No, but the person who was interim manager for the dev department after the last one got canned just got a bottle of 21 year old scotch as a thank you for managing us through a tough period where we were understaffed and overcommitted. Wouldn't it be smarter to run the sandbox with basically guest permissions, and pass a yes/no pass/fail code back to the kernel level AV process? Or am I missing something about how the sandbox doesn't actually touch system files, but needs kernel access to them to fake it?

It's a tricky balance with sandboxing malware for analysis purposes, they often look for evidence of being run in a sandbox or VM and that defeats the point when you're trying to detect their actions.

Gonna have to try this, Knob Creek is my default at this point.

I tried the Bird Dog brand Chocolate whiskey last night, didn't really have high expectations because it was pretty cheap but it actually tastes really good. A bit too chocolatey to drink very much straight but would make a great mixer. I've seen people online discussing using it in place of Kahlua.

Our updated drug and alcohol policy came out today. Now I could have been punished for bringing egg nog to the office to give to my coworkers. On the other hand, they now said that drugs in the system are punishable by their legal status in their locality, which might mean pot is okay in CO? Not going to test it, though. I feel like that might have been intentionally vague.

I wouldn't push it. I live in a state where medical is legal, yet, because the place I work gets Fed funding, even with a script, if I fail a random, I am unemployed.

Yeah, not worth it.

I’ve never been at a place that does randoms. We probably do at construction sites, but I think nobody wants to spend the money and risk having to fire a good employee in the office. Kind of a Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell unless someone gets injured or could hurt someone.

My father in law is retiring from Broadcom this year and apparently they had to start doing randoms because they got a reputation for not doing them and got some really weird people who would gently caress stuff up in the manufacturing clean rooms.

Sorry to disappoint, I learned my lesson with Symantec after experiencing what they did to Backup Exec and have stayed far far away from anything with their name on it. (I can't tell you how pissed I am at Digicert for buying Symantec's cert business - Digicert is one of the best companies I've ever dealt with and I have nightmares that they'll be brought down to Symantec's level by that acquisition). We use ESET for the clients that we need to install AV on, and it's...OK. It's not great, but it mostly gets out of the way and isn't too resource intensive. But still. Ugh.

Ahhh gotcha, I think I mentioned it before but SEP isn't as bad now (from my experience), it mostly stays the gently caress out of the way and does what we want it to do, the v11 days were a dark time, but the renaissance has come with 12.1.5; we are in the promised time of low resource utilization and lack of false positives amen.

Defender ATP is actually good, but you kinda need to have an all Windows 10 environment, and already have O365 for it to be worthwhile.

If you meet that criteria though, I don't think any other endpoint AV can beat it.

Why do I root for Notre Dame? Because I like pain, and disappointment, and anguish. Notre Dame Football has destroyed more dreams than the Irish Potato Famine, and that is the kind of suffering I can get behind.
For the last several weeks I've been hammering the virtual job boards. Got myself several phone interviews and one in-person. Two of the phone interviews resulted in job offers. The first one was semi-local, but it was contingent upon contract award, with the earliest projected start date two months out. I declined that one almost immediately. Second one was tempting, with a salary of $96k, but would involve at least a one hour commute in each direction. That one was a tough choice, but I heard back from the in-person interview and they also wanted to make me an offer.

The company that did the in-person is highly respected, has a ton of opportunities, indicated that they would probably sponsor me for a TS the day I start, and more importantly my best friend has worked for them for 25 years and respects the hell out of his co-workers and supervisors.

Anyways, once I heard all that I went ahead and turned down the other offer and waited for the offer to arrive. And waited. And waited. And waited. Almost two weeks I waited, but finally the offer letter arrived yesterday. Pay was a bit less than the one offering me $96k, but it was more than what I was making at my previous position, and with all the merit stuff I'll get after the first year I can easily be making close to the magic six-figure number in two years, which works just fine for me.

I start on Monday, and my friend went and spoke with my supervisor and got the skinny on some of the work I'll be doing. Oh boy, I'm going to have some fun.

The last few weeks have been extremely stressful. I didn't mention it, but I started building a house back in September. I was due to close on it yesterday. Everything looked like it was going into the toilet, but my uncle offered to be the co-signer on the loan, but then when I got word of the job offer the lender decided I didn't need a co-signer so long as I had the offer letter. So for the last week and a half I've gotten emails, text messages and phone calls asking me if I got the offer letter yet or when I could expect it. That stressed me out more than not having a job. And when I finally got the offer letter the underwriter said it wasn't good enough because of the contingencies, stating that I could lose the job between yesterday and when I start on Monday, despite the fact that the HR Specialist assured them that I had gone from candidate to employee in the personnel system and that the contingencies were just part of the legal verbiage the company puts on all of it's offer letters.

My response was not very mature, but at least I didn't blow up at the lender or the underwriter. It ticked me off to no end that every hoop they presented I jumped through. Every condition they set, I met. Every requirement for documentation or explanation I produced quickly. They wanted an offer letter - I got it. Generally the process took several weeks, but I got the company to push things through (although admittedly they were motivated both because they wanted to improve the speed of the hiring process and because a number of high-level folks pushed to get me hired ASAP). Since the offer letter wasn't good enough, the only way to do things properly, the underwriter stated oh so piously, was to wait until after I started and then doing employment verification.

So I start on Monday, and my closing is set for Tuesday. And each day after the 28th that I don't close on the house costs me $100 in per diem penalties. I snapped the head off the construction supervisor for whining that missing the closing date cost him a couple hundred dollars in bonus money - it definitely wasn't what I wanted, and I'm losing a hell of a lot more money than he is.

It looks, however, like things are finally going to work out. I get to work on some really interesting projects for a company I've been dying to work at for the last 15 years or so. I also get to work with my best friend. I'm going to have my own office. I'm making more money. I hope my pod has a top-notch nutrient system...
