Shitey web apps are pissing me off.
Trying to sort out one i particular that only works in IE, in compatibility mode, added to trusted sites, when Jupiter is in ascension etc etc
Almost every computer I've tested on just throws an error saying the acivex objects couldn't be created and I can't figure out what is different between those that work and those that don't

I got it working on a VM and now I'm seriously considering getting the users to just RDP to that. There's only like three of them sharing the same account anyway. :effort:

This if for an EU government agency. The last shitey web app to piss me off was also a major government agency (in the US) that required a very specific and completely obsolete version of Java.

Having no budget to maintain my personal IT poo poo is currently pissing me off.

I've been keeping my tape backup server limping along over the years (in addition to offsite backups to Glacier) but for some reason my install of BackupExec 2010 started throwing E0008821 errors and crashing the BackupExec service. And for some reason, maybe it being the fact that the program is seven years old.

Google says that the E0008821 error means that services aren't started which is the biggest no poo poo moment ever, but there are no clues as to why the service is unexpectedly halting in the first place when it ran fine for months after the initial install.

Anyone have any good recommendations for a free or cheap backup solution that'll backup to LTO3 tape? Bonus if it has virtual tape library capability.

Veeam is king if your system is compatible and you're OK with the options they give you.

If you want full configurability, Amanda Community lets you do anything. But it is command-line-only and is somewhat obtuse even for that antiquated design ethos.

This, Veeam is loving king, I think it has issues really scaling up, though I've never run into problems, we back up ~60 VMs with it. We don't do tape so I'm not sure if there are pitfalls there.

The best answer I ever got as to why would you do this thing, was "we didn't like it."

I now use something called Altaro and it's.... well it's okay. I want Veeam back though.

Can confirm Veeam works pretty sweet with tapes too. I've only used direct file to tape, but it does a pretty nice job of things.

I'm never worried with Veeam. I still do quarterly tests but I've used Veeam at several places and Veeam has always let me know if it ran into an issue backing up. If it says a backup is good I've never had it not be good. (Always test your backups!)

It's just the peace of mind knowing it's doing what it's saying and I don't have to worry about it. Veeam will sometimes throw a warning about a single VM not being accessible but it makes it into the next backup, never multiple backups straight in my experience unless something is actually wrong.

You can use Veeam ONE to monitor last good backup and alert you of all of this before it's a problem. Veeam ONE is also a great tool in general. I really like the overview of my entire infrastructure and quickly seeing which hosts are near capacity (or over).

We had a fairly wide-spread issue with our wireless access today. Due to the nature of service desk work, we got 5 or 6 different reports which all ended up being about the same issue. So, the guy actually handling it closed all the duplicates and kept one master ticket, because our ticketing system doesn't allow linking tickets.

The part that pisses me off is our tech guy dedicated to one building on the other side of town says "Hey, you closed this but we still have the issue."

Us: Sorry, mate. We're tracking it through a master ticket because it turns out it's not just you guys.

Him: We’re advised not to close tickets if the issues still persist.

Motherfucker, you know how this system works, it's not even me who chooses to close tickets, the ticket handler marks it as resolved. The part that super pissed me off is he sent his first email to me and the guy handling the ticket. The "don't close tickets" email was only sent to me. So I smacked him down with a "It was a duplicate ticket, and those should always be closed immediately." No response to that.

From this link I see that Veeam Backup Free Edition apparently has tape support, but I've downloaded the Veeam B&R v9.5 and I cannot seem to find the tab where I create a new backup files-to-tape job.

I click on Tape Infrastructure and then File to Tape. I select my target, select Full Backup. When I click on Add New for the Media Pool, It takes me to a space where I'm to add a Tape Library, and the "Add Tape Library" list is blank. This server has a pair of IBM ULTRIUM LTO3 SCSI drives direct attached.

What am I missing?

I just realized I have this problem myself. My desktop has had one piece or another exchanged in a constant state of upgrades since the mid-90s. It's literally the same computer but everything has been replaced a few times. I suspect I'm not alone here.

Anyways I decided to look up my hardware and found that I'm using an 11 year old processor and a 7 year old video card. Time flies.

I think you have to put the tapes in and name them to populate the list and then add the tapes to the pool then you can pick the pool when you set up a job. I know there's some extra stuff you can instal for powershell too, maybe that's the part you need for automating the tape jobs? It's on the Veeam page somewhere and it's pretty simple to set up.

First you need to create the media set and populate with all the tapes you have in your tape library. If the library is not present check for compatibility(some libraries may require a firmware update to bee seen).

Afterwards you need to create a new copy job to mirror the local disk copy to a tape media set. Otherwise the tape library will sit idle. You can execute a copy job on a repository or on a specific backup job. Also you must use the same type of tapes supported by all the drives on the library as you cannot force a drive to use lto4 and another one to run lto5.

I just wonder if everyone needs one? Some salespeople are on the road all the time and could sign into one computer to search for info or put in their sales contacts.

Okay, CEO. Let's save money on the 4 sales people we have by not spending $700/user for a license on each of them. That makes sense.

I'm not sure I'd try to change the mind of an exec who had a tendency towards restricting remote access. That's actually a pretty good trait to have, you just gotta mold them carefully.. like get them to sign off on remote email, but keep the database with all the customer data buried deep inside the lan.

She thinks you'll only steal all our customers if you're on VPN at home. I said you can export a customer list and save it to a USB drive in 5 minutes. What's the difference?

The silly part is we have a very small sales team. So you're looking at saving $700/year for 4 users...$2,800 a year.

Meanwhile, the main reason our costs are going up is that we're opening service centers. Each one has 1 if not 2 technicians, and they need an access license (they fill out service orders on iPads). We do 150 incidents a day, we used to have a girl here enter them all (and have the techs submit them on paper) but it makes more sense to do it this way.

17 techs now and we're going to have 7 more. 25 * 700 = $17,500 a year

So when the owners said "Why did our software costs jump from $80,000 to $97,000 last year? We were quoted originally at $70,000? Why does it keep going up? Who picked this software package? Blah blah."

Let's see. Business is growing. You opened a location in another state and put 10 people out there. You opened a service division and added a poo poo ton of service guys. More people are using the software and they price it by the user. On the other hand, if we closed a location or laid people off, the software cost would go DOWN.

Sorry. Subscription models are the norm today and that's how it goes. Besides, the old software couldn't do 1/10th of what this stuff could do. Do you want to go back to how we did it before where remote techs couldn't look at tickets, enter sales orders for service, etc? Because we can do that...
