Apologies for linking to Fox but this interview with Mahoney is heartwarming and explains that he died doing what he loved and he beat cancer twice to live to nearly 80 and was basically a boss and a 1/2 :Aww he talks about how they were all best friends forever after the show Bust Rodd fucked around with this message at 15:15 on Feb 7, 2018 |

Martin Crane posted:You know, I used to think you two took after your mother, liking the ballet and all that, but your mother liked a good ball game too. She even had a hot dog once in a while. She may have had fancy tastes, but she had too much class to ever make me or anybody else feel second-rate. If she saw the way you two have behaved tonight, she'd be ashamed.

I rewatched this episode tonight due to your post and it was choice. Knowing that this is coming, all the lovely comments Frasier and Niles are making about the restaurant just look horrible. Even though they're presented as laugh lines with the laugh track going. It really fucks with the audience in a good way. Also, third episode of the series, and this lays down a major theme for the next 11 seasons. Frasier and Niles are lovely people. Their snobbery is played for laughs but it's still a basically lovely thing.

Frasier was a specialist subject on tonight's Mastermind. Some good Qs too - like the name of Le Freres Hereux, Bibi's name, who played Jackson Hedley.

Yeah, I don't know if they planned it that way, but Martin coming down hard like that so early in the series was a great move. However, he was written to be a lot less grumpy season 2+, which I think was a generally good decision, but I wish he would've kept a little bit more of his season 1 edge throughout the series.

And by season what, 6(?) he's pretending to be gay not to embarrass Frasier. Yeah.

I guess you could argue that he was super grumpy S1 because he was pissed about having to move in with his son/losing independence (which he definitely was), but grew to be comfortable enough the situation that he was pretending to be gay only a few years later. His attitude change still never really seemed organic though.

His attitude change still never really seemed organic though. I don't think he was the same character anymore after season 4 or 5 to be honest. When they lost that friction between Frasier and Marty (I understand that a conflict between two characters only carries so far) I think the show kind of lost its point. In the end it was just Frasier being a douche to women over and over again and Niles losing everything that was interesting and funny about him when they hooked him up with Daphne. The dudes a loving creep and a brilliant one at that, he gets off sniffing womens shoes and masturbating in the closet, he's def not dream husband material. Such a letdown.

Marty started to date and stopped being a huge prick to his kids, how is that not believable? It’s true about Niles though. Frazier getting more and more into himself makes perfect sense but Niles just takes a backseat to Niles & Daphne. Someday I’ll finish the show, but I’d honestly rather rewatch 1-8 than finish 9-10-11

I stopped being able to be impressed by the show after niles + daphne got together. It was just so friggin contrived. I’m on season 10 but it’s seemed like such a slog to keep going. Is it worth finishing?

Looking back, the decision to actually hook up Niles and Daphne was bad, but there must have been such pressure at the time to do it as a ratings stunt, all of the will-they-wont-theys of the era always ended up landing on "they will", usually during sweeps. It completely changes Niles character and you lose all the humor of Daphne's obliviousness towards his obvious affections.

Season 11 is better than the previous few, but yeah it probably should have ended sooner than it did.

If you’re going to do a will they won’t they, then the characters have to get together at some point. You can either get it out the way in early seasons, but then you’re stuck with the post breakup storylines where they try to date other people. At least they waited til late in the show.
