Well, at the very least, you need them to have less inherent worth than their face value. Otherwise nobody would use coins for currency, but instead sell whatever they're made out of. More or less why nobody uses gold coins any more. Of course, the other main feature you want in currency is for them to be easy to transport and trade, while bitcoins are totally infeasible to use.

Also there needs to be a guarantor of worth behind a currency. Bitcoin is absolutely worthless since it can be infinitely speculated up and down.
