what the gently caress are you talking about in 1776 there was virginia, then a huge loving gap, then everything else. maryland and north carolina were like 15% smaller than pennsylvania and massachusetts. virginia was almost the size of pennsylvania and massachusetts combined i mean if you went all the way to georgia then sure, that was barely settled by europeans. it was also a new colony and still very much on the frontier, with a large native population until jackson’s genocide now by the time of the civil war this had all pretty much changed, there was a huge population explosion in the north. but that was definitely a new thing, mostly post-revolutionary

i mean i assume hillary clinton was a perfectly good lawyer back in the day, she's just a terrible politician in basically every way, except maybe crafting policy in a vacuum donald trump is absolute poo poo at most things in his life, including the kind of politics that would let him get anything done, i.e. building trusting relationships with his peers, but the reason he always seems to fail upwards is that he has a con-man's intuition for telling people what they want to hear

Notorious b.s.d. posted:3/5ths was the compromise against slaves counting as zero persons no, it was also the compromise against the slaves counting as whole persons for everything, as the more-slave states had demanded. the fewer-slave states varied in opinion from "no counting" to various systems of pro-rating - iirc one delegate to the constiutional convention had even proposed that anyone unable to vote for reasons like being a woman or a child should also be discounted from any population-based apportionment due to the vast amount of slaves in the country, it was unlikely that not counting them at all would ever have been agreed to rjmccall posted:also note that this table splits kentucky out as its own state, which at the time of drafting it was not oh yeah thats a goofer there, fixed
