Calling her “leader” instead of “President” seems okay in Chinese, as I understand it. Another thing they do is to refer to “the government on Taiwan” rather than “of Taiwan”.

But calling her "leader" acknowledges the reality of the situation, just using a different (perceived as "lesser") word.

It's just a huge cognitive dissonance thing to me. They believe that Taiwan is currently a part of China and are going to include it on all maps as if it is just another province, but when they talk about Tsai Ying-wen or any number of other issues they have to acknowledge it's not actually at all a part of China, but they will use petty fake words to show they are big babies about it.

My best understanding of it is that they are brainwashed to believe that "CHINA" is something much greater than just some sovereign state like any other country in the world. It is the center of everything and the only thing that matters, and Taiwan is part of this greater thing regardless of its current political status. This is all just really goofy brainwashing though entirely removed from reality, so when they are talking about how it is part of China with a straight face, they are talking about this greater abstract idea of "CHINA" while when talking about the government of Taiwan, they are going back to that lower level of a regular country, acknowledging sort of that "Taiwan" has the trappings of a regular country, but knowing that it is entirely superceded by this grander concept they made up to save face and brainwash people with.

In other Taiwan-related news that I’m sure will displease the mainland, the annual US-Taiwan Defense Industry Conference will be held in Taiwan for the first time this year.

quote:

The US-Taiwan Defense Industry Conference is to be held in Taiwan for the first time, a senior official involved in the conference said, adding that as a result of the US’ Taiwan Travel Act — which is yet to be passed — that would remove restrictions on visits by high-level US officials, the likelihood of important US government officials attending is very high.

The conference was first held in 2002 and had always been hosted in the US. The event, cohosted by the US-Taiwan Business Council and the Taiwan Defense Industry Development Association, is scheduled for May and is expected to span five days.

The Germans had a similar identity crisis over just what it meant to be a German, but they were unifying from a bunch of squabbling states. I'm not sure what the PRC's deal is - they've got the mainland locked down nicely, so where does the need to stake a claim to other ethnic Chinese come from?

The PRC term for her is "Leader of Taiwan," which I honestly don't see how that in any way reduces her role or saves face etc.

edit: This gets me riled up thinking about. It's like on one hand they have to do this stupid face-saving "play dumb" act where they insist it's a part of China and just a province of China. Like you say, if they were going all-in on this they would assign some retard in Fujian or something who is a party member as the "Provincial Governer" and just deny that Tsai Yin-wen has any status or is anything other than a rebel or separatist or whatever.

The fact that they call her "leader" is like...okay so I guess Taiwan ISN'T part of China since China didn't at all appoint her as leader and because the PRC has zero control over her. Is calling her "leader" rather than "president" at all maintaining the illusion that Taiwan is part of China?

if we've learned anything at all, it is that AO posts best when he is riled up, so get him all riled up and then tell him to write some truly great fictional story about Han Ping'an, the store clerk on the 5th ring road outside of Beijing.

Magic: the Gathering also does this. The Taiwan team competes at the World Championships as "Chinese Taipei", distinct from "China", and there is a clip of their British buffoon commentator saying "the Taiwanese team" and his co-commentator muttering "oh poo poo" on camera before she gets it together and deliberately says "Chinese Taipei" loudly in the next sentence.
