If you're talking about a private company's shares that you can actually sell for a healthy profit, talk to a real accountant, other crap like the lifetime capital gains exemption may be in play ... preferably before you sell, particularly if a nontrivial amount of money is in play.

Anything interesting that's public knowledge happened recently with your old startup? On the surface, it doesn't look like it would count as a CCPC as of a few years back which may make that whole section you're looking at not relevant, either...

Has anyone claimed Moving Expenses before? My fiancee and I moved about 250km away in January 2017 for new jobs. I was filling out all the expenses on SimpleTax and I ended up with a 12k deduction mostly made up of legal and real estate fees for selling our old house and buying a new one. That can't be right?

That's not that crazy, the deductions allowed are generous. I've done it but I wasn't buying/selling so my deductions only came to like $3k or so.

I've claimed moving expenses a couple times, both got reviewed (and allowed), though one large employer said they'd never been asked for a letter confirming they'd paid zero in relocation before (the cheapskates...)

Goddamnit, I know it's officially tax season since I had a stack of receipts on my desk to add up, and I sit there wondering how people can spend so much money (or any at all) on homeopathy.

Did you purchase the shares originally using a company stock option, or are they regular shares? The deduction you're talking about there is only on employment income for exercising stock options. It doesn't affect capital gains at all.

The only exemption you get on capital gains are on qualified small business shares and farm/fishing property. I forget the exact number, but it's slightly more than $800k.

My problems were pretty minute (a couple grand one way or another), but oh my god they're a hassle to deal with, and every time someone touches them they just get more screwed up.

And I haven't worked there in nearly two years. Goddamn.

Goodbye stealing souls, hello stealing booty.
Can anyone recommend a good daily use credit card? I'm with tangerine right now, but since they dropped the cash back rates I've soured on it.

Are any of the travel cards worth it without going through hardcore churning route?

poo poo, I just realized I really need to get on replacing my Amazon card asap.

For foreign currency transactions, Home trust visa and Fido are probably the best free ones.

Home trust Visa is 1% cash back on all transactions and no foreign currency transaction fee

Fido MC gives you 4% cash back on foreign transactions, but you still pay a 2.5% transaction fee. So practically 1.5% cash back. Note: If you buy something with the Fido card but refund it, you will get dinged a 2.5% transaction fee on the refund as Fido takes back their 4% cash back.

I applied about a month ago and haven't heard a peep from them. I ended up going to http://www.greedyrates.ca/ and just finding a card I liked from there, which is partially how I found the amazon.ca card we all liked before.

I do a lot of shopping at Superstore and the combo of 3% back on their World Elite Mastercard at their stores (Shoppers, No frills, Esso, etc) and the "PC Optimum" points/coupon system gets me at least $20/month back on stuff I'm already buying.

I picked up the BMO World Master Elite Air Miles or whatever its called and I've been pretty happy with it. Between that card and shopping for the specials at Sobey's I've racked up 2000 Air Miles since the beginning of December.

BajaHAHAHA.

I've been happy with the MBNA world elite or whatever it's called. $89 fee but waived for the first year plus $100 sign up bonus means pretty much free for the first two years. 2% back on everything with no limit, can be redeemed as statement credit with a minimum of $50 redemption.

Haven't found a better cashback card than that so far.

E: anybody have any suggestions for better cash back cards? Some of the newer offers seem to be getting better but it still seems like Canadians get shafted on rewards cards

The Fido card for US purchases is pretty good, but thing to note is that if you don't have a rogers or Fido service then you have to call before December to request a cash back cheque. The statement credit throughout the year can only be applied to rogers and Fido charges. .

On the topic of taxes, the university I work for decided last year to stop deducting income tax on T4A fellowship income. This is good for students, since they shouldn't be paying tax on that money, but lovely for post-docs, since we are required to pay tax on our fellowships. Unfortunately the university codes these the same, and just stopped deducting tax for everyone. I had to start an email chain that elevated up to the university head of finance in order to get them to start deducting income tax again, which they eventually did in December.

Anyway, it made my taxes fun this year, since I had to estimate what I owed for the half of the year I wasn't being taxed. Thankfully I overestimated, so had some extra savings to toss into my TFSA. I'm genuinely worried about other post-docs who may not be as responsible, though.

So, this is peripherally finance related in one of the few Canada threads on the forum.

I was wondering, does anyone have any experience with private "executive" healthcare facilities in Canada? Particularly Vancouver, but I'd settle for hearing about wherever else... I'm beginning to get annoyed, despite a high threshold, at my GP and several specialists for wasting my time with pointless follow-up visits stringing me along for months before doing additional referrals or ordering more expensive (govt covered) tests and am flirting with whether this might be a less annoying route to take.

This is kind of driven by a ongoing undiagnosed health issue, but more generally my past experience with private surgeries is that, private care being optional, you absolutely get the better service you're paying for.

Sorry for the late response. My father uses https://www.copemanhealthcare.com/ and seems happy with them.

Much appreciated, there are only a couple of them here but positive reviews never hurt!

Since my last post, I've been to the doctor yet again and strung along to make another visit to address the referral I need (that will be #4 since "I really think I should do a referral re: thing")

Each of these visits is two hours of my time, such bullshit.

That's really unfortunate. The system being free (for the most part) does lead to some bottlenecks and while I work in acute care I certainly see enough of the outpatient stuff to know it's not ran very efficiently.

I'm happy to help if you have any questions about terminology or certain tests etc, just PM me. I won't be able to help you get anything done faster though. Respiratory stuff is my specialty.

Aren’t three of those funds overlapping? You have Canada, US, and North America. Why not just get one total market fund?

My thinking was some more aggressive movement in the US Div fund and a bit of hedging against US market in the Canada fund. Maybe that makes no sense.

If I wanted more dividend exposure I might go with a bond fund, dividend fund, and total world ex canada. It depends if you want exposure to Canada and whether you want overweighted exposure to the US.

Personally I am VAB and VXC

I do want some exposure to Canada directly, to capitalize on its occasional moves out of pace with US market. Plan would be to still rebalance after those periods as usual.

I don't know that I wanted more exposure to dividends so much as I wanted exposure to those stocks in that fund as a sort of blue chip group at the higher end of the total market. Thoughts on that?

VXC is nice excluding Canada, but VIU excluded North America and seems like a good bet to capture global exposure when the US is out of pace, as Canada is just tied to US market so intimately anyway.
