I finished a game called Disgaea 5 last night - I think it was a pretty fun game, aside from some really gross poo poo and characters that look like they escaped from Shante, the game had a lot of optional stuff that never really felt like a waste of time or were really required to beat the game. The story was super cheesy and campy, but I was okay with it - though somethings were definitely way too quirky for me at times - sometimes it'd get a laugh, and sometimes I just be worried that someone would be watching me play this.

I didn't think I was going to end up liking this game at all (I got it for christmas and put off playing it for about a week) being both tactics and anime, which I'm usually not into, - but it kind of surprised me.

There's this mechanic in the game where you can go to a senate and try to get a bill passed to unlock more stuff and features, but you have to pay for entry - and it can fail.
However - you do have the option to beat them up in combat and have the bill passed instantly. And after beating the game, I realized that I can actually just dunk on everyone in the room so I've been passing bills like crazy by just whaling the poo poo out of everyone and it feels really cathartic.

Also its a "jrpg" that knows grinding sucks, so it lets you break the goddamn game so you can readjust how much you get money or skillpoints and dump that all into exp so people are jumping 20 levels between fights. More games need to accept that grinding is awful and just be like "we know your going to be dead in a few years - so lets just try to make things as quick as possible while still letting you play the game".

This is true, up until you get to the postgame of Disgaea which is all grinding all the time. But hey, that's why it's in the postgame.

I can't see any reason to use the ability to- I guess- start the game over but keep your levels and items, since there's a setting in the Cheat Shop that lets you put things back to their original set up every level.

Is that Reincarnation or the New Game + thing? Because the only reason for the later is if you messed up the good ending - or want to see the alternate bad endings since they depend on your ally kills at the time.
And reincarnation, I think, builds up a characters base stats - so as they level back up from 1, their stats get a lot higher than before due to the base stats increasing depending on the stats of the guy you reset.

It's the pirate in the corner asking if you want to go backwards in time. And I don't know how in depth that gets. Do I have to get to chapter 6 to get the squads unlocked or is everything still going to stick around?

I haven't touched it - but I think everything stays the same aside from the story progression from what I looked up, assembly, squads, etc. are untouched - though quests are reset.
But the Pirate is the New Game + guy. And the only reason I know why'd you want to do a new game + is to unlock the bad endings for 100% completion - which I'm not touching.

Yeah when I mean New Game + I'm talking about bonus bosses, Carnage Dimension, and Baal and stuff. The content that requires you to master every single class on a character to get them 300% bonus stats, then leveling them to 9999 multiple times, reincarnating back to 1, and then back to 9999 multiple times until they have stats in the billions. And also get them all the best equipment in the game and maxing their levels out, complete with specialists in all their items to crank them out to absurd levels.

Yeah, the absurd heights to which the leveling/grind can extend is what the series is known for, though I think D5 stepped back on this a little and focused more on marketing the story and gameplay instead of just "You can level forever, deal a trillion damage!". At the same time, I've played every single Disgaea game and never once actually completed that stuff. Once I get to post game I usually play around in item world for a bit, get the characters I like pretty powerful, do a couple reincarnations and by then I've moved on to something else. Disgaea games kind of grow to fill your time/attention. They function perfectly well whether you're just interested in playing through a story, or if you want a monstrous time-sink of a game and anything in between.

I feel like I should hate how Disgaea approaches peak anime, but for whatever reason, I find it charming. I guess it is so unabashed and upfront with it that it triggers some nostalgia or something. Not that it doesn't get gross or cringe-y, but I overall find the characters and predictable plots endearing. The voice actors always ham it up too.

On that classic blue and yellow costume, originally in the comics, his claws came out from on top of his hand, and the gloves had little slots for them to emerge from, instead of between his knuckles. If I remember right, they come out from those little slots on that costume, too, instead of between the knuckles.

I actually do understand where you're coming from in that thread though I think TF2's success is a combination of not expecting a single player campaign at all, and excellent timing. There's been a resurgence of single player focused FPS again (Doom 2016, despite the publisher's attempts, and Wolfenstein) and while TF2 may not push the envelope in terms of story it really hits that power fantasy that FPS campaigns used to hit and really have been lacking in the past few years. It just synced with me.

Some of it might also be because right before I played it I ran through Syndicate, and the gap between the two is much smaller than you would expect. Though in fairness, that speaks to how ahead of the curve Starbreeze was than strictly being a slight against TF2.

Well I mean it is Marvel, the Hulk did the same thing. Honestly I don't get the appeal of these comic superheroes, after a guy comes back from being a skeleton where is the threat of him ever actually dying?

The health system worked like a shallow pool that was constantly refilling. Normal thugs were just gonna piss you off but 6 of the giant golems simultaneously smashing you is gonna be trouble.
Plus it took a couple of seconds of taking no damage for the healing to kick in.

Yeah, it was a standard regenerating health mechanic, except it fit perfectly within the character's concept and they went the extra mile with the visual effects. You could easily take enough damage to die, it would just rip off large chunks of your flesh first.

IIRC you didn't lose health from losing chunks of flesh from your body. Instead, you lost health from your now-exposed heart taking damage until it went kaputt.

He plays for the dreamers that forgot how to dream, and the lovers that forgot how to love.
Something I like with Yooka Laylee now that I have almost all of the powers and am clearing out the pagies in the worlds is that the worlds all expand differently so far. The Aztec level gets more vertical spires and things but the ice level just unlocks the doors to a level that's a large isometric maze with many pagies to find and puzzles to solve. It gives each level a very unique feel and that's cool despite the game's many flaws.

Depends on who is the author! :haw:
Sometimes you can come back from a fatal heart stabbing by injecting some Wolverine blood, sometimes it gives you cancer, sometimes it gives you limited powers for as long as the plot needs, etc.

I just played Stories Untold. I like it. The atmosphere was somewhat spoiled by my need to occasionally alt-tab out and look up a walkthrough, but I think it's really good. But I'm torn - I can't decide if the 4th episode is the best or worst part of the game. Super duper spoiler ahead:

On the one hand, I feel a bit cheated by the idea that everything I had played up to that point was just the addled thoughts of a man recovering from a coma. The third episode in particular, I feel had an amazing mystery going on, and I wish I could have lingered in that world for just a little while longer, to find out what the hell was going on.

But on the other hand, I realise in hindsight just how craftily the devs seeded the reveal throughout the narrative. The whole context of The House Abandon, the glimpses of the crash in the alien's memories, the statement: "some day Mr. Aition, your actions will haunt you", the crashed cars in the snow, all the code words in the microfilm, even the name of the game itself... God, I'm going to have to replay this at some point, just to pick up all the little things I missed. It's the best mystery I've experienced in a game for a long time.

I wonder if whoever read that, ever actually read the arc that dealt with Bruce Banner's abusive lovely dad.

Anyway, my favorite little thing in games right now is R-Type Final's story. For a game with like, maybe 30 lines of text? It has a surprisingly engaging story, I think so at least. I absolutely love one of the endings; After killing a source of the living-metal life forms you've been fighting the whole game your ship gets converted into a horrible bio-mechanical thing and warped back in time to the first stage of the game. Except this time you're fighting the fleet of human ships because they think you're an enemy. The last boss being the iconic ship of the R-Type series. When you win the fight you're given one final text transmission from your pilot's log lamenting that the sea birds are the only one who seem to recognize them anymore.
If you actually play through the first stage of the game, you can see the infected ship fly past you for a split second before the first wave of enemies show up.
I guess it's not really a "little thing". But I had a lot of fun with it. There's even a throw back in a single stage of the game that references the ending of R-Type Delta.
