It's because the US (for all its tremendous flaws) is perhaps as good as a democratic superpower could possibly be. They actually try to give a poo poo about human rights and democracy. They actually try to create and uphold international, democratic institutions. Sure, often the US fucks this up, or it is drowned in cynical realpolitik or jingoistic "we can kill anyone we want with no repercussions!" hyper-nationalism. Sure, my fantasy ideal would probably be something like Obama's USA and Gorbachev's reformed USSR as superpowers, balanced by strong, unified EU, AU and some asian equivalent. But right now the US is probably the best we can hope for. welp
