Well the stick works great, now I just have to get into what seems like a nigh-impenetrable game. The last 4 pages of this thread honestly seem like they might as well be in another language.

I've just been taking courier/delivery jobs in the starting ship but the amounts of credits I'm earning make everything seem so loving expensive and I'm not sure what I should be saving for.

Courier and delivery jobs initially pay gently caress all but if you do jobs for the same faction long enough to rise in faction standing, they start paying better. If you want to be extra clever, try and pick a rich, heavily populated high-tech or industrial system as your 'base of operations', those have the best variety of ships and equipment available and tend to generate more lucrative jobs. LTT 15574 is a decent spot to start out, it's only a couple of jumps from the starting system and has some RESes to do some freerange bounty hunting in if that's your thing.

Mission rewards also scale based on your pilot ranking, which comes in three flavors:

Combat ranking: Raised by turning in bounties and combat bonds, along with completing combat missions.
Trade ranking: Raised by making profit on the commodity market, along with completing courier and delivery missions.
Exploration ranking: Raised by turning in exploration data to Universal Cartographics, along with completing salvage missions.

As for the ships you'll initially want to start working towards, you have a few options:

Eagle: 44,800 CR. The single cheapest ship in the game (barring the Sidewinder). An incredibly nimble light fighter, extremely fun to fly. Superior to the Sidewinder in nearly every way. If you think you'd enjoy bounty hunting, blowing things up, and generally being an infuriating little gnat, try this one.

Hauler: 52,720 CR. The space breadvan. It's not particularly fast, but it's cheap, has an expansive cargo bay for something its size, and has the firepower of half a Sidewinder. If you like making money via trading or making those bigger delivery missions, the Hauler is a decent cheap first choice, but..

Adder: 87,810 CR. The Hauler's bigger brother. The Adder is more expensive than the Hauler, but makes up for the increased price tag in flexibility; not only does it have a slightly larger cargo potential and better jump range, but it's also surprisingly nimble for its looks and carries some pretty big guns. It's still a great beginner for trading and it can be configured to do a little bit of everything depending on your particular needs. It's basically what the Sidewinder tries to be.

Imperial Eagle: 110,830 CR. This one takes a little more work, seeing as it's only sold in Imperial stations - it's essentially an Eagle with upgraded weapons and power systems, along with the thruster array reconfigured towards more straightline speed and acceleration than agility. Still a fun and relatively cheap light fighter with a surprising bite for something its size, albeit pretty fragile.

After these 'entry-level- ships, the Viper-3 and Cobra-3 make for great ships to aim for - the Viper is a fast and fun heavy fighter, the Cobra more of a flexible multipurpose ship. By the time you've saved enough money for them, you've probably got a decent handle on what you're looking for in a ship.

Note that unlike many games, you get the full price of a thing back when you sell it. Don't be afraid to experiment with ships and loadouts - nor to upgrade your current ride while you're working your way towards a new one.

Your first priorities when tweaking your ship should probably be the power distributor (it tends to be the cheapest thing on your ship yet makes literally everything better) and FSD (for ease of travel), followed by your shields, weapons and thrusters, the precise order depending on your preferences. Upgrade your power generator to keep up with demand, and don't worry overmuch about your life support or sensors. Try aiming for D- or C-rated core equipment first - those are still reasonably cost-efficient, while B- and A-grade equipment, while powerful, is dramatically more expensive. Start saving up for those when you've settled on a ship you'll be using for longer.

The goon faction. They are very friendly, very helpful and is an easy way into some of the multiplayer content, which is soon to be hopefully getting a revamp for the better. For some quick fun and profit you can ask to ride along as a fighter pilot on one of the bigger ships, or they'll let you know what to do if you want to spend your time fighting, exploring, or trading or mining. Maybe you want to do smuggling? Loads of activities.

You just need to find a station with a Shipyard. Most big stations have them; the kind that you can fly inside of, rather than land on top of. On the System Map, they'll appear as square-ish or round logos, with a dash in the middle. While you're in the System Map, might as well double check and make sure your prospective destination has "Shipyard" listed under facilities (if it's a typical large station, it probably will).

Once you've landed, Shipyard will be listed under Ship Services, just below Outfitting.

Happy to help! Elite is kind of infamous for doing the sandbox thing where you get dumped in the big playground and are expected to sort of muddle your way through.

To use the former example, Haxel Port in LTT 15574 is a full-on station instead of those bunch-of-modules-welded-together outposts. You can tell the difference in your navigation panel - outposts have a symbol that looks sort of like a satellite with antennas on it, stations have a diamond-inside-a-square symbol on it (it's supposed to look like a Coriolis station).

If you have Horizons, planetary outposts that don't have docking facilities have two small buildings on their navigation marker, ones that you can actually dock at have a third tower added in the back.

Edit: Another little thing they don't tell you but makes things easier, stations always have their 'mailslot' - the entry to the docking cavity - on the face that's rotating counterclockwise. Picture you're grabbing the station with your right hand so that your fingers wrap around it along the direction of the rotation, the docking bay is where your thumb is.

Missions don't have rank requirements, though they used to. Rank for missions is more suggested and basically tells difficulty and/or payout.

Absolutely join regardless of how much you think you'll actually play. The DIscord is a great source of advice and partners for various activities, along generally putting you in touch with a heap of useful data in the form of our pet AI.

Besides, it's wonderful motivation to actually get around to playing, whether it's fleet objectives, people to try different things with, or just weird ideas, ranging from 'please go to this system and do X' to just 'if you want to do trading, please do it in this system, it'll help us while you make money'.

Also, for the record, newbie questions and advice are a very welcome change to the pre-patch jitters and general bitching about Frontier's latest exploits. Keep 'em coming!

Edit: A handful of missions are locked behind player rank, but most of the time the suggested rank is just a measure of how challenging a mission will be. Doing missions over your rank will IIRC get you bonus rep/rank/credits. Be aware that some noncombat missions like courier/delivery/salvage runs will spawn NPCs trying to ambush you, and higher-rank missions will generally spawn nastier pirates after your poo poo.

Also, friendly hint. You know how some missions give you commodities as rewards, stuff like micro-weave cooling hoses etc? Generally you'll want to sell those ASAP. Having those in your hold will attract pirates very much willing to kamikaze you for your poo poo. (Once you start engineering, you'll want to keep an eye for Modular Terminals, but when you're starting out it's essentially extra income).

So I finally picked this up on the last steam sale. I dabble in astronomy so space types games are always a draw for me. I just started playing it in the last few days and it's been pretty fun trying to figure this stuff out.

Exploring has been interesting seeing stuff, but I'm not really clear on how I make money doing it. Trading seems to be pointless without a huge hauler so I've skipped that. I've been doing these courier/data mission and now have a cobra 3 or something that is kind of nice. The only thing I don't like about these missions is some times they send me a message saying "oh gently caress we need the data now I'll give you 80,000 credits extra" and then I check the time and it's like "you have 1 minute to deliver" and there is no loving way you can make it that fast :/

I don't have a hotas setup at the moment and I suspect that is probably the cause of my biggest issues which is combat related. It seems most times when I do a little SRV mission thing I'll end up getting bounties for the sentry done because they are illegal or whatever but then I get a bounty on me for trespassing and the federal no fun police or whatever then blow me up right when I take off again.

I keep seeing the political stuff and I can't make heads or tails of it yet -- does any of this matter in the grand scheme of things?

I don't have a hotas setup at the moment and I suspect that is probably the cause of my biggest issues which is combat related. It seems most times when I do a little SRV mission thing I'll end up getting bounties for the sentry done because they are illegal or whatever but then I get a bounty on me for trespassing and the federal no fun police or whatever then blow me up right when I take off again.

I keep seeing the political stuff and I can't make heads or tails of it yet -- does any of this matter in the grand scheme of things?

Making money exploring is a pretty simple affair that consists of two required components and optional stuff for how far out you want to go.
The first item required is the Advanced Discovery Scanner, this device takes a few seconds to charge before revealing the basic orbits and details of every stellar body in the system and gives you the bare minimum reward.
The second item is called the Detailed Surface Scanner, this device allows you to scan stellar bodies you are pointing at that are within range to reveal all of the specific information of that body. Things like mineral content, rotational period, temperature, etc. are all here and give you the maximum money available. Should note the range of the DSS is drastically affected by the size of the body you are pointing at and tiny moons/barely planets are almost never worth the time it takes flying close enough for scanning.
With these two in hand you grab a ship with a fuel scoop and set off into the unknown looking for high value targets - usually waterworlds and terraformable planets with a sprinkling of other large body worlds.

Trading for money almost entirely relies on rare commodity circuits and needs a pretty decent amount of space.

Courier/Data are the most efficient ways to build reputation with factions and can be decent money at the high end. Useful for stacking deliveries to the same station if you have a decent spot. The bonuses are rarely worth pushing for.

Combat flying is a bit trickier in that you'll want to learn how and when to toggle Flight-Assist off and keeping speed regulated for maximum maneuverability. Turning FA off allows you to pull significantly tighter turns at the expense of drift and having to be more aware of current movement against where the ship is pointed while speed regulation is important because too high or low a speed will negatively influence the maneuverability of the ship itself. Unless you're needing to get somewhere quickly you should try and stay decently within the marked off area on the speed bar - usually towards the middle - during combat so as to help stay behind enemies.

The SRV missions are just bollocks and always a pain so eh.

The political stuff is linked to the Background Simulation which controls mission availability, faction control, prices, rewards, trading, etc and is quite deep and complex. hth.

Thanks for that. Going to skip the silly SRV stuff for now then since it seems to take forever to do and is a pain.

Other questions:

1) How do I "fix" my mail window?" I am continually getting overlapping mails and it's all garbled up. If I delete them all I can still see ghost threads.

2) Is there any way to speed up the mission board? It takes like 15 seconds to open and is slow as gently caress.

It doesn't help that I'm fat as fuck, so my face shouldn't be shown off in the first place.
From my own experience the mail window only breaks when you get too many nested mission texts and can best be avoided by purging it regularly. Why this bug hasn't been fixed is anyone's guess.

Are you running the game on an SSD? Never had the board take more than a few seconds even at peak busy server times. No idea what else could cause it.

Farewell, good Hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.

The ships in this game have always sort of had a sense of scale problem without VR, like, sit inside an anaconda or imperial clipper and it is hard to appreciate or internalize just how large of an area you are sitting in. But the Python bridge is hands down the best bridge there is in this game. For one, the visual references tell you exactly how large it is, and from chair to chair it is nearly the same size as my couch, or of the inside of my uncle’s Winnebago. Which means when I am sitting on the left side of my couch and playing this game for hours and I glance over across to the other side it just feels right. It makes long treks into the void feel like camping trips, or that time my uncle drove me to Wyoming without telling my mom. For instance:

For another, it has a badass old rough feel to it that works well in this game. Much nicer than the Gutamediocre shipyard production efforts. It even has a cubby in the center console for food snacks or rope.

I have only found three neutron stars in all of the Orion/Bernard’s loop area, and no black holes, which has been kind of a let down.

However, today I stumbled upon a system in the center of the Orion Nebula that had a registered form of government. So I went. And of course, there is literally a tourist trap 5000ly from the bubble.

I bought a t-shirt and sent my mom a postcard.

Is it okay to join up if I'm a fairly casual gamer who has add tendencies? I get really into a game hard for a couple months and then drop it for a while before jumping back in. I'm also a gaming omnivore so I pretty much always want to play anything that comes out regardless of genre as long as it's good, so I get distracted by all kinds of poo poo.

If it's helpful to just be a dude who logs in and does missions for our faction or whatever I'm definitely on board with that.

Late, but yeah

Join up and do as little or as much as you want. "Casual gamer who has add tendencies" describes most of the frogs in general.

this.

In fact, I haven't done a loving thing that resembles "work" for the frogs since the emblem cg because I don't have the energy to even start the game up at the mo'. For new players joining the frogs is a pro move and will give you something to do once the game stops having interesting goals for you. Plus, they are hella good guys. Except FrogBear, watch the gently caress out for that guy.

It's currently running from my SAN off a raid 10 LUN. Everything loads pretty fast but that mission window just takes forever to come up. Pretty sure it is a server call -- maybe its slow cause I'm in the starting area?

Where is that last one? Tannhauser gate? Those are gorgeous. I’m only taking mine on the Xbox and touching them up but I can only imagine what they’d be off of a PC with mods and such.

Up in Barnard's Loop, the only blue small nebula in there. I took these when I was skipping across the galaxy at impossible distances because I wanted to get pictures of all the nebula in the galaxy. I have an imgur gallery here and all the pictures of nebula being far away were as close as I could get to it. Since I could skip whereever I wanted I could try to get the best angles but there simply weren't any stars close enough to warp to. I heard later that a lot of these systems ended up being permit-restricted which always weirded me out. Certainly someone would someone would have flash their ship's BIOS in order to jump to systems where software was blocking them :v:

This is a unique nebula (you'd be surprised at how often nebula are copy/pasted across the galaxy, like that double-bubble purple one) that you couldn't get any closer to. A shame too because those colors are very grandma.
