PST posted:Destiny has had huge sales, to the point that popularity is limiting growth because of supply issues. Yes. Another thing I'd point out is that I don't necessarily think the Star Wars LCG was unsuccessful. It ran for 6 years and released $850 or so of SKUs. I've heard a retailer say that they would do brisk sales in both the SW LCG and LOTR LCG, but never have anyone show up to events (so they stopped running them). There's a big part of the buyers market there that are buying things to play at home and never bring it into a store. The story of whether games are successful is something of a network economy. Games/systems are more valuable to consumers when all their friends are playing the same one. In most markets where there are strong network effects, there's space for 1 or 2 players to be huge and cover 95% of the market and the rest of the little guys fight over the last 5%. I think part of why X-Wing and Destiny were so successful is because there wasn't a clear incumbent in that exact same genre they were challenging or displacing. X-Wing isn't exactly a replacement for a 6x4 infantry tactics game. D&D Attack Wing, Wings of War and Star Trek Attack Wing were sorta non-factors anyway. It exists in a sort of genre that is between a few others, and is different enough from each that they can pull in player interest. What's Destiny's market? Probably closest to a CCG like Magic or Pokemon, but with the dice element feels different enough from those?

I'm very curious to see how Legion does for them. It's obviously their bid for 40k players, but its chances would have been substantially better two years ago - when GW was still in the incapable hands of their mad CEO. Now it looks poised to be another overpriced also-ran in a crowded field.

They've said she'll still be involved as a freelancer and on stuff like Cavaliers of Mars, which is her game like Pugmire is Eddy Webb's. They hired on two other folks full-time when she left, but they likely are not as cool as Rose is.

Rose Bailey was in charge of spearheading the Scion revision, wasn't she? Is that all wrapped up then, or did she hand it off to someone else?

Neall's been working pretty hard on the same stuff; I look forward to seeing the manuscript, which we were hoping to get for Hero before March.

There has been a tremendous effort to show respect and deference to the original cultures that worshipped or currently worship these gods. IIRC this has resulted in the Hindu gods being one of the bigger holdups, to make sure they were done just right. It also means the Egyptian gods are using their Egyptian names rather than the Greek ones we mostly know them by.

I really like Rose Bailey's games/design sense and I'm invested enough in the nWoD system to like the fact that she was involved in them but at the same time I'm excited to see what she develops on her own (even if Cavaliers of Mars looks a little rules-light for me.)

It was a nightmare for the Egyptian gods, let alone the Hindu ones - Egyptian religion has all the stable canon of a long-running comic book franchise. And re: using Egyptian names with the Greek ones as secondary. Yeah, you're welcome. I am wholly outclassed in specialist knowledge compared to some of Scion's writers, but I'm more than a layman about Egypt, got anal about it, and badgered Neall until he changed them.

I'll second the love for Bast's write-up. I love her as Ra's dogsbody (...perhaps ironically) who drinks a lot because of the amount of crap she has to do for her dad. She'll make a fun mom for some Scion.

Pretty much the only pantheon that's anywhere near as clearly delineated as the typical TTRPG example is the Greek one. And even that is largely due to two layers of obsessive categorization and rationalization (first the Academy and then the Romans) that came in long after the basic structure of the mythos was laid out.

You'd think Hinduism would be more categorized now since it's the largest polytheistic religion that managed to survive until today but I guess the fact that there is no central authority for it makes it hard.

hyphz posted:If it was just “you need other people to play” then board games would have the same problem. It’s more about pre-investment (CCGs and minis) and long term commitment (RPGs). I know a fair number of game club organisers who hate RPGs because they create isolated closed groups of players for every meeting for months on end. The funny thing about RPGs is that they could totally be organized like board games where it's 2-6 hours of people at a table with their character sheets, their resolution system of choice and whatever visual or textual aids that they need with single sessions being more or less one and done things. This is the sort of culture Japan has with their RPGs where, rather than having a series of shorter sessions over the course of months or years, it's one or two extended sessions that go from start to finish. You can see this in the Double Cross and Tenra Bnasho books that got translated as they explain the general flow of a game where, in the former, players are totally expected to burn themselves out and go out with a bang by the end of the session as part of the climax. This is built into the system and written as the intended mode of play. The Western RPG campaign style, in a sense, operate like the long running series that are the norm in the US which are generally run until a conclusion is forced by external events or because every just gets bored and wants to move one. It doesn't necessarily have to be that way, but it is
