What, are you supposed to think that that particular time it for real has legit spooky magicks?

The Stalker series has one of the coolest enemy attack moves in the form of the Controller who attacks you by literally ripping your camera viewpoint out of your head and zooming it up to the enemy, and then snapping it back to make you take damage. It makes me surprised that it hasn't shown up in any other games, like Bioshock or Prey or similar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-q4ZK7QAKc The first time it happens you don't get any special introduction to the enemy either - it spawns a distance behind you as you're doing a story quest, so you're on your way out and then you hear the high-pitched ringing noise and then WHOA

RyokoTK posted:It... Nah that's like, the level one plot. The level two plot is that visual novel characters are and have always been simulated people and VN writers just gently caress with their brains until they wanna bang the player, and throw in some mental illness for flavour if they want the player to care about them. The level three plot is that's not true but holy poo poo it might as well be, writers are loving monsters and VN writers doubly so. It's a game with some bleak and not particularly nuanced opinions.

I wouldn't consider that to be the plot so much as the message it's trying to convey but that's a semantic argument that probably just belongs in the dumpster. The writer's opinion isn't especially nuanced but I did like it anyway.

Disgaea 5 I'm surprised that the effort was put in but aside from how the game plays, in general, like how you can just move your character around if you've selected a skill that doesn't reach an enemy if you hold down square and move the control stick (imagine Final Fantasy Tactics), I just found out that your generic units actually do have totally different personalities depending on what you set them to when you're in the hub area.

Now that I've unlocked all the levels in Yooka Laylee, I really like the structure of the Casino level - on it's face it's like any casino level, collect tokens and trade them for prizes, but there is actually no gambling at all, it's pure skill based movement. Hell, a lot of the tokens you get by using that levels transformation, and blowing the hell out of the broken machines, which is pretty fun, and some of the key items/tokens come from Slot machines that are more timing based puzzles than anything. I like that it's dressed up as a casino, but doesn't play like one, because I hate casinos, especially the ones that gate content like in FF 13-2

Titanfall 2's credits includes a cast roll where each major character shows up in a little tableau, with the VA listed for each. Considering the level of detail that's in each model, it's nice to get a good look at them and it's also a nice way to credit the actors.

Titanfall 2 is a testament to how much polish, thoughtful design, and tight gameplay can take something that seems pretty rote on paper and turn it into something really special. It's hard to define the little things in it because of how well it all fits together, but man, that game works

The X-Men Origins: Wolverine game is surprisingly great (and much better than the film it's based on). The best bit is the awesome lunge move that sends Wolverine shooting across a level impaling some poor fucker. You can chain it, so you're pinballing around like an angry slicing machine. Also Wolverine spends most of the game furiously screaming at the top of his lungs. It rules.

I actually do understand where you're coming from in that thread though I think TF2's success is a combination of not expecting a single player campaign at all, and excellent timing. There's been a resurgence of single player focused FPS again (Doom 2016, despite the publisher's attempts, and Wolfenstein) and while TF2 may not push the envelope in terms of story it really hits that power fantasy that FPS campaigns used to hit and really have been lacking in the past few years. It just synced with me.

I loved the damage modeling in that game. If you get lit the gently caress up wolverine will just be missing huge chunks of his flesh, which will slowly regenerate back in of course. It's a shame its not on any digital distribution platforms

I noticed that, but the tank-top regenerates between cutscenes. It's a really cool effect, especially for 2009. Sometimes I smash an explosive barrel just to see him go from Terminator like adamantium to flesh again.

I finished a game called Disgaea 5 last night - I think it was a pretty fun game, aside from some really gross poo poo and characters that look like they escaped from Shante, the game had a lot of optional stuff that never really felt like a waste of time or were really required to beat the game. The story was super cheesy and campy, but I was okay with it - though somethings were definitely way too quirky for me at times - sometimes it'd get a laugh, and sometimes I just be worried that someone would be watching me play this. I didn't think I was going to end up liking this game at all (I got it for christmas and put off playing it for about a week) being both tactics and anime, which I'm usually not into, - but it kind of surprised me. There's this mechanic in the game where you can go to a senate and try to get a bill passed to unlock more stuff and features, but you have to pay for entry - and it can fail. However - you do have the option to beat them up in combat and have the bill passed instantly. And after beating the game, I realized that I can actually just dunk on everyone in the room so I've been passing bills like crazy by just whaling the poo poo out of everyone and it feels really cathartic. Also its a "jrpg" that knows grinding sucks, so it lets you break the goddamn game so you can readjust how much you get money or skillpoints and dump that all into exp so people are jumping 20 levels between fights. More games need to accept that grinding is awful and just be like "we know your going to be dead in a few years - so lets just try to make things as quick as possible while still letting you play the game".

At the time it was the only thing comparable to God of War on non-Sony platforms. It also somehow managed to pull a higher rating than the movie it was based on, so while movie wolvie was bloodlessly punching people game wolvie was yanking them out of helicopter windshields and shoving their heads into the rotors. Movies didn't catch up until Logan almost a decade later.
