It seems that the moment a series introduces rape into its story, that series turns to poo poo. Or am I overgeneralizing?

It's a very difficult thing to incorporate into your story with the appropriate amount of sensitivity and it turns out that being a male author whose claim to fame is romanticizing street fights doesn't really qualify you for saying anything meaningful and appropriate about sexual assault

It really depends on how the series is written following it. Some can pull it off, like Berserk, but most can not.

What about when a series opens with attempted rape? The Killing Bites manga did, though the would-be rapists got brutally murdered for their attempt, and then what was translated at the time became Bloody Roar:The Manga.

Finally got round to reading a couple of seinen staples.

Liar Game is a lot of fun and I like the art. I know it's pretty limited in terms of characterisation and themes, but I find it really moreish.

Gantz is bad - got maybe 4 chapters in before stopping. I should've known better. Inuyashiki was a lot more interesting (still not great though).

Gantz was good when it was the early fights against super strong aliens and the cast was a revolving door. But it also had completely needless attempted rape and actual rape.

that opening bit of Killing Bites comes and goes quickly enough but in the anime they now have this cobra therianthrope who is a huge piece of poo poo that strings up the women he fights and talks constantly about wanting to rape them, and he's scheduled to stick around for a second episode this week. the only positive is he's going to be brutally destroyed by honey badger.

Regarding Suicide Island/Holyland guy, it's so obvious that the author has this super romanticized idea of how a True Man lives, and that it consists of being a manly nerd who Lives Off The Land and Cares For His* Woman, plus some Japanese nationalism thrown into the mix.

*emphasis on the "basically owning the woman" part; Suicide Island's relationship between the protagonist and his PTSD girlfriend is all kinds of condescending and doesn't even attempt to portray it as anything other than the protagonist essentially rescuing the girl

Punkin Spunkin posted:

It seems like "I'll half kill you" was my Tokyo ghoul peak, but I still think those initial first chapters advertise a less dumb series than what we got and I was rarely interested in most of the ghoul hunting cop characters
It's sad how quickly I got tired and over with both Destroy and Revolution and Suicide Island too. I'm almost afraid to revisit Holyland.

I actually enjoyed Tokyo Ghoul, including Re: after a kind of slow start. It's hard to explain exactly why, since a lot of the criticism people give is completely accurate. It doesn't give me quite the "nerd trying to be serious and hardcore" feeling as the Suicide Island/Holyland author, and the art is kind of neat. I think the main thing I like about it is that the setting is pretty well realized and it does a decent job of maintaining a certain kind of tone.

The one really absurd thing is the power creep, though. They end up introducing these ghouls who are absurdly powerful relative to other ghouls, often for unclear reasons. The strength of the Clowns in general is really weird and doesn't make much sense. The best explanation I can think of is "being a cannibal as a ghoul makes you both really loving strong and really loving crazy, which naturally results in an organization of really loving strong + crazy ghouls forming."

edit: regarding Kaneki, I actually liked what Re: did for his character. He was getting kind of boring later into the original series, and having him meet and be influenced by these other characters worked pretty well (and I liked a couple of them, like the guy with a stick up his rear end and the guy who died).

Also Touka didn't get to do jack poo poo the whole loving manga after being introduced as badass and that was really hosed up, imo, and I won't even forgive it if it turns out she owns in :RE or whatever

What ends up happening with (spoilers for Re:)Touka is immensely lame, even if it sort of makes sense in terms of character growth. She basically becomes really nice and friendly and later into Re: when Kaneki comes back she's like "let's bang" and he's like "okay"* and then they bang for a chapter (I have to give that chapter credit for being a lot more fan-service-y regarding Kaneki than it was Touka - apparently Kaneki has a lot of female fans and that scene was obviously written with appealing to them in mind). Touka then ends up pregnant and makes herself sick eating human food because the baby (who is half-human) needs it. She keeps this a secret from Kaneki for some reason.

She does get to do some fighting later, at least.

*I'm not exaggerating much here. She basically says "I noticed how were you checking me out when you visited the cafe" and he goes "uh, um, uh" and then she goes "I wuz checkin you out too ;)" and then just asks if he wants to gently caress IIRC

I forget the details, but isn't this similar to what happened with the Owl? He was a ghoul and hooked up with a human woman, and they had Eto. Then again Eto seemed to have the dietary habits of a regular ghoul, so not sure what's up with that. Maybe ghoul status is determined by the father? All I know is that Touka was eating hamburgers and struggling to keep them down to feed the baby.

I believe this is original Tokyo Ghoul, because Hinami is still young (Re: skips forward a couple years or so, and Hinami looks significantly older in it).

Tokyo Ghoul's translation might suffer from being somewhat old, back when scanlations were less consistent.

Half-ghoul children would either not be conceived in the first place, or die because either their human mother would not eat human flesh, or their ghoul mother would not keep down human food. Owl's wife decided to "do everything it took" to have their child, with all the dietary implications that carried.

This makes me think that it's dependent upon the father, and Touka basically had to do the reverse of what Eto's mother did.

(Also I think half-ghoul children being conceived is the sort of thing that is very uncommon but can happen as a "miracle." I guess you could also argue that Kaneki being a half-ghoul somehow made it more feasible than it would otherwise be, but not sure how that meshes with the baby needing human food.)

IIRC an ultra-rich guy wanted to be immortal so he developed memory copying tech and genetically engineered super smart clones, I'm hazy on this part but I think a clone or clones woke up and escaped with the technology and decided to improve the world through murder.

The akumetsu masks were miniaturized versions of the mind transfer machine that would copy and upload the memories of suiciding clones the moment before they died.
