Oh not like, a fight on the street or anything. There was a big white collar boxing match between KSI and Joe Weller (KSI won). Ended up having about a million+ people watching it on the live stream so seems like a success all around really. KSI's a bit of a tosspot mind (yet one I can't help but watch the videos of)

It was kinda weird to see YouTubers getting the headguards on and having a bit of a (rather amateurish) scrap though. Thankfully my boys True Geordie and Laurence were commentating on it, which made the event much more palatable.

There was one feel good moment mind - a guy, even after losing, still managed to propose to his girlfriend and get a yes. Even if I'd literally never heard of the guy before public proposals still make me go "AAWWWWWWWWW" so that was cute. It wasn't actually as bad an event as could have been expected really.

EDIT: Oh, and also KSI called out Jake and Logan Paul after winning. So y'know, that's something. After diss tracks was the big trend of 2017, maybe boxing matches will be it in 2018. And KSI might be a bit of a toss but he's nothing compared to those fuckknuckles.

Laci Green is a significant enough reason why people side-eye left/left-leaning/whatever online personalities who start sounding too close to the bigots a lot more now, when it's not just someone being an rear end in a top hat obviously. Here's this person who seemingly had their head on straight, they educated a bunch of people about sex and things like that, they felt fairly trustworthy. They started making a bigger deal out of "But people on both sides" junk after tumbling into the group of bastards that everyone could pretty transparently see, people got really wary and a bunch circled the wagons as to why this is actually fine and nothing to be concerned about, then they turned and peeled out into CHUDsville after the right-winger brain worms took hold so welp.

Laci went chud at exactly the right moment to crush whatever momentum she thought she was generating by "listening to both sides," in that her new fans had that rally in Charlottesville a few months later. She hasn't done a video since April, I don't think.

What is the data on Doug Walker? He seems quite shrill and high on South Park style "Well, some people say THIS, others say THAT, but me, the reasonable middle, says SO".

On the other hand, he does seem to put in effort instead of just talking at a camera, supports other reviewers, has a charity call-out bit, and is decent enough background fodder for when I'm painting 40k and Infinity stuff.

Has he groped someone or done anything vile so I can feel retroactively bad?

No. Doug is largely fine...ish. He's a distant emotional brick who just doesn't "get" people and things and that drove a lot of people away from him (like all his site's core '10s-era talent). But really it's the fact that he's a package deal with actually toxic people like Mike Michaud and his brother Rob Walker that is a big sticking point with people.

I'm of two minds on him. I don't watch his stuff anymore and I enjoy making fun of him, but I don't actively hate him like a lot of people do.

I met him and chatted with him and family at one event, but it was in a situation where he didn't need to be "on"; he seemed reasonable and chill and I was relieved that he had at least some separation between persona and person. Maybe that's a low bar, but when someone can't separate things it tends to result in a bigger trainwreck possibility.

He's a man the race outran. He started so much with the reviewer thing but has not grown one iota as a performer or a thinker or a person. I find it hard to really muster any feelings about it all. In the grand scheme of all the other poo poo that gets revealed, "cheat on wife" seems like nothing compared to "masturbate in front of fan". Or in terms of Twitch, "go on insanely angry rant about titty streamers", "commit domestic violence", "pretend to be in wheelchair" or "masturbate on camera".

To be fair, he did try to break out from comedy reviews to try and do movie parodies instead, only to find that was an already crowded market where he couldn't get new viewers, his old viewerbase didn't respond to the new direction well, and the actual comedy in his parodies was lackluster. He's always been more about the skits than the actual reviews, but his skits aren't funny enough to stand on their own, and his reviews are shallow recitings of what happened in the movie. So he's been unable to grow because he's pigeonholed into a format that he wanted to leave behind years ago but just doesn't know how to do... anything else.

I don't dislike the skit style of reviews, and honestly I kind of miss it. I don't think I've ever seen anything as entertaining and thought provoking at the same time as the Beauty and the Beast collab review Kyle did with Tony Goldmark. Or Kyle and Lindsey when they did that Tom Green movie. There's a certain kind of raw energy they had that the more recent, polished, actual reviews and video essays don't. ContraPoints and HBomber are close but also very different in style, substance and direction.

Yes. Not worth watching at all really. TBH the only reason that Mister Metokur did a TGWTG series in the first place was because his patrons demanded it/pledged for it. There's very little in the videos that hasn't been disseminated by this thread (e.g. Doug's attempts to branch out failed, Noah was great but then got fired from the site and lost his smile, Joe has fights with his fans), plus the odd ludicrous conspiracy/rumour. In short, they suck.

Metokur is more at home covering people like Terry A. Davis (man behind an OS that can apparently talk to Jesus), Nick Bate (possibly the most depraved man in the history of the Internet), or (more recently) the people who tried to catfish DSP...now those are vids worth watching.

EDIT: And yes, he is a GG'er, sort of. He indirectly created the term, even - back when he was Internet Aristocrat, he was the man behind the "Quinnspiracy Theory" series of vids, which was the original name for it all. Adam Baldwin, of all people, then retweeted the first of the vids with the GamerGate hashtag, and thus gave the movement its name. Metokur left GG not long after and nuked his entire Internet Aristocrat account because 1: he didn't like the highly politically charged "muh ethics" path the movement took when people like Milo got involved and 2: he didn't want to be seen as one of its leaders.

(That's just an explanation btw, not really an attempt to justify him or anything.)

Yeah, this jives well with my own feelings. For actual goofy/funny movie analysis, the RLM guys work a lot better for me, and they are backed by enough actual knowledge that it's also interesting. So even when you don't really agree with their verdict, you can still get entertained by their antics. And for actual in-depth material, there's Brad, Linday, Kyle and others who can actuall string three thoughts together.

I can appreciate his effort and energy at points (hell, his The Shining review is both insightful and actually funny), but the age of Shouty Youtube Person has passed. Or rather, it has moved on to Shouty Youtube Drama Figure/Fascist Cult Leader.
