One thing living in Japan does is cement the fact that ignoring the opinions of others is a perfectly valid life strategy.

Electricb7 posted:

Or are there more factors than just finding the right usb-c pcie card?

That last one. The pci-e card, video card, and system board apparently all need to agree, unless the video card has a USB-C port.

Most system board USB-C ports will only do video if the integrated video is enabled, and those ports don't benefit from graphics cards.

Basically, it's a huge mess still.

When I turn on my cintiq I get an error message that says "there's no disk in drive" (translated from Spanish). It's not really a big deal, just annoying.
Does anybody know what that could be?

Also: Is there any way to turn touchscreen off by default?

Ok so after researching and leaning new tech lingo I think I figured this out but I need someone to confirm if I'm adding this up correctly.

I need a USB-C pcie card that also supports Display Port Alternate mode. Alternate Mode is a way for video signals to be transferred through a usb-c cable. So basically a standard usb pci card wont do. You need one that supports Display Port Alternate mode and I think I found one.

'SUNIX UPD2018'

After hours of searching I found people (like 3 people) that claim this works pretty easily.

I'm going to wait until I buy a Cintiq pro 16 next week and give hands on impressions if this works....Or should I wait for the Cintiq pro 24. Dun DUN DUUUUUUN!

The cintiq pro 16 went back from $1300 to $1500. Cant win

Trip report:

In love with my Surface Book 2. No complaints except having to buy the pen separately. Except for that it is amazing. Battery life is really impressive, mostly because it seems to scale so well between 1-4ghz depending on demand. Doodling in zbrush on the screen and seeing the CPU rarely get past 1.8ghz was awesome. Keyshot is the only thing which comes close to maxing it out.

Weird quirk is resolution. Older apps look terrible due to ridiculously high res (4k) so I have to keep switching between resolutions depending on what I am doing. Minor thing though because the screen is gorgeous and I really can do almost anything on it with no noticeable lag.

Still trying to figure out the best way to use it though. Tablet mode blocks the keys and makes it hard to use zbrush or any painting program due to lack of shortcuts.

Is there a vertical mouse with programmable buttons? Or a wireless hand keypad / gameboard you guys recommend? (The logitech G13 is too much money / features and not wireless.)

I had the same issues with my SB1. Eventually I just settled on leaving the screen attached unless I was exclusively drawing. The Dial has looked enticing though.

For problem programs, go to Properties > Compatibility, click 'override scaling' and set it to one of the System options. That should force the program to display at the correct scaling; it will likely still be grainy, but if your current solution is to change the screen res then that won't make a difference anyway.

Use Tablet Pro. It is the best solution I could find but yeah... they need a better solution to tablet keyboard controls. That was the only major problem I had with the SB2 and why I returned it.

I've been using a Nintendo Switch Joycon controller paired via bluetooth and JoyToKey to map shortcuts to on my Surface Pro 4. Works like a charm and is doubly convenient since I already own a Switch. Someone made a simple tutorial if you want to check it out.

I dug out my H610 Pro, and was pleasantly surprised to find that I can actually draw confidently with it now. Let this be a lesson not to jump into digital before you're ready; it seriously put me off drawing for a while because it just didn't feel right in my hands.

Then I spent an hour trying to decipher a two minute tutorial on layer masks, because Ctrl+Click on a layer does different things depending on whether you click the thumbnail or the layer name. :eng99: I am laughably bad at this; sometimes I see process vids where people have mountains of layers, and I consistently draw on the wrong layer as soon as I have more than one.

What made you ready for digital? Drawing with pencils? Learning to use the software?

Just traditional sketching, generally getting more confident, nothing more than that really. I made an attempt with my Surface and didn't take to that much either, which actually helped, because going back to the size, clarity and accuracy of an external monitor coupled with a regular drawing tablet really enamored me to the Huion.

I picked up a Huion 221Pro last week and have been enjoying the hell out of it.

I wanted to see, however, if anyone else had a similar issue with their tablet monitor on a mac system.

I have a late 2012 iMac (latest drivers and OS), and it keeps ignoring the external monitor of the Huion. There's obviously an issue, as sometimes the main monitor will go into a blink:on blink:off cycle that won't stop unless you unplug the external monitor from the DisplayPort. But mainly the issue is that unless I reboot (sometimes a couple times) the iMac doesn't even see the Huion. Using the "detect displays" button in the system settings doesn't even see it.
Just wanted to see if anyone else using a mac had a similar issue and had found a fix.

Anyone else having problem making their surface book actually work with pressure sensitivity in photoshop? I feel like this is a driver issue or some kind of windows setting.

Weird that it works fine in autodesk sketchbook and zbrush but not photoshop.

Finding and installing old drivers fixed the issue, if I remember correctly yes, it was for Wintab. I found the installer for Wintab-1.0.0.18-64-bit, you can try searching for that.

Yup it worked.
My Cintiq pro 16 works completely fine when I installed the Sunix USB 3.1 Dual Port USB-C PCI card.

Also Wacom is full of crap. The usb c cable that comes with the tablet is 3 feet long. How am I supposed to stretch that thing to my PC? I guess they only though of Mac users because they either use Mac books or the all in one things that sit in front of you? The power cable has two parts to it and both ends are miles long. And on top of that you cant find usb-C 3.1 gen-2 cables that are longer than 3 feet. So I was forced to buy an 3.1 gen-2 extender with an extra cable just to have 1 long cable that reaches the back of my PC. Thanks Wacom!

If you have any questions I will be happy to answer. The extra cords, docks and dongles you see on youtube reviews is just too much.

Should probably just upgrade to CC - been putting it off because I despise cloud based software.

I would do a trial to make sure the sensitivity works before throwing money at a software upgrade, cloud based software is a horrible idea. It's super annoying when the software you paid for won't run because your internet went down.

I fundamentally do not like the model. If I've paid for the software, I should be able to use it any time I want once it's installed, without having to check the internet. But more importantly, there are cases with my laptop where I'm working either without a network or behind a strict firewall, or I haven't used it in a month. And if I'm lecturing I do not have time to run a license check, I need the software to work immediately, not in 1 minute, not in 5 minutes, not next time I get near a network, I need it that moment. So personally I avoid that poo poo as much as possible because while most of the time it works, that one moment of inconvenience happens to be a burden too great, and I'm not interested in getting burned again.

I understand you don't need to be connected to the internet to use CC, but does it do periodic license checks, and shut you out if enough checks fail?

I second this about the CC stuff. Obnoxious.

If you buy software, you should own it - not rent it.

Free version of tablet pro doesn't allow me to activate the toggle function for the keystrokes. Wat? So I can't hold the virtual shift button down with my finger? Hmm. Screw it. I'm fine with renting it. When it wasn't subscription based it was way to expensive. Being a kid and wanting to get into digital art that was definitely a barrier. And I think that was just for 1 program like Photoshop.
Also the monthly check in is completely fine. Its seriously no hassle.

Its affordable, my brushes and prefs move with me between my studio computer, my laptop, my home computer and any in-house workstation I'm saddled with, and did you know that the subscription comes with your own adobe based squarespace-type portfolio? It's pretty sweet. CC and studio rent are pretty much my only business overheads so, hooray, it even gives me the chance to use my company credit card.

The online/offline thing didn't bother me even when I used it while backpacking for 3 months. I just...didn't update the software. At one point after a certain amount of time I think it just asked me to plug in my password.

Does anybody use a tablet stand? I have a (I think) medium-sized Intuous tablet.

I've been thinking about getting one, because when drawing with pencil I use a board to have page level with my eyes, which isn't really necessary when drawing with a tablet. But since my desk is a bit taller than my chair it seems like it would make drawing more comfortable and help me keep my wrist straight.

ok so maybe I lied when I said I got all this crap to work finally. This poo poo is bonkers.

edit- I'm just going to bite the bullet and use the stupid wacom link dongle. I honestly cant tell if its the Sunix card, or if the cables I got are actually gen 2 usb-c as described, or if they are faulty. Now I'm finding out that the cord length plays into the actual speed of the usb c cable? gently caress it all.

They need to clean this up. Even on the wacom site they offer the usb c cable (on 3 feet length) and they just call it a usb c cable. No speeds, no model or anything. Just any cable wont work on this drat tablet. They act like a dollar store cable will let you connect properly.

even more fun!!!
The Wacom link dongle requires Mini Display port! I have a 970 which isn't that old and it only has hdmi and regular Display port. So now I have to buy a cord or adapter. But wait there's EVEN MORE!
Wacom says you cant get 4k with using the adapter. They are wrong and there are Youtube reviewers who are proving them wrong. You just need the correct cable that allows 4k to pass through it. And connect the usb c (not the usb thats the AC adapter, but the one now connected to the wacom link... sigh) to the upper right port on the cintiq because only that one out of three usb-c ports offers 4k.

Thank God this guy on youtube tested it out and linked the cable he purchased.
