You're gonna have to try a little harder than THAT.

I mainly play on 32 person servers so I'm sure that has something to do with it.

I think kaptain has a few other great clips interspersed with stock RL gameplay in other videos but here's a play:

I used to always assume when I saw someone do good in an FPS that they're almost certainly just quite good. Now I always check the steam profile and if it's private or <500 hours at the very least I just assume they're cheating, sadly.

I'd imagine people who play cs:go have similar mindsets.

i was like this for like the first 2 years i played csgo, until I installed the steam vac checker. After the initial shock I went back a bit to the initial mentality because, realistically, despite logging like 40 banned players, over a couple years that's not *that* much.

i heard that some big youtube guys wanted to host servers ad free and poo poo to relive the old days but it failed miserably. theres just no audience for it, because valve makes accessing servers simple (not necessarily good).

getting a bit nostalgic about old community servers, and I imagine I'm not alone, but the game is what it is now, and I don't think that will ever happen again, and even if it were to go back to that, that it'd work at all. Times are a changing, i guess

Kicking community servers out of quick play pretty much killed them. Without that steady stream of players to keep a server filled, there's no way to keep regulars coming back. That's also probably killed custom maps, since there's no way to play them. The only reason to make a custom map is to try and get it included in an official update, because definitely no-one's going to play it otherwise.

The only non-official servers that get players these days are either surf/jump servers or competition-related.

Contrary to popular belief, community servers were killed when quick-play was added. That was the needle in the spine; keeping them fed via that same quickplay was just life support.

As soon as a randomizer replaced the favorites menu as the most efficient way for players to connect, the "community" aspect of community servers stopped being automatically fed, instead requiring a continuous struggle to maintain. Some legacies lasted longer than others, but nothing new could grow.

Don't forget, most community servers were loving terrible and you had to search through a dozen with forced ads and awful paid bonuses before you could find one decent one, and then everyone on the 'decent' server would probably have furry porn sprays.

Yeah lets not kid ourselves poo poo like pinion was prevalent. but personally I didnt encounter many of those, and when most servers were pretty full, they would sustain with slot reservation.

Which is why it was a good thing when Valve started quickplay and started booting out the really lovely pay-to-win and horrific advertising servers. I mean yeah it sucked that you couldn't really get a nocrit server going any more, but the general pattern of "play a round of upward or badwater whenever player count drops too low, before moving back to whatever fun map people vote for" was pretty reasonable for sustaining the "good" community servers.

Then it all just died when quickplay was cut back to official servers only.

Yep, this. Honestly, I never had a regular server I visited often. I just searched for a map and ping then joined the first one with a decent number of players.

You had to have all kinds of poo poo like editing your HOSTS file if you wanted to play on community servers.

I agree with the community servers committed suicide stance. I remember clearly when they first added it how 8/10 servers had forced ads. A lot of the bigger communities avoided it and they still have decent numbers today. Hell, skail for all of its BS still fills up pretty consistently if you’re looking for a specific map.

Those ad servers fed off the quickplay traffic. Back when everyone connected manually, there was enough of a discerning playerbase to keep true community servers alive -- they were subsumed by the lovely ones once actually choosing your servers became a niche activity, and word-of-mouth "hey ducksoup gaming is a good channel, try that one" stopped.

To put it another way: good community servers were killed by the bad ones when quickplay was created, the bad ones were mercy-killed when quick-play stopped feeding them.

That's what I always remembered, being able to filter down servers in the browser and pick one that looked good. After a while I'd have a decently populated favorites list, even if the blacklist was a mile long.

So I launched the game after a long time, and for some reason I can't access Competitive Matchmaking anymore, because I don't have a pass. It says premium account + phone number should suffice, but it clearly doesn't.

Also, Casual matchmaking says "Queued for casual" and then does nothing.

Did they accidentally destroy this game in a recent patch?

dont know about competitive, but when you queue for casual it DOES work, just not immediately. while you wait you can play on other servers, tab out and do something else (the game will play a sound and light up in your taskbar when it finds a game) or just go afk for a moment (it automatically connects you when it finds a game)
