A woman (in her 30s) I used to meet sent me a message telling me about her Spring Festival at home. She decided to bring her new boyfriend to hometown, which isn't that far out of Shenzhen. I asked how long they had been together, since taking a guy to hometown during that festival is a huge deal and gives the impression they are planning to get married. She's only met him about 4 or 5 times, and she said they haven't had sex or anything too serious yet. I asked about his job and she said he an English tutor. Me: "Oh, he's a foreigner?" Her: "Yeah, American." Me: "Is it a legal job or illegal?" Her: "How do I know the difference?" Me: "Does he work in a shopping center and has to leave China every 60-days to Hong Kong to renew his visa?" Her: "Oh...yes, but he prefers Macao." Me: LMAO Her: "Is that bad?" Me: "Well, it's not a stable thing. He can run away from China any time he likes, or if he gets caught." Her: "I see, but he says he wants to find a wife." Me: "And then what? You want to marry him?" Her: "I don't know. He says he likes Chinese girls. I don't want to be single anymore." Me: "Alright. How long has been in China?" Her: "Six month. This is his first time to China." Me: "How does he feel?" Her: "He is very lonely." Me: "And you believe you're the only woman he is meeting?" Her: "I think so." Me: "Let me see his photo." Her: "No! That's rude!" Me: "He's ugly? You sent me a photo of your last boyfriend." Her: "I refuse!" So she tricked this guy (that's in his late-30s) to go home for Spring Festival with her since he didn't know what it is or what it means to bring a guy to hometown, and it seems he thinks it's like a Thanksgiving dinner and totally normal to introduce yourself to her entire extended family. She's working the tricks to dupe this guy into marriage and he has no idea what's going on. I reckon he'll eventually post on r/China "I got married because my Chinese wife said it's her culture."

When they originally built the pits for the warriors, they used wooden beams to hold up the ceiling, then packed earth on top. However, over time the ground shifted, it rained, beams rotted and fell on to the warriors, either crushing them directly, or allowing access for other people to smash and loot them over the centuries. Only two complete figures were ever unearthed. All the others looked like Re-attaching a thumb is a tiny job for those archeologists.

This is from ages back relating to the Embassy and passport discussion. I posted earlier in this thread about vacationing in Japan and I did have a great time. Except I managed to lose my passport in Sendai. Which I noticed on the train to Yamagata. And my next hotel was in Tokyo. And it was 1.1. So I called my countries foreign ministry's hotline for issues like this and asked wtf. Told me the embassy is closed until 4.1. and I would have to make due, but that they will notify the Embassy about my predicament. Had a normal day out and about Yamagata and Zao'onsen then and both were awesome. So, its about midnight, arrive in Ueno, find a police box, broken japanese/english tell them I lost my passport. They tell me to go to the police station and show me the way. Find my way over there, and walk in, literally the whole lobby shuts up and turns around to look at the gaijin coming in. Again explain my situation and they understand, still nobody actually speaks English. When they realize I actually lost my passport in Sendai, they are asking me why am I in Tokyo then. I half expected them to tell me to go back to Sendai to file the report for lost passport. I tried to explain that I really dont need the passport back right away that I just need the paper from them that Ive filed it with them so I can get a new one from the Embassy when it opens. After a while of talking and Google Translating, they sit me down and after about an hour of calls to my hotel and what not, they bring me a piece of paper to sign. I understand that this is finally the police report I wanted and sign it with my fingerprint lol. During all this, my friends had waited outside because theyre pussies afraid of the cops and witnessed a drunk woman getting thrown out of a taxi in front of the station, throwing up and being sent on her way by the police, who used a bucket of water to clean the sidewalk. They were told to come in because it was cold and again the whole lobby turned around to look at them but returned to their phones/papers when I said they were my friends. Well, after all, I checked in to my hotel, showed the paper from the police to explain why I didnt have a passport and slept pretty good. The next day I actually get a call from the Embassy asking about my situation if Im safe and got money. Explained that Im fine and got told that if I have the paper and passport photos ready, I can just come in the same day, just give the guy a call and he will open the Embassy gate for me. So the same day I already got my cool hot pink coloured passport on hand. it looks like that to make it obvious that this is a temporary passport. When leaving the country I overheard the girls operating the check in counter that it looked cute Thats my passport and embassy story, namaste Patrocclesiastes fucked around with this message at 08:17 on Feb 22, 2018 |

Pushkar, India: We arrive at the Brahma temple and a Brahmin takes us around and shows us stuff, repeating every few sentences about the donation office and how the donations feed the 20,000 Brahmins of Pushkar or whatever. We get our puja done down by the lake and go up to the office and lol there's some tourist-trap bullshit sign saying you must give 2100 INR minimum, we give 500 and bail because my wife speaks Hindi and knows that's them trying to gently caress tourists. 500 will feed like 10+ people just fine on the "rice and milk and flour" the Brahmin said they eat. On the way back to the car, we are accosted by a robed beggar who shook a cup and uttered the most self-aware thing I've heard spoken in India thus far: "Money money money money!"

First rule: Never listen to temple brahmins or priests about anything. It's their job and livelihood, and most of them became priests because of family line only and just do it for the easy money. They follow the rituals with about as much spiritual feeling as a wet potato sack on the docks, especially when money is involved. They just look at you as if you're the biggest rube in the world to let them do a puja or something for you. Like, they look down on you for being so stupid. The last thing big temples need, especially tourist temples, is money. All of that goes directly into someone's pocket, or to send their kids to school abroad or buy their Samsung phones to watch porn on. This isn't the case in small little village mandirs, but totally the case in anything big that gets a lot of regular visitors. We all know how bad their idea of customer service is, and this is totally applicable in temples. They're worse than the bellhops at hotels. Second rule: Especially don't listen to them in tourist areas. Third rule: Try not to go to tourists areas, but if you do, the best thing is totally ignore everyone completely even when they try to forcibly give you a tour or some prasad or tilak or whatever the heck scam they have running. The most common is the priest/beggar will run up and throw a garland on you or give some prasad without asking, and then hold their hand out for tips. Fourth rule: Give local-sized donations, like 10-20 rupees. There's nothing that can do about that, as anything higher is all on you. Fifth rule: Pretending you don't speak English does work pretty well. Just babble in nonsense French and they'll go away.
