Mierenneuker posted:And the fellows who also save your life end up wanting to kill you. And you can save them at certain points in the game, but it might be better to just leave them for dead? Fun facts about that game: Originally Far Cry 2 was supposedly a much more complete game before they half assed it and pushed it out. It's no exaggeration to say that it probably would have been a Skyrim level hit if they had actually bothered to finish it instead of making a quick buck off of it. It might have even changed the way the open world shooter genre went. Supposedly there was an actual faction system in play that was never fully implemented. That's why the two big armies in the civil war both attack you for no reason even when you're working for them. Which might seem like a glitch or major bug until you realize that nope --- they just didn't give a poo poo. Either the devs or the publisher decided they didn't want to spend the time finishing the game and just went "Eh, gently caress it. After the original Far Cry's great reviews it'll sell. Ship it, add a bit to the ending about how man's fundamental inhumanity and lack of morals to justify the bullshit and ending, and we'll put a ban on release day reviews.". It's also why the companions were there despite serving no real purpose and also why the plot makes no sense at all. The companions were supposed to actually be existent in the game world (And were partially randomly generated on each play through.) and could be recruited to fight with you. The original pitch for the game was basically a gritty Mercenary-meets-Skyrim-meets-Soldier-of-Fortune-open-world pitch and they just half-assed all of it and eventually settled on something similar but more refined for the sequels. I learned all this when talking to a guy who tried to figure out how to mod that loving mess to make something decent and discovered that some of the code is evidently still in there. He eventually gave up and moved on to modding for other games since barely anyone even bothered with that garbage fire after a few years. Edit: I'm pretty sure the fire also randomly lodges metal and breaks your fingers too. So you can stand in a brush fire you lit and all of a sudden you just get magnetized to an insane level and start attracting bits and pieces of shrapnel and rebar that invisibly impale you. A few flubs slipped through the cracks into Oblivion. Most of these are just someone flubbing the line and immediately repeating it, but in the last one you can actually hear the voice actor requesting another take. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX8najPmiyc No Oblivion NPC has ever sounded more like an actual person.

Probably already posted but: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/ask-paradox-development-studio-anything.615174/page-98#post-19138242 Crusader Kings 2 dev in 2015 posted:In essence, more dead characters doesn't make game slower. More alive characters does. But what really hits performance are large empires because it increases the amounts of realms (every ruler technically holds his own sub-realm) meaning more evaluations per character has to be made. For instance I discovered late game that huge greek/byzantine empires were slowing down the game because each greek person was evaluating against each other person in the realm "can I castrate?", and this took up like a huge chunk of the performance of the AI. I hink 70% of the AI demands were about castrating or blinding someone when I loaded late-game byzantine saves. Luckily this is fixed in the coming 2.4 patch. A fun little anecdote.

dialhforhero posted:CK2 is a loving treasure to read about and I am ashamed of myself for having never played it. I always get wary of games that are story goldmines because what usually happens is the dedicated players can generate really good stories, but I cannot seem to do so with any regularity. In other words, fun to read about, but not so much fun to play till something noteworthy happens. A good example I remember is an old article style LP of... I think Galactic Civilizations II. The guy had this giant story laid out over the course of the article that talked about the politics going on in the background, and how there was all this awesome stuff happening around him, but when you consider it from his angle, and not "the game as a whole", it turns out he was doing jack-all the entire game and suddenly the AI was on the cusp of winning when he pulled just slightly ahead and won in a different way.

It's a lot like Dwarf Fortress or Space Station 13. Great stories and weird poo poo comes from them. But 99% of the time you pick up the game it's going to function perfectly normally and nothing funny will happen. They're fun games but kind of unremarkable most of the time. But the stories make them sound like the most radical things ever.
