TOURNAMENT REPORT

So I went down to Folkestone a couple hours away to play in a small ITS tournament, only 8 of us there but really good terrain, well organised affair in a nice big games store. I took Corregidor as always, I took one fairly conventional list with 15 or 16 models, a second group that was quite a conservative backer to provide board control to a main group. I took another list which on reflection and use I don't like as much - the full 20 models, everything starting on the board. While that style of list does open up some good options, I just feel that when I lose one or two key pieces I have no exciting offensive options and my orders get massively expended just making up for that.

- Game 1. Quadrant Control. Facing Yu Jing. My opponent was a very nice guy but not an experienced player – he won the initiative roll but picked first turn, not a great choice for this mission, where the ability to move the right troops into zones each round is 9/10 of the points on offer! He was using a single combat group and I had my more conventional list. His initial attack killed a couple useful pieces with his Su-Jian, Yan Huo HMRC and an Oniwaban, but a potentially very bold move (combat dropping a Tiger Soldier right into the middle of my DZ) went wrong and scattered between 2 Crazy Koalas. He ain't gonna jump no more. With second round advantage I was able to cut him up badly and secure quarters in each round. My Bandit KHD did well, getting right to his DZ and blasting vulnerable models. His most dangerous piece, the Su-Jian, was overextended and eventually went down. 3rd turn was just moving for the classified objective, I could have wiped his 2 remaining support troops but burned the rest of my turn. 10-1 Major Victory, 259 points remaining to opponent’s 22.

- Game 2. Firefight. Facing Tohaa. I ended up going first, which I think came from his choice to choose deployments. His list was cookiecutter tournament Tohaa – 4 triads, 3 headed by Gao-Raels and 1 by a Sukeul, all Symbiomated, specialist/doctor/warband support. I threw my long-range and attacking pieces at him in an aggressive first turn and lost every time. I don’t think my plan was very inspired but I was also unlucky. To a certain extent you have to engage enemy ARO pieces like snipers, or they will completely pin you down the whole game. I wasn't taking any stupid risks like engaging multiple models at once, but the odds aren't too overwhelming when the quality AROs are B2. So when I did win I killed symbiomates and when I lost my valuable pieces went straight down. In my first turn I lost 4 models pushing the attack and only got one of his (not even a firepower model, it was a specialist I caught out of position) I then compounded my woes with a very poor ‘tilt’ decision to attack with my Wildcat Lt rather than withdrawing him back toward safety. I absolutely should have moved him right back, if anything. I failed to kill one target with them and then had to tuck him away, but all too close to the enemy. In my opponent’s rather hesitant attacks I did end up in Loss of Lieutenant, further hurting me. Absolutely couldn’t get through the toughness of his list with my remaining filler models, having lost my hitters. Really also brought home to me the weaknesses of my super-spammy 20 model list. I did manage to break one of his Triads with a bit of luck, but the game wasn't that close. I was down to throwing chain rifles at 2-wound models and other quixotic efforts. Due to my wasted turns, he also had plenty of leisure to achieve his secondary objectives. 7-2 Defeat, 120 points remaining to opponent’s 175. loving Tohaa.

- Game 3.Decapitation. Facing Hassassin Bahram. He won the roll to go first, a powerful position due to the mission rules and his 2 Fidays! We both didn’t really grasp the full implications of Designated Targets, in this mission your HVT is a target, the enemy can score an easy 5pts straight off by killing it with a non-marker model. And of course this mission is 16" deployment zones, so this super vulnerable mission critical asset is sitting right in the middle waiting for the enemy to strike. On this particular terrain setup there was nowhere secure for either of us to put our DTs. So I lost mine instantly, he also tried hard to Fiday my own Data-tracker but luckily fell just short. His Fiday character did shank Senor Massacre and a Jaguar straight off the bat in the attempt. Most irritatingly, my opponent's main board presence was a full Muyib link starting inside a closed objective room. He opened the rear door and executed multiple speculative fire trick shots to kill my Lt in his secure internal room of a building in my DZ. And the doctor after I revived him the first time. And 2 other models. I was not impressed and this was an extremely lucky streak! There were some little firefights over the rest of the board, I cleared my opponent off, killing a Farzan, an Ayyar and some other stuff. But that little fortress of 5 Muyibs in a closed room remained. 2 separate suicide attack runs both failed to get his Lt or a single other casualty. Dude was passing a fair few arm rolls and his Lt beat a Jaguar in close combat. This left me one Lt down compared to him, and we'd both killed the DT with our Datatrackers. 10-5 Defeat, 132 points remaining to opponent’s 147. This was a much closer game than the scoreline shows, even a couple Muyib failed saves, especially on his Lt, would have swung it. Great game.

- Tournament Results: So obviously I didn't place that well overall. I did get a nice prize (Ltd Ed Crane Agent) for scoring secret novelty objectives though! During each game the TO came and handed out secret random things to do - mine were 'Rambo' (engage 3 models with one during a BS attack, survive the experience for an extra point) which I got playing against Tohaa; and 'Bullet Proof Monk' (make 3 or more ARM rolls with a single model in a turn) which a Jaguar gained trying to storm a room of Muyibs - there were some other ARM rolls he didn't make!

While a couple of the games above sound quite negative reading the synopsis back, actually I had a great time in the third round, my oppo there is a really class guy, and even Tohaa dude is a nice bloke, it's just a bad army to enjoy bad luck against. Good time, would go there again.

It certainly doesn't help that it always sounds like it negates individual successful hits at first, but no, it's really the entire attack... unless they're crits, because why make this easy to communicate to the other player?

Nope. Unconscious remotes can't even be repeaters - they shut off comms equipment even at Unconsciousness level one. That one really sucks.

Some states you could ARO from - you could reset if you were immobilized, stunned, or whatever else, but you're SoL if you're in a null state. Any exceptions will call it out otherwise.

With your remote, you can Reset against the initial attack that knocked it into Unconscious 1, but Goodnight only lets you take the BTS rolls, rather than turn it into a face to face roll and then the BTS roll.

It’s an army pack for JSA. There was a concept art or cover pic, similar to the box art on red veil or ice storm. Contents are as follows:

3x Keisotsu Butai
2x Ryuken Unit-9(new unit)
1x Kempeitai
1x Daiyokai Dengekitai(new unit)
1x Oniwaban
1x Kuge Delegate(new unit)
1x Kuroshi Rider, Aragato Senkenbutai Riku-Gun-Shoi(what is with these names?! new unit)

Plus card scenery, dice etc as standard.

That’s info I found on dakkadakka. It appears that some warcor leaked a screenshot of the cb we store maybe? In any case it’s being treated bizarrely secretly of fb with warcors asking people not to talk about it.

Peace through overwhelming determination
The problem I find with Devil Dogs is that they're huge S6 models with super jump and extremely impetuous. A lot of the time, unless you blow their order cancelling extremely impetuous, they'll be super jumping onto buildings and over things making themselves even taller and drawing all sorts of fire.

At 30 points it's kinda unacceptable imo, but they have really lovely models that are great so I take them anyways.

The pawsting business is tough work.
For those that didn't get to see it, there's a list of models as above and an illustration. No pictures of the actual figures.

The new Aragoto looks like an uncritical ripoff of the headless biker chick from Durarara
There's a Ryuken in the foreground with cyber-eyes who looks a touch like Bato from GitS, which would fit with the "Unit 9" thing
The Kei looks an awful lot like a Zanshi wearing parachute pants, so my converted models shouldn't look too out of place
There's a lady wearing a hacker headset that I'm guessing is the Delegate, who also appears to have bolts sticking out of her collar bones
And what could be a S6 TAG or a S5 HI like the Kriza/Taskmaster with a Shikami hat and two swords that I assume is the Daiyokai.

It would be swell if CB would stop making half their new releases references to someone else's IP. It's a matter of time before they get sued, if nothing else. If the Delegate is another Karakuri-style robot, that would be genuinely cool, and also hopefully presages a Karakuri update, 'cause drat they need it.

Tying back into prior conversation here, putting in a new character Aragoto makes me wonder if YJ will be keeping a lot of stuff. It'd be a little odd for them to produce a new profile that horns in on another pre-existing character's niche so directly, but then nothing's stopped CB from making weird decisions in the past.

I'm pretty hyped for the whole thing, goofy references aside.

Sorry, I meant attacking with grenades.

Dog Warriors throw a grenade at you within 8" and its a face-to-face with an effective PH 19. Also, you can speculative-fire grenades at like PH 10.

Devil Dogs shoot at you with Chain Rifles and its a template to attack, followed by a normal roll of them shooting back. (If they didn't dodge.)

Dog Warriors are scary with grenades.

Nah, they don't have a sweet phys attack. The closest they get is a heavy shotgun, which is kind of nice, but you're at only BS 16 within eight.

I'd take a Dog-warrior over a Cameronian over a Devil Dog, but USARF gotta work with what it's got.
