Hey, this is Freep: if your last name ends in a vowel or a -z, Inspector Dipshit is on the case. For those of us who don't live in towns of <5,000 or view everything through a pre-1960 filter, it looks pretty drat absurd. White guy outside perspective here, but the US has a *highly* assimilative culture. It was really fascinating in the military to see all the cultural mix, and it really stood out that Hispanics whose families had been in the US more than a generation or two were pretty dang different from recent immigrants. One of my sergeants was commenting on that, about how weird it was being around "real Mexicans" when he viewed himself as technically Mexican by descent, but spoke zero Spanish and was into heavy metal. If the US worked like Freep thinks it does, you'd still be afraid to go into certain parts of town because they were full of Gaelic-speaking Irish-American Catholics that refused to mix with outsiders, or would be slowed up at the DMV because some fourth-generation Polish-American person's family hadn't bothered to learn English over the last century. And we'd have strict scrutiny of German-Americans in the military because some guy whose family came over in 1873 from Prussia would be seen as highly likely to hand US secrets over to Berlin. If we let in Syrian refugees with toddlers, odds are their kids are going to grow up listening to Beyonce or Mastodon, going to college and partying, and a very good chance of marrying someone outside their community. And then *their* kids will largely think of "being Syrian" as getting dragged to some festival at their grandparents' mosque a couple times a year, having to wear weird "traditional" outfits for the day and listen to Arabic they barely understand, but get to eat some kickass food. As much as the American dialogue has really downplayed "melting pot" over "diverse tapestry" or whatever, American culture tends to blend a lot of stuff together pretty quick, and hanging on to your family language past one generation takes actual serious effort, despite Freep fantasies that Somali kids are somehow going to go to school and refuse to learn English for some dumb reason.

Mildly related: I saw a story linked on FB the other day, presumably from someone in Southern California. They went to the ER, but were shocked to find that it was "full of illegal immigrants" who "were getting their healthcare for free" (as explained to them by a fellow ER patient). Then they were further shocked when the triage nurses wouldn't let them cut in line when they offered to "pay cash." Let me translate this into how a normal person would describe this situation: They went to the ER, which was busy, and many of the patients were hispanic. Also, the triage nurse wouldn't let them bribe her because holy poo poo why would they do that. And finally, anyone can go to the ER for "free" healthcare (as in, they don't make you pay before treatment). That was literally used as a right-wing talking point during the ACA negotiations: "We don't need to improve healthcare, anyone can get treated at the ER." People see what they want, and for these folks, ethnic minority = dangerous other.
