Elon Musk is kinda obnoxious, but his charismatic übermensch image DID inspire my super libertarian father who doesn't believe in climate change to buy a Tesla. You take the good with the bad.

Yes, and apparently there's a male(?) pikachu who tapes on a different heart shaped item onto their tail because female pikachus have heart shaped tails. Fans are saying that pikachu is trans, which is cool if it's canon. It's been a while since I've been a tiny loaf of bread and played/watch anything Pokemon.Ornamental Dingbat posted:I love that people are surprised that they have to deal with the dregs of humanity when they travel aboard a conveyance literally called an Airbus. Ah if only they flew in the Ol' Musky's Hyperloop and had their bones rattled so hard they broke and gone deaf from the high pitched screaming as they are flung from Point A to Point B. Then they wouldn't have to deal with such riffraff.

SiKboy posted:Doesnt matter. Theres a reason that NASA astronauts werent allowed to just pack whatever they wanted to bring to space. Before any astronaut went to space on untested hardware, multiple unmanned test launches took place*. The very first Apollo flight carried a big tank of water for ballast. The second Apollo flight repeated this, but released the water into the atmosphere at some point. The third flight was a 100% repeat of the second. Multiple later flights carried boilerplate hardware, which was a 'sort of looks like a spacecraft' metal construction only for weight and aerodynamics. Point is, things have to be tested first and weight restrictions on human passengers have nothing to do with test flights and ballasts. Not trying to defend the Musk personality cult or denying that using a Tesla for ballast was very much a publicity move. But I'm certain that the engineers in charge got some needed data from that flight. *except for the Space Shuttle, which went up manned for the first flight. Andrast posted:Musk is a garbage right ring union buster but at least his billionaire vanity projects have potential of being useful There's a good reason to dislike Musk. quote:space shuttle was garbage Eh, it's biggest problems had to do with mission capabilities imposed by the Air Force. Ever wonder why the wings on the Shuttle are so much larger than current space planes like the XB-37? The AF demanded that the Shuttle be able to launch from Vandenberg into a single polar orbit, and then return to the launch site. This requires the Shuttle to fly about 1000 miles cross-range (east-west) to make up for Earth's rotation under the single orbit so it can land at VAFB. The very first Vandenberg launch was planned for February 1986, about a month after Challenger went up for the last time. Consequently, the AF lost all interest and cancelled the flights. The orbiters never went into polar orbit and the cross-range soar capability was never used. The wings were too loving big for the entire lifetime of the Space Shuttle. The AF turned around and designed their own thing not weighed down with the problems perceived in the Shuttle, such as not having a crew at all. Apparently training for the classified DOD Space Shuttle missions required duplicate, secret facilities separate from NASA control facilities. Now the AF can fly its XB-37 with drone operators from Palmdale and keep the loving thing in orbit for over two years at a time. TotalLossBrain has a new favorite as of 20:19 on Feb 25, 2018 |

SiKboy posted:Doesnt matter. Theres a reason that NASA astronauts werent allowed to just pack whatever they wanted to bring to space. Every 1kg payload on the rocket requires the rocket use more fuel to get into space. I've seen different numbers for how much fuel is needed per kilogram, but a common estimate is about 9kg of fuel for every 1kg of payload. Google tells me that a tesla roadster (sans dummy) has a mass of about 1300 kg, so Musk may have burned 11700 kg of fuel essentially just because his ribcage prevents him getting far over enough to literally suck his own dick. Hot take. Also totally moronic. To actually do a meaningful test launch of a rocket, you need a dummy payload, a big chunk of inert mass. NASA used to use plain old steel boilerplate, built in the rough shape of what they were eventually going to launch. Musk used an obsolete Tesla Roadster, a car that isn't only not even made anymore but which was in the first place just a fundraiser product built on a Lotus platform so Tesla could raise seed capital to make the cars they actually wanted to make, and which had a broke-dick transmission that ended up getting the car recalled. Tesla actually wanted to buy back every one still out there from their owners. If they didn't launch that 1300kg test mass, burning 11700 kg of fuel, the launch wouldn't have proven a damned thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boilerplate_(spaceflight) Phanatic has a new favorite as of 00:21 on Feb 26, 2018 |
