always thought this anecdote from his wiki was funnyquote:Following the 2012 U.S. consulate attacks in Benghazi, Zyuganov generated controversy after a comment he made on Chris Stevens' death at the hands of armed militants in Libya by saying that U.S. ambassador was "shot like a dog" ("был убит как последняя собака"). This caused an outrage from the U.S. State Department. S. Obuhov, the press-secretary to the Russian Duma, responded: "Zyuganov meant 'the last dog' as a Russian proverb and not in the sense that it sounds in English. 'The last' represents a Russian hard-to-translate idiom, not in a negative but in a positive sense," explaining the faux pas as a colloquialism lost in translation.

I think it's important for capitalism to have these tech utopians. After all, why do you need socialism when the singularity is right around the corner? But then again that's a given, since "the singularity" might as well be the nerd rapture. It's not an actual thing that can be achieved, in real terms.

im not talking about the singularity so much as the inevitability that we’re going to continue developing machine learning to the point that ceding control of complex large scale systems to AI will be made necessary we’re only a handful of years away from the white collar skilled labour force being made obsolete by automation; the tech utopia idealism of the singularity crowd is wrong, but AI in some form is coming and it’s going to be the greatest disruption in modern history for better or for worse

Wheeee posted:im not talking about the singularity so much as the inevitability that we’re going to continue developing machine learning to the point that ceding control of complex large scale systems to AI will be made necessary I really doubt ai, atleast in the sci-fi sapient sense, is coming within our lifetimes, if it's possible at all. If you are simply talking about a system complex enough for widespread automation, again I doubt it will shake out exactly how your imagining. If only because it's cheaper to run people ragged for min wage and no benefits than to out and out automate them en masse. Machines, especially complex robotics, are more expensive than wageslaves. Capitalism always prioritizes profitability over efficiency. At the end of the day, you're gonna need consumers to buy commodities, so you're gonna need people in the workforce. Automation works as a threat to labor, not as a replacement.

gradenko_2000 posted:does the left in Russia have any kind of power at all? have the events of 2016 and onwards mobilized them relative to UK Labour or the DSA? the left has no real political power now in russia. putin is projected to win 70% of the vote in 2018 with 70% of the turnout (and given the prevalence of election fraud, that is likely to happen). the communist party of the russian federation is expected to come in second with 5% of the vote. the communist parties have a long history of being controlled opposition in putin's russia, so they are usually very careful in their critiques of the government except when it comes to the removal of statues of lenin. i dont't know if there are any grassroots style campaigns like the DSA. otoh, something like 70% of russians think that the breakup of the ussr was a mistake. also, 2016 wasn't a huge shock in russia like in the us or the uk. both brexit and trump's election were praised as positive things in the russian press and didn't really effect the russia much in the grand scheme of things. From my understanding the closest thing to a russian DSA is the Russian Socialist Movement - read their 2013 statement on the Navalny protests here in English at n+1. Their site is http://anticapitalist.ru but I do not read Russian. According to what I’ve heard they are a minuscule group and rooted in academia.
