I don't avoid stories with overpowered protagonists but it is a big warning flag. You can write a good story with an overpowered protagonist, even one so powerful that he's explicitly unbeatable (i.e. one punch man, arguably kumo desu ga). These web novels are clearly written with only the barest planning ahead and no overarching plot, no underlying themes, and no writing experience to back it up. The author had a singular neat idea and wrote a few chapters inside the framework of a stock plot and a stock setting. Syosetsu is the Steam Greenlight of literature and we're reading the asset flips. I read two new quests recently, one of which is on topic that I'll cautiously recommend: History's Most Mediocre Cultivator: A cultivator with mediocre talents who really can't keep up with his peers. He's only just reached the sect so there's not much to go off of, but it's a nice enough little prologue so far. Usually I wouldn't bring up anything this early into its run, but there's nothing offensive or bad and it's on topic. The Fire That Burns: a magical girl quest that I started out enjoying - the protagonist has a clear goal (protect her sister) and a strong personality, which are good to have. But as I read through it I couldn't really get a read on the main character, she flies off the handle at the smallest things and can be so irrational she's uncontrollable. It's less the thread choosing what she does and more the thread vaguely pointing her in a direction and hoping the author isn't going to have her jump off a cliff out of spite because they didn't agree with the thread's decision. I don't think I'd recommend it but I did read enough to catch up, and haven't decided if I'm going to keep following it or not. I also read Vermillion recently, which is about players of an ultra-realistic MMO getting stuck in it, but is more like a fantasy survival story. What was translated of it was okay but not exceptional; the high score on NU seems to be from people conflating "gritty" with good, and it's far too early to tell either way. The translation is so glacially slow (one fourth to one half of a chapter every two weeks, and these are not long chapters) that it's just not worth the mental load of following.

Arkeus posted:Nighthunter is actually not awful about this, as is Doomsday wonderland. "There is no Epic Loot here, Only Puns (Dungeon)" is also decent. Yeah, I have to second the recommendation for Epic Loot. Basically, in a fantasy world where dungeons are living entities harvested for resources, a newborn, intelligent dungeon is born right outside a sleepy retirement community for adventurers.

Epic Loot is good but it was hilarious how the writer deliberately set out to create a female protagonist who wasn’t a silent sex object but immediately swaps those issues with other ones with how he portrays her character.

Read The Tutorial is Too Hard yesterday. I'm not sure if it's been mentioned here before? It's another "trapped in a game-like world" story, complete with op protagonist, but with a few fun twists. First off, people are constantly graduating from and being inducted into the game, so they have a channel of communication with the real world. Second, that real world has apparently been invaded by monsters and the superhumans the game produces are desperately needed to fight them off. Third, the story spends a lot of time on the psychological and social consequences of being suddenly transported into a horrible death world full of monsters. It didn't wow me or anything, but it has its moments (the monks!).

I have to recommend White Collar Cultivator, it's a quest that's pretty much just starting that's about a guy who was mistakenly kidnapped by a cultivator organization and has to work as a paper-pusher. The mortal work ethic is way stronger than that of cultivators (who would much rather cultivate than do their job) so he gets noticed pretty quickly. Seems like it'll have some interesting things to do with clichés in the genre ('righteous anger' and killing tons of people and all that) later on if what's been hinted at is any indication. Uhhh the author writes tons and tons of words per update, the most recent update being the same as a certain vegetable man's meme in word length, but although I skimmed over some stuff like the book reports it doesn't feel like padding as much as either worldbuilding, foreshadowing, or a tiny bit of plot. Another recommendation for A Will Eternal as well. Pretty sure someone on here said this already but the main character is essentially the main character from Kung Fu Hustle except even more shameless and it's hilarious.

Nanke calmly reasoned, "We can kill him right now, and the fact that we haven't means that we've spared his life. Then he can use his life in exchange. This is very fair." "This makes sense to you?" Zhizhi opened her eyes wide, utter disbelief within. Nanke asked Zhizhi, "Do you not understand?" Zhizhi seriously replied, "I don't understand bullshit." I wasn't sold before, but Zhizhi suddenly became amazing.

I can enjoy and appreciate some of it but I wish something would happen to alter that formula. Ordinarily events in a story would build up to a climax and resolution of some sort.

I just finished reading through what there is of Forge of Destiny, and it’s really good. It almost doesn’t fit in this thread because it’s not garbage enough. Luckily it has a bunch of chucklefucks voting for what the mc does so I guess that qualifies it. I highly recommend everyone go read it right now.

cultivation chat group is absurdly good, and along with not being a sociopathic rear end in a top hat i enjoy how the main character isn't the unprecedented super-master of every single cultivation step i mean yeah he goes through them pretty quick but he's just above-average, he has to rely on wacky shenanigans and bluffing his rear end off to win fights also he tends to get dragged into ridiculous adventures by his bored, farmville-addicted seniors which leads to poo poo like initial d tractor dragracing Yinlock fucked around with this message at 10:13 on Feb 19, 2018 |

Autonomous Monster posted:"four thousand, three hundred and sixteen words of people telling Maïne how cute she looks" Having literally the entire named cast show up to adulate over the protagonist is a little much. I had to constantly remind myself that the fact that Maïne is soooo cuuuute is relevant to the story in ways that are actually pretty clever in order to get through this chapter. I am not the target audience for this particular kind of self-indulgent scene, but the readers seem to be eating it up, so... Time to read some equally self-indulgent scenes of fingers being waved to cause people to explode, dead in body and soul.
