I'm not sure if something like that is severe enough to be excised from Steam.

From what I understand, it's just the H content that's cut. It probably does away with the 1st spoilered scene but the other generally isn't an issue.

The company change is apparently something that was planned eventually but got accelerated due to Degica being kinda crappy on moving things forward? At least, that's how it read to me over the course of release.

Edit: Anyone know how NSFW Kara no Shoujo is? I'm not worried about violence but just nudity really. If it isn't kosher to discuss that one, I'll drop the questions.

Here's something about Fata Morgana that I forgot about while playing it. What about the scene early on where Michel looks in a mirror and sees he and the Maid have no reflection?? What's going on there. I know Michel is like, a ghost man at that point but what about the Maid

wasn't she like a ghost lady at that point? I thought both of them were basically spirits or whatever in the mansion

You’re both missing the obvious metaphor here: neither character is aware of their true identity at this point, so they’re unable to see themselves as they truly are.

This isn't the best place to ask this but hell, you guys would know. How were the manga adaptations of Higurashi and Umineko? They're both decently priced right now and I wouldn't mind exploring those stories from a non visual novel angle.

Irony Be My Shield
Jul 29, 2012

The Umineko manga has quite a lot of additional content in the last two arcs - it answers everything in much more explicit detail than the VNs did. Not everyone liked that but I found it interesting for confirmation purposes.

In terms of general quality I'm not sure, I think it's by different artists so it varies a bit.

I only read the first three arcs of the Higurashi manga, but I remember it being fine? Unremarkable; workmanlike. Certainly not a substitute for the VN.

The biggest problem I have with both Higurashi/Umineko's manga adaptions is how overly exaggerated the expressions are during "scary" moments.

There was one interesting additional cameo in Higurashi's Matsuribayashi manga: Amakusa is one of the Yamainu

The Umineko manga is quite good from what I hear and a viable way to experience the story (unlike the anime)

The manga doesn't have the OST though. Neither does the anime for the most part.

Just one more thing!
Finally got back to Chaos;Child and cleared the Kazuki route. I had to use a guide because they couldn't be bothered to translate the map I guess. That was a pretty fun route though I wish they'd done a bit more with it. I do appreciate the idea that they may have ruined the world out of spite just to stick it to Wakui.

edit:

Kurusu route and common route spoilers Late in the common route I started to suspect that Kurusu is actually Senri Minamisawa, and that's the lie she told that about seeing Senri die- she actually watched Kurusu die and lived on as her. It would also fill in a couple other things like she was so sure Serika was lying about being in the facility with Takuru that day. I'm at the scene where Kawahara is confessing and talking about how much he disliked Senri being in the way and her reaction looks more like one of rejection than mere offense. So I am assuming I'm right and that's the direction this is going.

A couple lines later and she says that Senri was her friend and Arimura has a reaction. A silent one, but a reaction. She's definitely Senri. Nice.

If you're anywhere not in NA the solution that Sekai is giving is:
•Create a fake NA PSN account
•Buy a Vita memory card*
•Swap memory cards and factory reset the system every time you want to play and every time after you're done.

Simple, right? :downs:

*buying another Vita would also work I suppose.

Unless Sony have changed their rules recently, they also won''t take a non-local credit card, so you'd also have to buy a prepaid North American PSN card online.

$6 for Root Double alone is amazing value.

It doesn't let you determine the split between developers, so the only way to ensure the HuniePop guy doesn't get any of your money is to give it all to charity. With apologies to Sekai Project and yeti/regista I recommend that anyone buying the bundle do the right thing.

The very beginning and very end set up the rest of the series, but the main story is 100% self-contained. The main characters go somewhere, do a thing to completion, and leave.
