What I'm getting at is...
Do you feel the same way?
Mostly anime. But I don't mind manga recommendations if you have something cool in mind. (everything by Urasawa is obviously great)

I already made a post with some so I'll drag it back out/update it a bit:

quote:

Route End
Due to a harsh experience in life, Haruno eventually becomes a cleaning specialist in the field of clearing the remnants of the deceased.
After a particular day, Haruno becomes involved in the curious case of 'END'.

-ongoing; main character is a civilian working w/police to catch a serial killer; I'm following this one and it's been pretty interesting so far, starting to get a bit weird

Shibatora
Officer Shibata Taketora works in a local koban (a small police office). He may have a child-like face on the outside, but he's more serious than anyone in his pursuit of justice! With his goal being to become a detective, Taketora confronts everyday problems that happen within the town! Various incidents within the street make him chase after and apprehend criminals!
-a must-read if you like cop manga

Switch
Etou Kai may look like a squeaky-clean kid, but the Greater Kanto Narcotics Control Division's new investigator hides a violent alter ego and a dangerous past.
With his stoic partner Kurabayashi Hal, Kai is assigned to track down and stop the distribution of Dragon Speed, a dangerous new drug. But Ryuugen, the syndicate trafficking the drug, is almost impossible to infiltrate. Add street violence and a jurisdiction war with the Meguro Police into the mix, and it looks like Kai's in for some very long days at the office.

-kinda meh tbh; it also has a short anime adaption; it's mostly interesting for being one of the few police procedural manga I've run across but it falls pretty low on my list and this is less a recommendation and more just "this is a thing that exists"

Himitsu
It's the 2060's, and Japan has perfected "The MRI System," a piece of neurotechnology that, when given the brain of a person who died within the past 48 hours, can analyse the visual memories contained within; even being able to give scientists a look into what the deceased saw in their final moments. Needless to say, this is a highly regarded - and greatly feared - method that has been placed under stringent restrictions and is only authorised for use by a special police unit, Section Nine, for the investigation of baffling or high-profile crimes.
Aoki Ikkou is a talented newbie who has just been assigned to Section Nine. He initially has qualms about delving into people's most private moments and analysing their darkest fears and fantasies, but as he settles in with his teammates and warms up to his boss, the highly intelligent Maki Tsuyoshi, he becomes more and more competent at his job.
Though quick to develop pride in his career, Aoki still struggles to balance his family relationships and love life with his demanding workload, further complicated when he's drawn into the dark past and murky circumstances surrounding the outwardly cool and self-controlled but internally tormented Maki.

-sci-fi but limited to the MRI thing; translation is ongoing & VERY slow but approx. 3/4 of it is translated; there's an anime adaption but having watched part of it you're probably better off just reading the manga

Border
On her first day as a police academy trainee, Haruna is assigned to keep an eye on Ishikawa Ango, a driven and resourceful detective who has recently survived a gunshot wound to the head. What Haruna doesn't know is that the incident has given Ishikawa the ability to see and communicate with spirits of the victims, making him even more determined to use his special ability to catch culprits.
-some supernatural elements since the guy sees ghosts but he has to work within the scope of his investigation so it's fairly grounded; ongoing but there are several full case arcs translated. This one reminds me a little of that tv show Touching Evil but with actual ghosts

To that I'll also add Summer of the Ubume which is a stand-alone murder mystery adaption of the novel of the same name. There is a whole series of these based on the novels; the second manga is still being translated (slowly) and also has an anime adaption that I can't really give opinions on since I haven't gotten around to watching it (but is probably better than waiting on the manga to be translated lol), and the third one is being worked on by the same group that finished the first one (e: just noticed they finished it!!). There's also a spinoff that is a little lighter, it's incomplete but finishes up a whole case so you aren't left hanging.

Have you read Master Keaton by Urasawa? It's more lighthearted and episodic than Monster, but it does have a detective feel (the protagonist is an insurance investigator/archaeologist).

Manhole by Tetsuya Tsutsui is pretty interesting as well. Detectives try to stop a pandemic. I'd like to read more stuff like this myself.

Route End by Kaiji Nakagawa is ongoing, but it might be worth following. The main character works as a cleaner specialising in sanitising homes where people have died. Won't say much else about it.

e: EB beat me to recommending Route End!

Nichijou - equal parts pastoral and frenetic. beautifully animated, heartwarming, and hilarious
Tsurezure Children - cute awkward romantic moments between various couples
Mitsuboshi Colors - cute brats terrorize a police officer
Yuru Yuri - everyone has an unrequited crush on each other
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid - i saved a wounded dragon, now she's my maid and we might be in lesbians

Slower and comfier:
Non Non Biyori - kids hanging out in beautiful rural japan
Flying Witch - witches hanging out in beautiful rural japan
Hidamari Sketch - friends in art school living in the same apartment building
Azumanga Daioh - one of the first "high school slice of life" shows and still a classic

Slice of life at work:
Shirobako - trials and tribulations of a struggling anime studio
New Game! - cute game developers making cute games

Slice of life after the apocalypse, still fun but also heavier:
Sound of the Sky - girls in a quiet military outpost finding hope a dying world
Girls' Last Tour - girls exploring and looking for meaning in a dead world

I just finished Nichijou and am somewhat annoyed I missed out on it for so long. It was a nice chill ride and genuinely funny. I've seen about half this list, so am looking forward to checking out the rest.

New Game! Was nice, I was hoping there was more, then stumbled across the fact there was a sequel. New Game!! I wish they'd stop naming sequel series with more punctuation. (Lookin' at you WWW.Working!!)

Haven't read the manga myself, but the anime definitely got weaker towards the end, though it was still enjoyable. That said, the first four or so episodes of ERASED are definitely worth watching nonetheless - really really well done stuff. Probably the strongest opening to anything I saw that year.

The manga has a weak ending IMO but apparently the anime screws it up even more. This is more of an indication of how strong it starts out than anything else.

Yeah, I agree - the ending isn't very good. Was just saying the beginning of the show at least was nonetheless excellent. Shame it had to go so downhill really - could've been a really amazing show and then ended up being just pretty decent as a whole thanks to the disappointing ending.

I thought the manga ended fine but the start/middle was definitely the high point of the story overall. I never watched the anime but the summary I read of how it ended seemed pretty lame.

Any good detective/crime series? Preferably with an overarching plot with a larger mystery. So more Stand Alone Complex than Conan (cause it doesn't end).

Gosick has some issues (it shuffles dates around in its WW2 setting for basically no reason, you have to be up for a 'boy hangs out with kind of precocious girl' story, some of the mysteries aren't great) but the relationship between the two leads is pretty well done all in all and the central mystery is good, plus some of the individual episodes are interesting twists. I still wish the entire show was animated in the style of the OP though.

Try watching Gamers! as well, it's quite an entertaining slice-of-life series.

And has one of the most spectacular comedy of errors situations I've ever seen :suspense:.

The bit in episode 6 where Keita planning to ask Karen out has no less than FOUR PEOPLE discreetly watching every other onlooker for their reactions for entirely unique reasons.

Gamers! is fun because it has nearly nothing to do with its stated premise and is instead just a show about goofy idiots coming up with convoluted secret schemes to try untangling their friend group's ridiculous love dodecahedron and only ever managing to make things worse for themselves and each other.

The first episode is pretty impressive, just for setting up as cliche a shonen school club setting as possible... and then just slamming all of it in right in the trash :allears:.

Just finished wrapping Gamers! up, I liked it! Thanks for the recommendation. I don't think anyone had the correct idea about what was actually going on the entire time, peak of it all being the spoilered scene mentioned. Fun to watch it all unfold, and yet it managed to not become insufferable after the 8th misunderstanding.

:yeah: I did! Definitely bumps up the quality of the whole series for me, actual character growth and realistic conflict! Fits in that somewhat rare genre of more realistic workplace anime, Servant x Service also being pretty solid IMO.

Also saw A Silent Voice last week and really enjoyed it. I haven't seen a lot of feature length stuff outside of Miyazaki or a spinoff of a series, and not that much drama in any form at all.
