On a topic from a month or so ago - making the game harder for the Allies - is there any way you can guarantee a brutal Pearl strike? All the Carriers in the Pacific are sunk/in dry dock, Pearl is heavily damaged - so maximum early naval damage to the Allies, which interferes with your ability to slow down the Axis, which maximizes how quickly they can expand and dig in.. And also isn't -as- badly ahistorical as, say, having the Kriegsmarine helping from Suez.

Early on, Pearl is hit bad enough it will take a month or so to get fully operational, the 3-4 USN/RN Carriers you have to start with are gone until transfers can come in from the Atlantic and they have real green air groups, and you have 2-3 lost months where you have very little ability to respond beyond damage control or even slow the Axis.

You can hit Pearl multiple times after the scripted attack within the first couple of turns.

Also I believe the US carriers are always in their historical positions on Dec 7th so you can just go hit them too if you feel like 'metagaming' a little.

You can hit Pearl more than once, but the day 2+ strikes will no longer have surprise and so will face more and better CAP.

Generally, if you want to ensure that the Pearl result is at least as good as historical, you use the Dec 8 campaign start.

2 or 3 day Pearl, because the KB starts with full fuel, but you won't catch the carriers. If you want the carriers at the dock then you have to edit the scenario.

On the other hand if you go straight for them you can catch the carriers in their historical position on Dec 7, 1941. The Lexington and the Enterprise are both northwest of Hawaii in known hexes. However this means giving up on the battleships at Pearl and it is also a bit of a gamble because the carriers do move. This is definitely "gaming" things though.

Gay black Pearl Harbor seems like it would make sense to put in as a challenge start for Allies / slightly easier setting for Japan. Just start Dec 9 with everything smashed up real good?

Using save games could you not just reroll the dice until the most favourable outcomes are come across?

Really would love to see a totally "gamed"/exploited playthrough on both sides to the point I keep idly thinking about buying it to see about doing it myself.

The game is really good about autosaving so it’s really easy to call a mulligan on any given turn. I’ve done it a few times when I’ve made a mechanical mistake giving orders, like forgetting to issue them to an important unit or giving totally the wrong order.

Since the game makes an autosave immediately prior to processing your orders and running the turn, you could in theory savescum the hell out of the game and have optimal outcomes for every important engagement. I dunno how fun this would be though.

Just you all know, Slitherine games, including War in the East, are now on mid-week sale on Steam. Now they are affordable, and even War in the East is down 70 % to the reasonable 23 Euros.

I'm an alien.

I had to look up what LSV meant, and ouch, you just sunk one of the two ships of that designation that were built during the war. The designation LSV stands for Landing Ship, Vehicle so I'd imagine that you just made amphibious landings in the South Pacific much harder to pull off, and doubly so now that you've also gotten confirmed kills on two APAs.

It’s the other way around. The Allies landed 250 guys, who did a forced shock attack due to landing on an atoll.

I believe those are only the losses directly caused by the attack. The losses from the ship sinking afterward are counted separately.

The combat reports are a bit of a black box and, like almost everything else, are subject to fog of war. I think the generally-accepted view is that the troop casualties shown in a situation like this are the troops that actually died from the hits to the ship, as opposed to troops that died when the ship sank. So here, the 19 vehicles were disabled during the explosion, and then later ended up underwater.

Could easily be wrong, I am still new at the game.

Grimey Drawer
I did wonder for a while if it was the troops and the equipment being counted separately. So, the vehicles might have just sunk but most of the crews were on a different ship or whatever, and because some of them survived they're only disabled

Oh man Operation Charnel House is going to be amazing. 400K defenders vs 165K attackers.

I'm actually surprised they have nearly as many guns there as Grey does. I thought this was supposed to just be a lot of really green, really hungry freshly spawned divisions.

One of the unavoidable quirks of this game is that the allied production pools and reinforcement system are fixed, so even in a base with zero supply you can still spawn completely intact units from the reinforcement queue. Normally this doesn't manifest itself, as most of the time the locations are at worst Noumea/Pago Pago/Pearl Harbor which are still well behind the frontlines. Since Chungking gets the special reinforcement rule (any defeated Chinese unit respawns there at 1/3 strength a few months after it's destroyed) and is also the center for newly created chinese divisions, you get a ton of historical units there which probably would have never been created if the real city had undergone a 1+ year siege.
