Just watched The Way Of The Gun on Netflix for the first time in years and I had forgotten how much I like this film. Benecio Del Toro is almost always amazing and even though Ryan Phillippe is hit or miss I really liked him in this very Sam Peckinpah-esque flick written and directed by Christopher "The Usual Suspects" McQuarrie. poo poo, it even has Taye Diggs, Juliette Lewis, and James loving Caan and some really loving good gunfights. The violence is violent and the twists are twisty. This is just a cool goddamn movie through and through. Watch this if you like guns and violence and double crosses. Speaking of Phillippe, is the Shooter series any good? I quite liked the film with Mark Wahlberg. Edit: A great double feature if you're in the mood for rad gunplay is The Way Of the Gun and Christian Bale's Equilibrium. isaboo fucked around with this message at 06:45 on Feb 2, 2018 |

yeah I don't know how anyone could figure the second half of Devilman is less gonzo than the first half. if anything, I would say it's moreso, by quite a lot

The story is dated in that "Based on a 40 year old anime" sort of way. The wild and crazy parts are super entertaining and very creative, but the stuff in between, I don't know. There is better anime out there to watch if you want story over spectacle. Is "Made In Abyss" on Prime? That one is worth your time.

Altered Carbon is out! Not that Netflix did anything to make it easy for me to know that, since they thought it was way more important to jam Yet Another Special From A Malaysian Standup Comic I Have Never Heard Of as the trailer when I open it, and fill my recommended bar with the same. I had to go hunting for it.

Holy poo poo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vfugwq2uoa0&t=37s Of course, now that I think about it, is THIS thread where I actually heard about this, a couple days ago? Fine. JUDGE ME all you want. Thanks for the suggestion, I bought the book, can't wait for the flick.

First half was a teen hornies and violence balls out crazy fest.

sponges posted:Nearly all? Dodged a bullet there, we did! okay this is an extremely subject for me to be tackling and i'm asking for a lot of trust that I'm saying this in good faith, so just kind of bear with me Made in Abyss, both versions, is a story about (essentially) small children being sent to explore a hosed-up eldritch hellscape where literally everything including the air is trying to kill you. in my book, this justifies some level of "hosed up things happening to kids" before I start going "ok this poo poo was written with one hand, I'm out." the manga hit my NOPE threshold very, very, very quickly. i'm pretty sure the guy who draws the manga is an actual chomo. the anime, on the other hand, basically scales it back as far as humanly possible and only keeps what they literally couldn't change or remove, because shockingly enough they wanted it to be able to air on general-audiences TV. the very, very tiny amount of remaining sexual content has way more of a Quest for Fire vibe to it than a "weird pedo porn" vibe to it. (it's worth noting that MiA gets a bit of extra leeway from me, though, compared to other anime, because everything around the stuff is just so goddamn cool. the Abyss is one of the most badass settings I've seen in anime in a long time. Bondrewd might be legitimately one of the most awesome villains I've ever seen in an anime. even past specific things, the fact that it's essentially a hosed-up sci-fi version of your average wilderness survival movie/series is Extremely My poo poo. but even with that extra leeway, I had to go "gently caress this" on the manga, and the anime is the only version I would even slightly recommend seeking out.)

I can see why they expanded it so much, though, given how involved it is with how the Bancroft thing actually went down. Having something come up here and there works fine in a mystery novel, but in a TV series with a total of ten hours max to work with you can’t afford to be quite as subtle and have the ending work.
