One key trick for the US pilot training (since USN and USAAC have different pools) is to train Naval pilots NavB, NavS, and Air/Def on the multiple squadrons of static OS2Us you get in LA and San Diego, letting you forward deploy the F4Fs and Dive Bomber squadrons on carriers. You can also Train NavT using a single squadron of Catalinas with the "using torpedoes" option at 5k feet or below.
This last part is particularly useful since many of your Vindicator squadrons will default upgrade into TBFs and you won't be able to train the squadron itself for torp attacks- so instead, you build up a bunch of pilots on the Catalinas in the months before the switch, then swap them into the upgraded squadrons. The pilots from the squadrons will already be experienced dive bomber pilots, so you can keep them as reserve replacements for Marine/Navy dive bombers.

Also, wear your bike helmets kids. I copped several blows to the head but my helmet left me totally unscathed.

Finally you should check out First Dog as it's a good comic I like it very much.

I don't think you all understand the sheer brilliance of the allied AI plan here. They aren't losing enormous convoys of ships, weapons, supplies, and vehicles. They are garrisoning the ocean floor. With the majority of the theatre being ocean, they can claim to hold a vast amount of it, and that they are driving back the perfidious Japanese.

Heads won't roll over this. The man in charge will be promoted.

Here's what worked for me.

Training routine

1) Find squadrons to set as training. Basically any one stuck in the US is useful for this. Also more backwater areas (like Pearl Harbor) can contain some of these.

2) Set up each squadron to train a specific skill *(more on this below).

You don't even have to keep a list of these squadrons, you can always open your squadron list window and sort by the mission type to get all the ones set to training.

3) Once every so often (per week, per month, per two months, etc.), look at the roster of each training squadron and remove any pilot who has hit 70 in the trained skill back to the main pilot pool. Fill in the open slots with noobs.

4) When filling in active combat squadron openings, go to your pilot pool, sort by the skill needed by the squadron, and start picking guys at or over 70.

What I like about this is requires a minimum of record keeping, and allows you to decide how much time to put into it by setting how often you go through and graduate/recruit new members. As the Allies, you don't have to micromanage much so that can be relatively infrequently. Do what works for you!

Adjust the distribution of training squadrons dynamically based on your needs. If you are short one type of pilot, either add another squadron to the training regimin, or convert one that is training guys you already have tons of.

Once a pilot has skills = 70 where you need him, you can put him in a squadron doing CAP behind the lines to bring up his experience.

That's it.

Deeper Dive: What do these skills mean and who needs them?
For less work, just pick the most important single skill for each role from the list below. The main exception is try to get guys going to carrier-borne attack squadrons some naval search training as well, as some of them will fill that role and it's super important.

Deeper Dive: How do I set up a squadron to train a specific skill?

I included this image as it shows how to set a training squadron to train a specific skill. This comes from Matrix forums user richlove.
If you want to minmax you can follow the training paths below and get the different skill sets you need.

This is a great post. Thanks!

One question: after I release trained dudes from a squadron to the reserve, which pool do I draw noobs from?

pthighs
Jun 21, 2013

Pillbug
The Replacement pool is the group of pilots fresh out of flight school awaiting their first assignment. That is where you get the noobs.

The Reserve pool is where pilots go when they leave a squadron. That's where you put your trained guys until they need to get called into action.

Edit: Also make sure all training squadrons are set at range 0 to keep pilot and airframe fatigue down.

Awesome. Thanks.

This pilot stuff is the one part of the game that I really wish was just abstracted. It seems like the only real choice is how many training squadrons you want to have and beyond that it's pure busywork.

More Marines hit the “beach.”

There is a rare attack on Ndeni.

There are a lot of ships sailing around the Marshall Islands, but they are not doing much.

This is a good showing lads!

Another of our subs gets pounded.

If they hit Rabul like this, I'd be in some serious trouble.

These smaller waves are much easier to deal with.

We gunned down a good number of their planes today!

Tromp's reign of terror is over!

Last months report was mostly doom and gloom – not so this month!

After their successes last month, the Allies have failed to do anything this month.

Here you can see how much their offensive has stagnated – I was beginning to take a lot of high profile bases by now. They can't even take a tiny atoll.

Their bombing of Rabaul has only achieved a noticeable spike in their plane losses.

Here are our top pilots.

And our very healthy pools – I need more Zeros though!

Their ground losses have been so high that losing ten thousand men in a day doesn't even show on the graph....

Their attempted invasion of Rabaul does though. 92 ships have been sunk this month compared to our own losses of 14.

They weren't the highest value of ships though.

Let's hope this continues next month!

More likely the result of cumulative damage and in that "pulse" it sank. Since nothing hit it during that specific combat, it reports ", and sunk"

My subs can't hit anything at the moment – but they do have their depth charge magnets working!

The I-9 makes four separate attack runs before getting a hit.

The Allies begin to unload a second division of troops onto Jaluit – I'm worried this may be it for our brave defenders.

For now, its a lot of tanks floundering in the corpse-reef.

We come out ahead in a fighter scrap over Rabaul.

These guys run late and pay the price.

Another bomber is brought down.

Two fighter escorted waves in one day – this is new.

There is a lot of attrition on our air frames these days.

I think this is going to be a bad month for my air pool. I've ordered less Oscars and more Zeros to be constructed. It will take time for these changes to show any effect though.

Am I misreading this, or was that last Jaluit battle giving an experience penalty to the defenders? I don't know what soldiers have to do to be considered experienced enough by this game, but it must be really hardcore if the Jaluit guys don't make the cut.

What's happening is that the game has correctly identified that the USA's incompetency has made Jaluit's defenders learn a whole lot of bad practices that an invading force would be able to exploit if, you know, they were competent.
Thus Zapp Brannigann's genius is made manifest, as his master plan of throwing waves upon waves of men at the Japanese emplacements in Jaluit has lulled them in a false sense of complacency and dulled their battle prowess.

Maybe experience penalties are decided based on the relative experience of the attackers and defenders instead of just the experience of each side? Of course that would imply the US sent some kind of superhuman crack commando unit or something if they make the Jaluit guys seem green by comparison. I'm thinking this is what The Cobras of MGS3 fame are doing in this timeline. gently caress Normandy, the Pacific is where it's at.

I’m not sure how experience works for ground units but for ships, WITP awards experience super slowly, so you can have ships that start the war relatively experienced and spent the whole war on the sidelines end the war with more experience than a ship that started out green and was in combat constantly throughout.

Also, the experience is most likely gained per day of battle instead of per results, which would mean that those short one-day-wipe battles don't really provide much experience.

So is trying to make a resupply run to Jaluit worth it to use the ships or try and evacuate the forces there? Or with the constant USN presence is it too much a risk to send in ships to try and land supplies, reinforcements, or evacuate at the rate things are going without it turning to a full borne battle?

How does one go about deciding the relative modifiers from terrain, experience, supplies, leadership, etc. when making a game like this? Seems like a lot of  to decide which is weighted more.

Or do they just recreate D-Day or something over and over with different weights until it makes sense?

We don't really know, because the game designers have kept the inner workings of the combat system deliberately a mystery under the presumption that that will prevent people from "gaming" it and forcing them to make more "organic" decisions.
