Not sure I've seen this, but I've definitely run into a bug where the Copa America just stops happening. Ruined a Chilean save for me.

Yeah, AI can fail that.

I've been watching some really nerdy YouTube videos recently where a guy just edits stuff for fun and sims the game to see what happens. In one of them, he gave a non league team £1b and at one point, they won the League Cup, but weren't in Europe the next year.

Here's the channel if anyone's interested:

How do I run a 5-3-2 or a 5-3-1-1 in fm?

Effort posts appreciated

I've really struggled to get a strike partnership working this year, but I've actually got a decent 5 at the back going with a DLP-D, BWM-S in midfield, 2 AP-A ahead of them and an AF leading the line. DLP should be able to ping passes about and decent positionally to break up counters, BWM is your destroyer but will also get forward and smack them from the edge of the area so an ability to finish is really useful there, and the AP should be pacey and able to beat a man 1 on 1 (high dribbling, flair, creativity etc). They'll float inside and out and kinda act like inside forwards, finding gaps between center backs and fullbacks. I've been using a Libero as the central man in the back line to give an extra body in midfield when attacking too, it owns but you can't play an offside trap ever at all with it cos you won't have a flat back line.

Alot of tactics I see run DLP (D) and BWM (S)....why? I kind of thought the other way would synergize better. Like dlp (s) to allow him to float around and pass and act as a recycler and bwm (d) would make him stay back, shield the back 4 and go get stuck in on anyone attempting a counter

I couldn't figure out how to upload a youtube of it but I just had my striker score a goal where the keeper just...didn't kick the ball, and he walked up, took it from the keeper, and kicked it in the net.

BWM-D is very aggressive in closing down and as a lone holding player will get destroyed on the counter. He'll charge upfield to make a tackle and be taken out with a single pass. It's a destroyer role, not a defensive/holding one.

DLP-D on the other hand is very passive. and will retreat along with the defensive line, restricting space for fast counters to play in to. They also drift more when in possession, following the play from deep, making them a much more effective outlet and putting themselves in a better defensive position after turnovers, picking up runners and cutting off passing lanes.

BWM are only good in dedicated high press systems. Tackling is only a minor part of ball-winning in football, and despite the name that's all the role specialises in.

This is 100% correct, plus if you have a bwm-d and dlp-s then neither of them will actually get forward enough to be a threat with late runs into the box ever, but the other way round will see your bwm bundle a few into the net every season even if they can't finish at all, just by virtue of them smashing around in that space knocking everyone over.

e. if you want a midfielder to sit back and protect the back 4 and kick people in that space, use a regista iirc

I'm using a 4-2-3-1 with actual wingers on support and an AP (A) behind an AF (A)

I want to use IF but am I right in thinking that it would cause spacing issues And my AF/CF (A) would struggle to do anything or contribute due to spacing and not being fed the ball? Like hypothetically 4 players with attack duty seems bad....I could switch the top of my midfield triangle from an AP (A) to S but I have a dlp who I kind of think does enough midfield support idk

Like the use of two IF (A) would require a support role out of my lone striker up top but he's one of the best players on the squad so I def want him attack and aggressive

There's not a big difference between the attacking positioning of AP-A and AP-S.

AP-A runs with the ball, but not without it as an AM-A is instructed to do. They're still supposed to make themselves available for passes between the lines (although their extra attacking mentality can cause issues in certain setups).

That's the exact setup I use, IF-A AP-A IF-A behind an AF-A. I agree that 4 players on attack seems like an overload but I don't have too much expectation on my fullbacks to get forward, and dropping any of those 4 into a support role sees them slip into that horrible space in FM where they just smash long shots wide all day instead of either driving forward with the ball, or waiting for support. All of the 4 have really good dribbling though so it kinda works like Man City just running riot constantly up front.

I'm playing a pretty attacking 4231. The biggest thing that I've noticed is that the AI bloody loves playing proper center forwards on the wing, and that players with poo poo passing will still hit a 70 yard cross field ball directly onto a teammates foot on a counter so shoehorning as many strikers into the front line as you can is pretty effective. Plus, same as every year, it's really really hard to find regens with high flair + creativity.

Anyone want a rundown of how the footballing world looks in 2024?

Yeah ok.

Mourinho won the Premier League with United in 17/18, backed it up the next year after signing Virgil van Dijk, Yannick Carrasco and Sime Vrsaljko for big money. He then won a third title in a row in 19/20 with Xherdan Shaqiri starring and earning himself a $100 mil transfer to Barcelona. Pep led Manchester City to second in 17/18, and was sacked the next season after finishing 4th. He was replaced by Carlo Ancelotti, who led them to an even worse 6th. They are currently managed by Zinedine Zidane, after he was sacked in 2022 by Liverpool inside of a year of his hiring, with them in an impressive 14th. Liverpool's best result was in 18/19, finishing 3rd, but somehow 6 years later they still have Salah, Firmino and Coutinho on their books, with Sane having only left after the disastrous Zidane season. Liverpool might have been trash that season, but Arsenal got good again, Wenger finally wining the title again, and immediately loving off to Bayern where he was sacked after 282 days, with them in 4th. Wenger's season might have been bad at Bayern, but he's not the only bad manager they've had, as 2 years earlier Zidane had managed them to an equally disappointing 4th place finish.

Swansea won the FA Cup in 2018 while getting relegated, something West Brom failed to live up to in 2024, losing the final to Man Utd while still getting relegated.

Chinese teams are still buying adequate players for big money, with Serge Aurier, Kevin Wimmer and Marko Arnautovic all moving there from the Premier League, along with countless other middling talents from top flight clubs.

I've managed West Ham this entire time, where Mark Noble finally captained the team to a league title in 22/23, retiring at the end of that season. Our best player is Thembile Slawula, a South African born Portuguese international regen who is already loved by the club on the level of Bobby Moore, having scored the winner in that title winning season, the goal to win the 2022 FA Cup, and the 2024 Champions League, and having averaged at least a goal every other game since he was 18.

On the international scene, Brazil won the 2018 World Cup over Spain, while the 2022 World Cup was moved to Australia, and Croatia was led to victory over Belgium by Ismet Fejzic, a distinctly championship level striker I'd farmed out on loan to Ligue 2. England scored the most goals, had the player with the most assists (Andre Green), had a player win the golden ball (Reece Oxford), kept the most clean sheets in 2022 (Jordan Pickford), but got annihilated by Spain in the third place match after having lost the semi final on penalties.

The Ballon d'or was won by Messi in 2018, followed by Mbappe, Lemar, Ronald, Mbappe again and is currently held by Moise Kean. The most expensive transfer of all time is still Mbappe to PSG for $271 mil AUD, and since then the biggest is Paulo Dybala from Juve to Man City in Jan 2020 for 218 mil. They also bought Kai Havertz from Leverkusen that January for 141 mil, and they've since won a grand total of 0 club trophies between them.
