No he wasn't. He did joke about it, but it was clear it a was a joke. For all intents and purposes though working for Nomura was very much the case of working for a weird person. I do recall that... don't know if it was Tabata, but someone mentioned that at like, 2 AM, Nomura would be out all night getting smashed, people would be exhausted or asleep and Nomura would call and be like, "No dude get in here I have a totally sick idea, you gotta see this." And then would basically just scrawl it all out on a whiteboard.

In short Nomura was often smashed off his rear end when he came up with a lot of stuff for his games.

That's extremely disappointing.

Yeah turns out most "Developers be CRAZY" stories are usually things taken extremely out of context, typically because it's read in text form and not viewed. It's very clear when watching the actual interview, from the fact they're laughing about it like "Hey man remember that time I saw Les Mis and couldn't get it out of my head, Ha HA" and less "Okay let's scrap all our work and make it like Les Mis."

Well, its more interesting than "So I spent 2 days figuring out why the game is crashing, it ends up I was forgot to initiate a pointer. I fixed it by changing one line of code" Gamedev is work done by people like anything else, and you get stories just like anywhere else.

The best FF dev story is still the guy who made Ultima suck in FF2 because 'it was an old spell and newer stuff would be more powerful' and when Sakaguchi told him to change it refused and altered the code so that no one else knew how to.

This is funny and actually pretty common with technically skilled people who get into a position because they are really good at certain things and it covers the fact that for example they are poo poo with people

Especially when people making the decisions do not technically understand how to do it and there's a disagreement and they just ignore orders

Semi-related to this page of discussion I started playing 9 for the first time like 2 years ago after I grabbed a copy off amazon and got to the end of disc 1 before stopping, but picked it back up again yesterday.

Still only like halfway through disc 2 but if it keeps being as cool & good & fun as it has been, it might be my favorite?? I kinda feel robbed having never played it when I was younger because I had a friend who rented it and told me he hated it because the opening hours were so slow but his favorite one is 8 so I should have known his opinion was never worth listening to

I can understand not liking FF9 (actually I can't but w/e) but 'slow' is not how I would describe it's opening act.

My only gripe with FF9 is that you can't make up a party you want to roll with until disc 3. Otherwise yeah it's pretty fantastic and fun and both the main and supporting cast are great.

E: And Tetra Master sucks and is confusing, at least compared to Triple Triad.

I remember there being a steam version of ff9 at some point, was that a good port or no. I own most of the other ff's but not that one but I don't really wanna buy a mobile port if that's what it is

There are better descriptions in the past few pages but I think it's the best they could have done. I didn't program it so I dunno if they could've managed higher frame rates without a total rewrite and, yes, battle transitions are tedious after a while, but it's totally solid. The character models are generally higher res but the backgrounds are the same res blown up. Some speed and level cheats if you just wanna burn through the story.

9 had a really weird ending imo, the last boss is just a random something pulled from nowhere because they needed a last boss. And overall I kind of remember the tone and ending being kind of nihilisic. But might just be on me not being into downer endings - pretty much why I’m not getting XV even though the gameplay looks fun.

It makes more sense on a replay. Kuja succeeds in blowing up the Crystal and ending the world, but you beat the poo poo out of the Grim Reaper when he comes to collect, reversing the damage and letting life go on as normal. It’s actually a very optimistic ending, give or take Vivi’s death.

ff9's ending is the opposit of nihilistic. in the end, everyone realises that life is worth living and you gotta make the best out of it while you can. not the most creative, sure, but fitting for the game and far from a downer.

The out of nowhere boss was very much intentional as an homage to early FF "true enemy" late game reveals.

It can get hard I guess if you don't understand the job system, I know people have trouble with some of the fights for whatever reason. But those aren't really the game being bad so hmmmm

Oh wait the whole permadeath thing is poo poo, that's def a bad thing about it

I'm playing through it again right now and while it's my personal favorite game of all time, I totally understand all the problems people have with it. Even in the WotL version with all the little enhancements, the UI has a lot of layers and can get confusing and there are useful improvements they don't tell you about at all.

Also the difficulty curve is probably the biggest complaint and while I agree, I like hard games and don't mind the grinding, especially since I know how to grind efficiently (make everyone the same class and give them all JP Boost).

There are a few boss fights that are full-on bullshit if you're not expecting them and/or don't know how to deal with them. The Argath fight for example. rear end in a top hat has auto-potion so you have to bring a couple decked out mages and literally bum rush him with spells while ignoring everyone else. That's not intuitive at all.

Then there's the first Wiegraf fight where he has a lot of hp, has ranged sword attacks, and has a high chance of blocking melee attacks. Plus he has monks that can gently caress you up pretty hard.

Currently I'm on the Gaffgarion fight where he pretends to execute a fake Ovelia to lure Ramza into a trap. It's the hardest fight so far because you can't just bum rush Gaffgarion to win. You have to kill everyone and you start outnumbered and in a bad position. Worst part is that you are cut off from shops that sell everything so if you sell off a bunch of stuff (which is common because money is rough early on) before you get there and don't have an old save, you have to make due with your current gear.

I was a little more flippant then I should have been, the game has hard fights. The only fights I'd say are really bad tho are ones like you mentioned, where you're cut off from grinding or upgrading equipment.

The good things you heard about World of Final Fantasy are accurate, just power through the opening acts because Tama's speech quirk and the overall tone can be get unbearably cloying but it tapers off pretty fast.
