Just cleaning house and dug my little Criterion collection out of the closet. Think I'll regret selling any of these down the line? I went a little nuts on a B&N sale back in 2010 but gone all digital for the past few years. :\

Last Year at Marienbad, Le Cercle Rouge, and Pierrot Le Fou are all OOP, so I'd hang on to them unless you just hated the movies.

Escobarbarian posted:Don’t post porn on the forums Egbert Back in 2008 when I was contemplating getting into Blu-ray, I was thinking that there's no way silents would ever reach the format between the expense and the perceived low demand. Even for the biggest titles like Joan of Arc, what could possibly be done with a film that survives only as a worn print? It's 2018 now. Most of the films of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton are on Blu-ray. Films like Napoleon, The Big Parade, and Wings got full digital restorations after decades of being out of print entirely on video. There's even silents that never even got a real VHS or laserdisc release, but got their first proper home video edition on Blu-ray (like Lonesome and People on Sunday; most of the recent titles Kino is handling). I really hope Criterion gets to raid WB's silents library for stuff like The Crowd, Greed, The Cameraman, silent Ben-Hur, and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

I can’t believe how amazing the silents look. The Cabinet of Dr. Cagliari comes to mind. It’s amazing the prints have looked this good the whole time, and 100 years later we have the technology to enjoy them. I have a few if the Chaplin’s but want to expand more on my collection of silents. People On Sunday is gorgeous, but I always fall asleep (in a good way, the soundtrack is great) Definitely will be picking up Joan Of Arc

Here's the definitive silents I'd pick up, all from stellar restorations: Safety Last! - 2K restoration from Harold Lloyd's 35mm nitrate print The Freshman - 4K restoration Speedy - 4K restoration Intolerance (US: Cohen/UK: Masters of Cinema) - 2K restoration The Thief of Bagdad (Cohen/Masters of Cinema) - 2K restoration Metropolis (Kino/Masters of Cinema) The Big Parade (WB) - 4K restoration from the camera negative (primarily) Wings (Paramount) - 4K restoration Sunrise (Fox/Masters of Cinema) - while in rough shape, it actually adds to the film and looks beautiful on Blu-ray Man with a Movie Camera (Masters of Cinema) - 2K restoration from Dziga Vertov's 35mm nitrate print [skip the US edition with bad compression] Napoleon (BFI UK) - 2K restoration from Kevin Brownlow's 5 1/2 hr restoration, only silent with a 7.1 orchestral score! The Phantom of the Opera (BFI) - 2K restoration, only edition to have true HD master of 16mm-based original cut Buster Keaton Short Films (Kino or Masters of Cinema) - 2K restorations Also, the US should start to get the new 4K restorations of Keaton's features, but Masters of Cinema released the first volume with The General, Steamboat Bill Jr, and Sherlock Jr not long ago.

BTW, if anyone is into Buster Keaton at all there's a great podcast that's been going through each of his short films week by week called Talking Buster Keaton. It's not the most in-depth thing in the world but its fun and they've had some neat guests on there.

There was also an episode of Leonard Maltin's podcast with someone from the Buster Keaton society that was really great - he has great talks with off beat people sometimes, when he's not overly praising current Hollywood stars.

It seems my recollection about full price for that collection was way, way, way off. But anyway, many thanks for the suggestions; I may look around to see if I can pick off a few individually beyond those I already have, and I hadn’t thought about potential quality differences in the masters or heard of filmstruck before.

But The Darjeeling Limited is often criticized even by people who like Anderson. Not me, I put it up there on the second tier right below Grand Budapest and Moonrise Kingdom. I love the setting though.

The only criticism I could level at it is that it feels like more of Anderson's style over substance, but I like his style enough to where that doesn't bother me. True it's not as good as The Royal Tenenbaums or Moonrise Kingdom, but not every work can be paired too much against his best stuff. I suppose I'm just eagerly awaiting Grand Budapest Hotel's inevitable release.

I'd say check out Grand Budapest Hotel, and if that still does nothing for you then Anderson just isn't your guy. I consider Royal Tenebaums to be a very good movie, but I don't enjoy it nearly as much as some of the others because it's mostly just emotional abuse stacked on to more emotional abuse for the entire movie. Moonrise Kingdom actually makes you feel good when you watch it. And Grand Budapest is just a masterpiece all around. Basebf555 fucked around with this message at 18:02 on Feb 13, 2018 |

Moonrise Kingdom is probably the most accessible of Wes Anderson's work, since the quirkiness sorta fits a youthful adventure thing and gives it more of a storybook feeling. It also works in Grand Budapest Hotel, since the entire story is about fondly remembering the past, which sets itself up for a less than realistic approach, except the film underuses Saoirse Ronan and that's an awful waste.
