Does it sound like that part in Goldfish where they break out into really noisy guitar and drums for like 10s because that's my favorite part of the entire album

There's that one really unhinged bit in Only Acting, but the rest of the album is quite a bit of a departure from their past style, while still managing to have the same whimsical charm to it. It's only 4 tracks long and you can take it all in within less than 15 minutes. Each track doesn't really have the same cohesive style to it, which is a little jarring, but not in a bad way. The One True Path is pretty chill with a heavy bass beat in the background, with some noise put in here and there, with a really nice ending. In its album version, Only Acting is the sound of Bubblegum Pop Losing its Innocence. It starts off like something spot on with their old style and... well, just listen to it. The You Know How It Is has a very garage-band-ish sound to it that I love to pieces. Cinema probably has the most similar style to their past music (not counting Only Acting), but trades sugary peppiness for a more dulcet, melancholy tone. I love this one a lot too.

Wow I was so hype for this album already and this exceeded my wildest hopes. Both tracks are incredible. Janelle Monáe is a loving genius.

I think it'll need to grow on me a little like The Electric Lady did before I'm in love with it (ArchAndroid Janelle is still my favorite by a long shot), but good GOD this woman is amazing in how she can just take any style and loving own it, both musically and fashionwise. By far one of the greatest artists of this generation.

She never holds to one specific style on any album she's had so far, so surely there'll be something you like. In fact, the fact that she changes it up and has full-on different genres of music in each album is one thing I love about her. It never gets stale.

My favorite songs of hers, Many Moons, Tightrope, and Yoga, are all musically different. Plus this is probably the best lyric of 2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OkB6p_FZAw&t=110s

Not to heap too much praise on her, but I really feel like Janelle Monáe could be this generation's David Bowie. She could easily dominate the pop world if she wanted to, but instead she's carving out her own niche and doing all this lofty stuff that would seem pretentious if it weren't so drat good.

I've been a fan since "The ArchAndroid," and I love how her career has finally exploded, between her excellent acting and people realizing she's one of our most talented pop stars (although she totally transcends "pop star"). I had tickets to see her a few years back, but my wife was sick and didn't want to go, I couldn't find anyone to buy them, so I had to give them to a co-worker who eventually ended up being difficult to work with. Hopefully I'll get another chance some time. I imagine she's terrific live. I'm just kind of surprised she wasn't in Black Panther, considering she's been drenched in Afro-futurism long before the phrase or style were commonly known.

Cross-posting from the hip-hop thread since we don't really have a soul/r&b thread. Would really appreciate people giving some support to a local artist who is very talented. A local Sacramento artist just released his debut album and I have been jamming to it all day. He goes by The Philharmonik and his style is a combination of Neo-Soul, R&B, and Hip-Hop. He plays piano/keyboards, sings, raps, and did all of the production on this album. He plays a lot of live gigs in the area and is a talented performer as well. I know this isn't true hip-hop so feel free to skip if it isn't your thing but would definitely appreciate the support and if you do give it a listen, let me know what you think! The night didn't get off to a great start because the arena basically treated Tove Styrke like a sound check and it was awful. For the whole of her first song they weren't even piping the instruments into the arena and didn't do anything about it until she said something. I don't think they actually got the sound balance right until like the second-last song of her set. I felt terrible for her, that must've been a super awkward performance

After having to pay well over 100 dollars to have a decent view that isn't on some dumb rear end angle in the stands, the sound quality is always trash. I'm hoping to scoop up a ticket on the cheap around the day of it from people bailing.

And the angle we had to sit at sucked rear end for sure.

Meghan Trainor is back and while the song is kinda catchy her lyrics are still the pop equivalent of that one woman on your Facebook feed who posts all of those "sassy" memes that make you roll your eyes about how she's a queen and should be treated as such it's not as bad as Dear Future Husband but that might be the worst pop song of the last 10 years so low bar.

i had a weird moment where I realized just how much pop radio has changed today. I was going out to lunch with my family and my sister was driving her car, so we were listening to one of the Top 40 stations that I always listened to when I was younger, and it was remarkable to me how little hip hop there was. I don't actually listen to the radio any more, haven't in a long time (at least since I got a device to plug my phone into my car stereo), but when I was younger the reason I discovered some of the first hip-hop songs that I really liked was because of one of the two Top 40 stations that we were in range of. Stronger was the start of actually going out and seeking rap albums to listen to, aside from Eminem, but I definitely have memories of hearing Ja Rule and Ludacris and Lil Jon and Outkast when they were in their prime but today I spent a solid hour and a half listening to that radio station and the only hip-hop I heard was Bruno Mars/Cardi B and that NF guy who apparently used to be a christian rapper? No Drake or Kendrick despite both of them having incredibly radio friendly singles out right now. God's Plan is like the biggest song in the world it's amazing that it didn't pop up. I blame it on living in the Midwest and on iHeartRadio, which is bankrupt and good loving riddance honestly. I would love to know exactly when that change happened. edit: also in more immediate news, Taylor Swift wised up and released her second best song off of Reputation as a single. Delicate is great. Now lets get Don't Blame Me out there and forget about the first three singles. DC Murderverse fucked around with this message at 21:28 on Mar 16, 2018 |

Maybe not at this very moment, but hip hop has definitely been a significant part of top 40 music for the last few years. Hell, 2 of the 5 Grammy nominees for Record of the Year are straight up rap, Redbone is soul/R&B, and 24K Magic is funk/disco. On a related note, I was listening back to the melody of the chorus hear, and it really reminded me of Ellie Goulding's "Love Me Like You Do". Turns out Ellie was a writer on this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj6k-EFxqAI Josh Lyman fucked around with this message at 18:29 on Mar 17, 2018 |

I heard this on the radio yesterday and it immediately struck me as a contender for song of the summer with a huge potential for remixing like Shape of You. Then I discovered the song was released on September 8, 2017. I wonder why it never caught on it's because of the completely sabotaging Florida Georgia Line half-verse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ_0QLL2gqI

Most of the top 40 these days is hip hop, top 40 radio just won't play it because most of it is too "street" for racist companies like iHeartRadio that think white peoples' heads will explode if they hear a rap verse on a Maroon 5 song. I'm glad that iHeartRadio/ClearChannel is dying, even though I'm sure all the stations they own will probably get bought out by someone shittier or shut down permanently. Maybe they could have avoided this if they played the music that was actually popular and not their outdated ideas of what music they think "should" be popular.
