Is there a way to mod the UI so the cockpit doesn't take up 2/3 of the viewable area at any given time?

Kind of. It's called “buy an Asp”.

Wait until you get into an anaconda. Huge rear end RV dashboard, plus the bow of a star destroyer sticking out in front of you. The front windshield wraps surprisingly far around on each side of the bridge, but at 90° left and right the windows are ~10-15 feet away from your chair

It's a great view as long as you don't care about looking up with VR or a headtracker.

For some reason the X52 Pro mode swtich doesn't come with nubs on the wheel to help with switching. Took a few minutes to model and print some nubs (sanded them a little for comfort).

This beta where everything is 90% off and engineering is 1 Iron is more fun than the actual game. Which is kind of sad really.

I've also found a new love: Quad sturdy railguns on an FDL. Of course modding those in the real game would be a 100 hour grind.

I wonder, if they just made the game an actual sandbox and focused on putting more poo poo in the sandbox than the delicate balancing act of grog we have now how the game would be.

Just thought I'd try my hand at passenger transport. I lost 2 Anacondas.

Okay the first time I didn't realize I was transporting a criminal. I got scanned on my way OUT of the starport and destroyed.

The second time though I have no idea what happened. I was delivering the first load of generic passengers into a station. I was getting scanned so I went into silent running. Just then someone came out of cruise right in front of me and we collided. I got hit with a fine but then the station opened fire and destroyed me.

Now I have a 5400 credit fine and I'm not sure for what exactly.

This is hard.

The big issue in the beta right now is still the overtuning of shields. It's possible to push shields to over 85% resis at thousands and thousands of mjs. Not sure why frontier has always been obsessed with insanely high TTKs even for medium and small ships. Shield health needs to be cut in half, at least at this point, if not by more.

Wasn't there supposed to be a change awhile ago to add harsh diminishing returns against stacking too much +% on shield boosters? Whatever happened to that?

The NPC ships will fly in and out of the station without any regard for you. So if you both are trying to use the mailslot at the same time it will just try and muscle through. The problem is that the station sees you as the aggressor and will kill you for it. So you gotta wait your turn and I would suggest using a docking computer.

Earlier today was hilarious when I accidentally turned off flight assist rigt before I docked in a station. I didn't remember my bind for turning it back on so I had to stabilize myself long enough to open my reference sheet. It probably looked hilarious from the outside.

Yes, proposals were floated around by frontier that made a lot of sense but naturally were shouted down by typical brown sea hysterics over losing their 10k mj turreted afk npc muderboats. TTK and resistance issues pretty much force everyone into running heavy faceroll PA centric builds or 25min 1v1s with about 3 reloads each.

For the record, I've always flown a 520mj biweave Fdl or a 300mj Fds and have never once felt undertanked.

The corollary is that this only applies if you're speeding. As long as you're under the speed limit it doesn't matter how many Adders get pasted on your Anaconda's canopy.

Mission timers are pointless. Why are they in the game?

It would be okay if they only counted down while playing but instead you get the worst combination possible: zero challenge because you have tens of hours, but still low enough to penalise you if real life intervenes and you can't play until the day after.

Nothing in this game makes any sense

I've been enjoying my FDL a lot lately but accidentally got a bounty in the system Im kind of based out of. So I did what any sane person would do, I bought a Vulture so when I rebuy, it's much less.

Turns out, the Vulture is more fun to fly. Doesn't have the staying power though, and doesn't make as good of a sound. But for a ship to take out when I'm wanted, knowing that when I get scanned I'll have three elite police Anacondas on me, it's great.

I think because it's got such a great setup, and because it's meant to be played to absolute loving death, the little things stand out more.

Like how someone can sidle up next to me while I'm mining, threaten to murder me, and I get in trouble if I don't give him the lazy loving eye for long enough before I shoot him apart, and the space cops swarm and kill ME

Incidentally, I was recently asked by the space cops to "surrender immediately," but I didn't and I died. Is there actually a way to surrender and if so what happens?

It is possible to enjoy a thing that has design problems. Elite has many design problems but there is fun to be found in between them.

What makes Elite unique is that FDev considers the design problems “features”, and are too arrogant to admit their mistakes.

Elite doesn't even try to have the hooks that a lot of games use to keep players entertained. The scope is just that narrow. If you arent obsessed with astronomy, spaceship simulators or metagaming (or the thargoids story lol) you'll get bored and play something else.
Even the space exploration aspect is ultimately a procedurally generated slog. There's an initial sense of wonder when you first see a neutron star or land on a planet, but after ten hours of that there's just no more novelty without a massive spike in grind to reach it. You need to be really invested to keep going and follow up stuff like the locations encoded in thargoid sounds etc.
If there was a narrative with varied in game elements or you could alter the game world to make your own story Id be instantly hooked

True enough; Elite is a mixed bag of good and bad design decisions, to be sure. I was just arguing that the claim that they "have no idea what they are doing" is a silly exaggeration.
