Being able to drop anywhere can be really strong but it can also backfire horribly if you don't think about how the AI will react. His ability is useless in the final mission though so yeah he's not the appealing.

If there was a time traveler that let you redo your initial deployment before making your move I'd probably use them a lot. My biggest problem is thinking "yeah this deployment will work perfectly" then I realize I overlooked something and am completely hosed.

The damage is negligible but if you can body block movement its great. Do you not click on enemies to see where their available movement is?

I think the Wave1 Reset Turn should just let you do this tbf. first wave is one of the less hectic compared to saving it for biggy mistakes in later waves so you'd be sacrafising your reset for maybe better deployment vs having it to save for "oh poo poo it just took out that research lab objective!!"

But yeah Gana should really be a free ability.

nah, you can switch to any of the other pilots you've unlocked, but the only way to keep skills and level is to send someone back and use them the following game.

More than a few times I've had a turn there where I looked at all the aliens stacked up against me and thought "how the gently caress am I gonna run this", but then ended up finding a clever way that lets everyone get out safely.

It sounds like things are spiraling out of control. You have to sort all the enemies on the field into these priorities:

--Threats to your objectives.
--Threats to your grid.
--Unavoidable, lethal threats to your mechs.
--Avoidable or non-lethal threats to your mechs.

All three of your mechs should be canceling at least one of these every round, and more than one whenever possible. Psions and incoming Vek will yo-yo up and down in importance, depending on the circumstances. Sometimes you can ignore a Psion for a round, sometimes they have to die first before you can get anything done.

Man, I unlocked all the pilots really quickly apart from two. Lily Reed and Archimedes, on the wiki/forums people are saying you have to get a perfect on each island to for certain pilots to appear in time pods/as rewards, if that's true then I am still just having terrible luck because I have definitely gotten a perfect island on all 4 at some point and they have just not appeared. Still not seen any of the cracked mountains/ice tiles either.

I've never thought about how far enemies can move, or trying to block their movement. I've just been assuming they can pretty much go wherever they want and reacting to whatever happens.

Worked out fine so far.

I still don't know how to properly deploy my mechs or if it even matters a whole lot because it feels like the Vek just go wherever they want anyway.

Hwurmp
May 20, 2005

For artillery, pick a row near the top sides of the map where they can move straight across as freely as possible. Other mechs should be closer to the front, but at least 4 squares away from any scorpions that can web them up and limit your starting options.

I know leapers & spiders can web too, but I don't know any easy way to prevent that yet. They're just a pain in the dick.

The way energy pylons deploy completely at random right after you have placed your mechs in the two final missions is bullshit. Since I understand that full manual placement would be waaay overpowered, I just wish they would give you a choice out of two or three possible 'patterns' during the deployment phase.

And yeah, I did just lose a perfect game to this, grrr.

If you Perfect an island you will be offered a choice of three free items: one free weapon, one free pilot, +2 grid. These are just extra rolls for pilots to appear, nothing more. They don't unlock special pilots. The non-special pilots are random at all stages so it's just about getting enough rolls to find them all. For me personally Abe was the last one to find despite everyone going "Oh god this guy is so good, he gives armor to any mech he's on!"

The FTL pilots are found under mountains. Shoot mountain, there might be a glowing beacon in it. If there is, destroy mountain, grab beacon and an FTL pod crashes on the map. FTL pod follows same rules as normal pods in terms of needing to be protected, but then come with 1 of the 3 FTL pilots (rock, mantis, zoltan) in them.

OK, Frozen Titans are completely ridiculous with Bethany (I assume with the Zoltan it's even more silly). Being able to mostly delete an enemy from the map regardless of HP every turn is super-strong. I can see things being more involved without a shield pilot since then you have to set up damage to remove the ice if you want to keep up the pace. With Bethany I often burned through the shield to block a spawn, but it was really nice to have the option of ignoring the self-ice entirely.

The Janus Cannon is often a double-edged sword, but I had fun with it. It turns out that if you use it to break a dam, the subsequent drowning kills count for Trick Shot.

So, tried out the secret team.

Gotta say, they don't really have much variety in how they play from round to round. Extra cost for using even the most basic gear, no pilot choice to change things up. They pretty much just want cores, which makes equipping them much less fun.

Neat to have them, but I don't think I'll be making much use of 'em.

I went for Archive first because it had multiple low-HP Vek types invading it. Figured I could just path my way around the defense missions, but the train defense one ended up being straight up mandatory this time around.

Honestly though, I feel like Archive isn't really unique in terms of terrible Blitzkrieg missions. R.S.T. has the Renfield Bombs and Terraformer (the one that fills up a chasm and doesn't kill everything in a 2x3 grid, not sure what it's called), while Pinnacle has multiple Defend the Robots types of missions.

It's called the 'Earth Mover' in the objectives iirc.

My feeling is that it's not that Archive is unique in terms of escort missions, but that they're a bit more prevalent.

Yeah, I suppose Archive (and Pinnacle) does have the most linear mission layout, which increases the odds of being forced to do certain mission types.

I still prefer to avoid starter islands with 5+ HP Alpha Veks on them though, even if that forces you to go Archive first.
