Phanatic posted:Yeah. Exactly my point. There's nothing about the government being a guarantor that prevents a currency from being speculated infinitely up and down. I mean, countries have chosen in the past to literally hyperinflate their currencies in order to pay off debt. Big-name economists like Krugman have advocated that the US should engage in massive inflationary policy in order to pay down its debts. At the time of its issuance, this was worth about $30 USD and is also a funny picture: Dumb? Drew would like to have a word with you.

Aramoro posted:Its not that uncommon for kids to dress up like that for a school project learning about the war. So when these companies scrape the search terms for costumes it will probably come up. When we had our bicentennial in Australia, our entire school had a convict dress up day. It didn’t seem strange for children to be dressing as convicted criminals dumped on a foreign continent.

Collateral Damage posted:Sweden, the year 1650 Thats pretty interesting, never saw that before. The Laconians (Spartans) in the archaic and classical period used heavy iron skewers as their currency. It had little inherent value, it's believed that part of the reasoning was to make transfers of wealth (and underhanded things like bribes) difficult and cumbersome. When the Greeks adopted coinage, the standard coin or obol takes its name from these skewers. In the South Pacific, the people of Yap used giant stones for currency that make the daler look downright convenient. The largest known weighs 4 tons. Because they are so difficult to move, trading them is largely based on agreeing that ownership has transferred and leaving it where it is.

It's a totally normal thing in the UK (see how the price is in pounds not dollars) where hundreds of thousands of children were sent to live in the country during the worst of the bombing during the war. It's still being traded on the bottom of the sea, because at least people know where it is.

I mean, I very rarely use cash these days, but instead exchange money by pressing a piece of plastic to a lump of metal and glass until it beeps, which means my number goes down and someone else's number goes up, but no physical copper, spears or giant stones has changed hands.
