Calling her “leader” instead of “President” seems okay in Chinese, as I understand it. Another thing they do is to refer to “the government on Taiwan” rather than “of Taiwan”.

But calling her "leader" acknowledges the reality of the situation, just using a different (perceived as "lesser") word. It's just a huge cognitive dissonance thing to me. They believe that Taiwan is currently a part of China and are going to include it on all maps as if it is just another province, but when they talk about Tsai Ying-wen or any number of other issues they have to acknowledge it's not actually at all a part of China, but they will use petty fake words to show they are big babies about it. My best understanding of it is that they are brainwashed to believe that "CHINA" is something much greater than just some sovereign state like any other country in the world. It is the center of everything and the only thing that matters, and Taiwan is part of this greater thing regardless of its current political status. This is all just really goofy brainwashing though entirely removed from reality, so when they are talking about how it is part of China with a straight face, they are talking about this greater abstract idea of "CHINA" while when talking about the government of Taiwan, they are going back to that lower level of a regular country, acknowledging sort of that "Taiwan" has the trappings of a regular country, but knowing that it is entirely superceded by this grander concept they made up to save face and brainwash people with.

In other Taiwan-related news that I’m sure will displease the mainland, the annual US-Taiwan Defense Industry Conference will be held in Taiwan for the first time this year.quote:The US-Taiwan Defense Industry Conference is to be held in Taiwan for the first time, a senior official involved in the conference said, adding that as a result of the US’ Taiwan Travel Act — which is yet to be passed — that would remove restrictions on visits by high-level US officials, the likelihood of important US government officials attending is very high.

The Germans had a similar identity crisis over just what it meant to be a German, but they were unifying from a bunch of squabbling states. I'm not sure what the PRC's deal is - they've got the mainland locked down nicely, so where does the need to stake a claim to other ethnic Chinese come from?

Welp another accident on one of Hong Kong's most dangerous roads. What I've heard it's the bus was full of people who had been coming back from the racetrack, had lost their money, and were angry at the driver for being like ten minutes late, so decided to yell at and insult the driver. https://twitter.com/b3108/status/962281015740841985

During our coverage of the Parade of Nations on Friday we said it was notable that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made the trip to Korea for the Olympics, “representing Japan, a country which occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945 but every Korean will tell you that Japan is a cultural, technological and economic example that has been so important to their own transformation.” We understand the Korean people were insulted by these comments and we apologize.
