once when i was like 19 i was talking with a female family friend about my college exams and i used the term "raped" to mean "was defeated by/did poorly at", in the manner i was used to speaking because i was a teenager who hung around mostly with horrible video gamers. the friend was aghast and quite rightly castigated me for using the term in that way. at the time i thought she was just a huge bitch but within a few years i grew up and i am glad i no longer speak like that. you don't use language like that because you're trying to fit in with assholes -- you do it because you are ignorant and you don't see anything wrong with it.

i like el cerrito and live close. its a bit underrated and albany/cerrito border has a lot of fun stuff. it's certainly not very exciting (which can be good for cheaper housing, bad for dates) and yeah the northern side going into richmond along san pablo is p dead. but it's still moderately affordable and mostly working/middle class and decent transit options. the houses in cerrito hills are not terribly overpriced for what you can get either

yea remember that "large state" at the time meant "has a ton of slaves" more often than not (Virginia, the Carolinas, etc) , while "small state" tended to mean states with fewer slaves (new jersey, Rhode Island, New Hampshire etc).

the three largest colonies were virginia, pennsylvania, and massachusetts, two of which forbade slavery. rhode island, new jersey, and new hampshire were all slave states at the time

the three fifths compromise and related matters were a desperate attempt to make underdeveloped slave powers like VA equal to PA or MA in the new government

most of the colonies permitted slavery, but new england, new york, and PA were much further developed than the south, even in the late 18th century

what the gently caress are you talking about

in 1776 there was virginia, then a huge loving gap, then everything else. maryland and north carolina were like 15% smaller than pennsylvania and massachusetts. virginia was almost the size of pennsylvania and massachusetts combined

i mean if you went all the way to georgia then sure, that was barely settled by europeans. it was also a new colony and still very much on the frontier, with a large native population until jackson’s genocide

now by the time of the civil war this had all pretty much changed, there was a huge population explosion in the north. but that was definitely a new thing, mostly post-revolutionary

absolutely every colony permitted slavery at the eve of the revolution, massachusetts didn't ban slavery until the peace treaty with england had been signed. by the time the consitution was being drafted in the late 1780s, it was still only massachusetts that had abolished slavery. and as of the 1790 census conducted pretty much immediately after

also you're forgetting that the 3/5 compromise significantly limited slave states throwing around their large enslaved populations, though in the end only south carolina was affected enough by the 3/5 rule that its adjusted population would rank it behind a less-slavey state it'd otherwise be in front of

in a situation where we only counted the free population, virginia would still merely go from #1 state in population to #2 in population after massachusetts. it didn't need any assistance to be "developed" or up in power, it was the oldest goddamn colony and its "development" status was second only to similarly ancient colony massachusetts. it just also had a shitload of slavery on top of that.

i mean i assume hillary clinton was a perfectly good lawyer back in the day, she's just a terrible politician in basically every way, except maybe crafting policy in a vacuum

donald trump is absolute poo poo at most things in his life, including the kind of politics that would let him get anything done, i.e. building trusting relationships with his peers, but the reason he always seems to fail upwards is that he has a con-man's intuition for telling people what they want to hear

no, it was also the compromise against the slaves counting as whole persons for everything, as the more-slave states had demanded. the fewer-slave states varied in opinion from "no counting" to various systems of pro-rating - iirc one delegate to the constiutional convention had even proposed that anyone unable to vote for reasons like being a woman or a child should also be discounted from any population-based apportionment

due to the vast amount of slaves in the country, it was unlikely that not counting them at all would ever have been agreed to
